LGF Student Feature

In Journalism class, a guest speaker came by the name of Cristela Guerra. Cristela came to the Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle school on February 25th to inform us about our community. Also to discuss journalism and her work as a journalist. Cristela was talking about what she does at her job (Boston Globe) and she asks others questions about our society. Cristela had stated “ In journalism, you have a voice ! you can make a change!” Cristela cares about our society, to stop the violence and to make our street safe for us. Also about her job, is really interesting because she has the ability to talk to people and get to listen to how they express their thoughts and feelings. I hope one day you get to meet her so you can be aware of our society and you can know some facts about The Boston Globe.

Please go to www.frederickflyer.org for more exciting articles featuring students from their Journalism class at the Frederick Pilot Middle School.

Hallways News DETERMINATION

Team Determination’s work on expectations for PRIDE Time is going strong. The students have been challenged with having everyone meet the six established expectations. During the months of April and May, 150 of our sixth grade students will be participating in visits with the Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center. As a result of emphasis being put on improving PRIDE time, students leave more engaged and positive after the daily community meetings.

EMPATHY

Team Empathy hallway teachers continue to honor students as "PRIDE Scholars of the Week" and as PRIDE raffle winners for demonstrating the PRIDE core values. We are continuing our classroom competitions around transitions and attendance. Some students in the 7th grade are participating in a 6-week Anti-violence program facilitated by Officer Grubbs

INTEGRITY

Team Integrity has been working diligently to strengthen our hal lway culture. Adults have been using unconventional methods and reward systems to support and drive students towards success. We are seeing improvement in student attendance and on-time arrival, uniform compliance, and behavior. Grade 8 teachers posted a set of encouraging hashtags for students to ponder upon each time they walk into the hallway. The Sub-Separate teachers posted an engaging bulletin board where students highlighted the assistive technology they use to help them learn. All in all, #TeamIntegrity is on the move toward keeping PRIDE and academic excellence front and center every day.

RESPECT

Team RESPECT continues to make tremendous strides towards improving the climate of the hallway by increasing the level of accountability for our students and strengthening our communication as a team. Students from both Respect and Integrity had the opportunity to visit the John Joseph Coakley Courthouse and participate in their “Discovering Justice” program. During their visit students participated in a Mock Trial, facilitated by a Representative from the courthouse, as well as a volunteer attorney. Students were respectful and engaged during this experience.

Academic News MATH TEAM

The Math Team has been looking at student materials and student work to reflect on the tasks we give our children and how we ask our questions. We have also been considering UDL (Universal Design for Learning) strategies, using them to address the barriers specific to our students' most common needs. We are looking forward to seeing the data from the third ANet assessment as well as taking a closer look at CER in our math classrooms. On April 5th, the Frederick Math Rocks! team will be representing our school in a district-wide math competition. The following students made the team: Michael Che, Damien Deshormes, Hien Nguyen, Tran Huynh, Duc Tran, and Thao Tran. Congratulations to these students! We know they will make us proud.

ELA TEAM

The Humanities Department has been looking at student work to determine how to best push our students' reading and writing to the next level. We continue to build strong text dependent questions that mandate students go back to the text and closely read to determine their responses. We have also been fortunate to host the Troubador Poets, including Boston Poet Laureate Danielle Legros Georges, anad teacher artists from the Actors' Shakespeare Project in our classrooms, integrating arts into our curricula.

ESL TEAM The ESL Team has been hard at working making complex, rigorous texts and tasks accessible for our students. The ESL Math teachers have been collaborating and creating tasks that synthesize different standards our students have been learning over the last couple months. In Humanities, Mr. Garcia's ESL 1 class presented a marketing/advertising campaign on Banana's to Mr. Vergara's class.

ELECTIVE TEAM

Quarter 3 Elective classes are now in full swing. Students in 2-D Art are learning to create Zentangles, Shading, Contouring, and Magazine Portraits. In 3-D Art, they are constructing 3-D Mandalas, Abstract Paper Wall Sculptures, Paper Snow Globes, and Maori Hand Tattoos. In Physical Education, students will be focusing on the elements of physical fitness and activity, teamwork and sportsmanship. Students in Journalism will be studying the elements of a news story, interviewing and questioning techniques, and using the writing process to write, edit, revise and publish their work. In Music, students will learn to read and notate music, sing, and analyze musical compositions through writing and using technology.
