Eurofins Scien�fic is a Luxembourg-based bioanaly�cal

tes�ng firm which was founded in 1987 and now operates a

chain of 310 laboratories in 39 coun�es and employing

27,000 people. Eurofins’ CEO, Dr. Gilles Mar�n says: “We are

The level of pollu�on in the capital city is usually seen to

remain at its worst condi�on during the winter season.

This is mainly because of the burning ac�vi�es being

undertaken in the neighboring districts and the swi� drop

in the temperature coupled with the tremendous

moisture content. These are the major factors trapping the

par�culate ma�er close to the surface. Looking at the

persistent poor air quality, government of Delhi has begun

the test trials of an�-smog gun in the most polluted area-

Anand Vihar, near the bus stand. With the intend of

controlling the alarming levels of prevailing air pollu�on,

Sh. Arvind Kejriwal- the honorable leader of AAP

Government ini�ated the tes�ng of “an�-smog gun” which

is a machine spraying water into the air to lower the level

of pollu�on in the air. As per ANI, the air quality remained

as hazardous at 414, near Anand Vihar Bus stand where

the an�-smog gun trial was conducted. The trial is

conducted by the Department of Environment and Delhi

Pollu�on Control Commi�ee. Sh. Imran Hussain, Delhi’s

Environment Minister shall be monitor the an�-smog gun

test trial. This an�-smog gun is well connected to a water

tank and is mounted on the top of a vehicle so that is can be

driven to another part of the city to sprinkle water in order

to se�le down the suspended par�cles mainly the dust.

Government of Delhi is also introducing an array of various

other measures to combat the poor condi�on of air

pollu�on.

Not only the health condi�on is being deteriorated by

the air pollu�on, there are several other issues that

people have to suffer. The dense fog and the resul�ng

low visibility in the city has caused around 34 numbers of

trains to be delayed and cancella�on of more than 15

trains have been registered in the last week of the year.

Countless trains are being delayed and not running on

�me. Routes were also affected cri�cally due to the

massive air polluted blanket spread over the capital city.

The prevailing air pollu�on in India is proved to be the fi�h greatest killer and is concluded to take away more than 10

lakh lives every year. As per a survey conducted by WHO in 1600 ci�es across the world, nothing is worse than the

quality of air of Delhi & NCR. Along with the capital city, Gwalior (MP) and Raipur (Chha�sgarh) have the worst air

quality. This poor air quality is damaging the lungs of more than 50 % of the young children inevitably. Earlier in

November 2016, during the event of the Great Smog of Delhi, the air pollu�on barbed far beyond the tolerable limits.

Having the acceptable limits as 60 and 100 for PM2.5 and PM10 respec�vely, they hit 999 micrograms per cubic

meter. This extreme case was not able to be handled or controlled.

The excellent an�oxidant proper�es of tea, enables it to

lower the risk of several mortal diseases which include

cancer, heart problems, Alzheimer’s disease and many

more. Regardless of these health benefits, drinking large

amount of tea may cause health issues, which is because of

the caffeine-related side effects.

Tea is considered to be the mostly consumed aroma�c

drink across the world. Whether it is green, black or white,

all tea originate from a plant known as Camellia sinensis

and so is its botanical name. India is one of the largest

producers of tea in the whole world and surprisingly,

approximately 70% of the tea is consumed in India itself.

Drinking tea is such a habit for many people that they need

it first thing in the morning. Undoubtedly, there are

countless number of health benefits related to drinking of

tea.

As far as the safety and quality aspects are concerned,

adultera�on is indeed very important issue. Does the tea

we are drinking has level of pes�cides which is surpassing

the standards defined by the Na�onal regula�ons? Do we

know the important quality parameters in tea?

As per a recent study conducted at an NABL accredited

tes�ng laboratory, fourteen renowned brands of black

tea were tested for safety and quality parameters. This

program was based on Food Safety & Standards

Regula�ons and related Indian Standard IS: 3633:2003,

and other relevant standards. The key parameters of

tes�ng included the pes�cide residues, heavy metals,

water-soluble ash, total ash, total flavonoids,

theaflavins, crude fibre, iron filings, water extract and

added colours. Fortunately, all the brands were found to

be safe.

Ü Pes�cide residues (Dicofol, Ethion, Fenazaquin,

Glufosinate ammonium, Glyphosate, Propargite and

Quinalphos) were not detected in any of the brands.

Ü Crude fibre was found to be in the specified limits as

16.5%. Total ash was detected to be within the

permissible limits of 4 to 8%.

Ü All brands were found to be out of danger of heavy

metals (Lead and copper).

Ü All the samples were free from Aflatoxins.
