As all the faithful continue to experience the joys of the Easter se ason, may all of us draw parti cul ar strength a nd inspiration from the momentous occasion that bega n the month: the beatification of Pope John Paul II. This towe ring figure of faith and e xample of utter commi tment to God’s work wa s a loyal student a nd fri end of the Fri ars. Often he drew attention to our Founder St. Dominic and the Order’s tradition and mission through the ages—not least our fir m belief i n the p ow er of reason, the human intellect, to demonstrate the existence of God i n an age of  indiff erence , disbelief and nihilism. It is one crucial aspect of our contribution to the New Evangeli zation call ed for by the late P ontiff .  During these w eeks leading up to Pentecost, the first reading at Mass focused our attention on the Acts of the Apostles. What have w e heard? The very beginnings of the C hurch are rooted in Christ’s promise that the  “promise of the Fathe r”, the Ho ly Spi rit , wou ld be given to the apos tles. By faithfully preaching Jesu s Christ, this band of apostolic missionaries is the channel of grace for many J ew s and Genti les. Their hearts were on fire with the love of Christ. The peace o f Chri st flowing from His Resurrection comforted them as the y fearl essly and at g reat personal ri sk preached and taught all that Christ had commanded them.  In countless wa ys, we continue to li ve tha t fir st s pringtime in the li fe of the Church. We too are call ed to evange li ze today’s peoples Dear Colleague, As yo u ma y recall my men tioning before, my home parish is St. Gertrude’s in Cincinnati, where the Province’s novitiate is located. My wife and family are blessed to be in day-to-da y contact  with this large group of holy men. And the parish is known to be a real beacon in the city ,  with the many apostolic undertakings supported by the Friars and the parishioners. On any given day, in addition to Mass and the outst andin g preaching of the Friars,  we can be engaged in some faith-formation activity at our parish.  This indeed is a great  blessin g for our lives  which we know is not the same experience for many, but is in fact rather the exception.  The expansion and leveraging of the preaching mission of the Friars through  various media, is therefore not simpl y an additional project that they are undertaking as some sort of novel add itional activity. I t is rather an imperative and essential component in the strategy and mission of the New Evangelization.  Let us do all we can to support them in leveraging exponen tially the reach and effectiveness of their preaching mission – which we share with them through our Baptism - through the  website and outreach through various media. In this way, together  with the Friars, we will answer our comm on call to "Go into all the  world and preach the good news to every creature.” Ma rk 1 6:15.  Thank you for your

As you may recall my mentioning before my home parish is StGertrudersquos inCincinnati where theProvincersquos novitiate islocated My wife andfamily are blessed to bein day-to-day contact

with this large group of holy men And theparish is known to be areal beacon in the city

Christ to people who have become indifferent dismissive

and hos tile to faith In this act of faithful witness we also

will come to a deeper understanding and a ppreciation of

the great gift of faith we ha ve received

Literally and figuratively through a grow ing range of

ministries guided by the New Evangelization the Friars of

the P rovince of St Joseph a re fanning out throughout the

land their hearts burning with love of Christ and bringing

the message of Godrsquos never failing love to all people Andwe are not alone through your support and prayers you

