We live today in a violent society. Seventy two years ago the first nuclear bomb exploded in Japan with intent to destroy. Crude as it was, the first nuclear bomb killed instantly 80000 people. After the end of the Second World War, many world leaders cried, “Never again”. Today nine nations possess

nuclear bombs including India. There are more than 15000 nuclear weapons around the globe today. One would assume that the lessons history teaches us would be followed by all, especially leaders. Indications do not support this assumption because nations presently have threatened to use nuclear bombs.

The lesson that history teaches us is that we do not learn from history. Nuclear bomb attack is a real threat today. It is naïve to believe that it will not happen. History cries that such an eventuality is more than possible.

CONUNDRUM WITH ACCEPTANCE SAMPLING

In an engineering industry, acceptance sampling is the most accepted method of Quality Assurance for receiving items/bought out items (particularly for general items and non-critical items). A readymade BIS standard is available as a reference. The simplest sampling plan is the single sampling plan which says, for a given lot size “N”, select a sample of size “n”. If the number of rejections in the sample is more than the acceptance number “C”, reject the

whole lot. The idea sounds very good on paper. Now assume a real situation in a production industry where you rejected a lot based on acceptance sampling and at the same time there is no stock in your store. This situation is disastrous as the whole production will come to a grinding halt for want of the material. To solve such problems, what is being practiced in industries is that go for cent percent inspection of such items, segregate accepted material and rejected

material. Run the production line with whatever accepted material. Simultaneously, at this juncture, the Purchase department needs to work overtime to see that the next lot reaches the company store before the full consumption of the present stock. This will help to avoid production stoppage. So where the acceptance sampling is a problem, cent percent inspection brings in a solution.

LOOKING BACK AND AHEAD

They were willing to die for freedom. And freedom, they got. The dream was sky-high. Turning a ravaged nation into a developed one, with economic prosperity, fine living conditions, radiant health, was a goal that was above fault-finding. Seven decades later we call for an audit, not from the view-point of high-flown speeches and writing, but from the vantage point of events that have occurred. What do we see when we look back? We become aghast—for we

see blood, death, destruction, diseases, hatred, avarice, arrogance and so forth. How have we fallen from the glorious heights of joy and hope that the blood, sweat and tears of countless unknown men and women have bought! We live today amid violence, terror, epidemics, population explosion, broken families, greed, ruin of nature, exploitation of natural resources, weapons of mass destruction, gruesome murders, grisly attack on the weak and defenceless,

suicide and so the catalogue extends. We have failed ourselves. Our leaders have failed us. What a crying shame! We who cried out for freedom have brought upon ourselves suffering and evil. The way of peace we have not known. Misery and destruction are in our ways. We cry for freedom again, for a leader whose arm is not shortened but strong enough to reach out to us, to fill our hungry and longing souls.

WHAT IS THE DEEP WEB?

The terms deep web and dark web are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Deep web simply refers to anything on the web that can’t be found using a search engine. This means anything behind a pay wall, anything that is password protected, or anything that is dynamically generated on the fly and doesn’t have a permanent URL.All of these things are said to comprise the deep web because they don’t exist at the surface of the web.You actually access the deep web

routinely, every day. The emails in your Gmail account, your online bank statements, your office intranet, direct messages in Twitter, photos you’ve uploaded to Facebook and marked as private. These are all part of the deep web.It isn’t known how large the deep web is, but estimates from researchers suggest it’s likely to constitute the overwhelming majority of all online content. The deep web might also be referred to

as the invisible web or the hidden web, adding another layer of mystery to something that is actually quite mundane. The opposite of the deep web is the surface web, which is all the content you will can find through a Google search, for example. But there’s more. The deep web is also where masses of raw data is stored, whether government resources, data for use by scientists, or in the form of databases that you can use for your own research..

IZITA 1.0

IZITA started with great fervour on the second day. On 12th August, 3 parallel workshops namely : IoT using Raspberry Pi, Wireless electricity and Big Data Analytics were conducted. Day 2 winded up with a Halloween themed cultural night. The delegates along with

the volunteers went for trekking to Thattekad on 13th August, 2017. The event finally ended on 14th August 2017 with 2 invigorating parallel sessions: Film Technology by Shri Ganesh Raj, Director, ‘Aanandam’ fame and Entrepreneurship development by Mrs.

Ruby Peethambaran, Director, Fourth Ambit and Mrs Anuradha CEO Career 360. The event was successfully organized by the IEEE members of SB ASIET under the able guidance of the Branch Counselor, Mrs. Gomathy S.

FIDGET LESSONS ON EDUCATING INDIANS

The fidget is a simple toy comprising a central weighted disk and paddle blades whose effortless spinning has been helpful for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. But the fidget toy has come to have much broader appeal. It has, in a short span of time, come to account for sizeable share of global toy market. The fidget is a simple and imaginative product.Unleashing the power of imagination is

the key to improving the education system. The Indian education system needs to move away from the system of rote learning sans regard for analytic and critical thinking. It also needs a cultural shift, moving away from world view that sees questioning as subversion of order to one that encourages questioning of norms. Imagination and innovation might not be easily taught but can be inculcated by emphasis on

questioning, creativity and analytic thinking. This will require changes in pedagogy and the manner in which teachers function in a classroom. The Indian mind has shown its dexterity in the way it adopts the practice of Jugaad borne from the need to make do with fewer resources is a good example of this dexterity. India has to transform into a nation of innovation.