stand w ith us every day shoulder to shoulder

mdashcollaborating w ith us and empowe ring us to carry out

Godrsquos vital invitation first made to St Dominic to prea ch

Jesus Christ pe rfectly to all For this all the Friars are

profoundly grateful to you

On a pas toral visit to Venice Italy Pope Bened ict XVI

ea rlier this month called atten tion to a pa rticularly

essential aspect of our common mission the re-

evangelization of a Christian community whose faith

mdashuntested by the ldquopersecutions and the most d ifficult

trialsrdquo of ages pastmdashldquoruns the risk of being emptied of its

truth and its dee pest elements It runs the risk of

becoming a

perspective tha t

only touches life

superficially in the

aspe cts that are

just social and

culturalrdquo

This superficial

faith is wha t

happens says the

Holy Father when

people still

consider

themselves to be

Christians and go

through the

motions of faith

even attending

Mass ldquobut ceas e

to be lieve in the

power and the living presence of the Lordrdquo This is

precisely the preaching task of the Friars to restore a

sense of a tangible relationship w ith Christ an

ldquoexpe rience of faith in Jesus crucified and risenrdquo tha t can

ldquoenlighten the path of e xistencerdquo through faith and reas on

which leads to an e arnest reconciliation to Christ and

neighbor

The New Evangelization is not fundamentally a matter of

programs or long discourses about Christ It is a renew al

in the faithfulrsquos relationship with Jesus Christ that makes a

difference in the ir lives and in the lives o f others who

witness the ir faith The invitation of the Acts of the

Apostles continues today ldquoto put on the Lord Jesus C hrist

(Rom 1314)rdquo

Thanks to your indispensable generosity and friendship

the Friars through the ir fidelity to preaching the Word of

God and to the solemn celebration of the Eucharist are

fulfilling a ministry that as the Ho ly Fathe r puts it

ldquorestores to us the e yes of faith so a s to se e e verything

and e veryone w ith the eyes of God and the light of His

loverdquo and truly puts Ch rist in the ldquocente r of [our] livesrdquo

Rediscovering Christ through the Dominicans

The Friars contribute to the New Evange lization in myriad

ways not least in the realm of media and communications

e p an support without which none of this important work

would be possible Please keep in prayerthe Friars who wereordained this morningas they begin their livesas Dominican priests of the Province of StJoseph

Our Holy Founder

The Friars venerate St Dominic and ce lebrate h is legacy

whom we are a ll invited to discover in intimate friendship

In this regard I call your attention to an e xcerpt from

ldquoDominican Spirituality Principles and Practice rdquo by Father

William Aquinas Hinnebusch OP which cites accounts by

Blessed Cecilia a Dominican Sister who received her habit

from St Dominic himself

Her descriptions of the

person of St Dominic their

accuracy borne out

centuries later by s cientific

research can serve to help

the faithful approach the

saint in prayer She wrote

powerful and sonorous

Building a New Priory

A most tangible dimension of the Friarsrsquo growing presence

in the Province and in the miss ion lands o f Easte rn Africa

are the de velopment of our Priories and apostolates Our

houses also called Priories are the b rick-and-mortar

setting that give us the proper space to fully live out the

Dominican Way of

Life o f community

worship and study

in service of the

apostolate and

growth in

holiness

It is with profound

joymdashand deepest

gratitude to all of

you who are

making this

possiblemdashthat I can report on the groundbreaking for our

new Priory of St Thomas Aquinas in Cha rlottesville VA at

the University Parish of St Thomas Aquinas One of the

largest and most vibrant communities in the Province it

se rves the University of Virginia and the local community

at large We have had a Dominican prese nce there formore than 50 years but never a Priory which will soo n

allow for the much-needed growth of the community of

Friars there

Recently one o f our most distinguishe d Friars Archbishop

Augustine J DiNoia OP Secretary of the Cong regation for

Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments was

on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony as w ell as to

participate in an interfaith vigil of blessing tha t marked

another firstmdashthe installation of President Teresa Sullivan

as the first Catho lic Pres ident of the University Click here

Faith seeking understanding is one of the hallmarks of the

Order a commitment to s tudy that a nchors the Friarsrsquo

expression through the Thomistic Circles Sponsored by

the Thomistic Institute at the Pon tifical Faculty of the

Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of

Studies the Thomistic Circles are academic seminars

mdashfeaturing top scholars from around the worldmdashthat

tackle contemporary issues in philosophy and theology in

the light of the vision of St Thomas Aquinas known a s

Thomism The sessions a re open to the public and are a

great opportunity for the laity to deepen their intellectual

The New Translation of the Mass

This liturgical year will bring enormous change On the

allow for the much-needed growth of the community of

William Aquinas Hinnebusch OP which cites accounts by

Blessed Cecilia a Dominican Sister who received her habit

from St Dominic himself

Her descriptions of the

person of St Dominic their

in the Province and in the miss ion lands o f Easte rn Africa

are the de velopment of our Priories and apostolates Our

houses also called Priories are the b rick-and-mortar

setting that give us the proper space to fully live out the

Dominican Way of

Life o f community

worship and study

in service of the

apostolate and

growth in

holiness

It is with profound

joymdashand deepest

gratitude to all of

you who are

making this

possiblemdashthat I can report on the groundbreaking for our

new Priory of St Thomas Aquinas in Cha rlottesville VA at

the University Parish of St Thomas Aquinas One of the

largest and most vibrant communities in the Province it

se rves the University of Virginia and the local community

at large We have had a Dominican prese nce there formore than 50 years but never a Priory which will soo n

allow for the much-needed growth of the community of

Friars there

Recently one o f our most distinguishe d Friars Archbishop

Augustine J DiNoia OP Secretary of the Cong regation for

Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments was

on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony as w ell as to

participate in an interfaith vigil of blessing tha t marked

another firstmdashthe installation of President Teresa Sullivan

as the first Catho lic Pres ident of the University Click here

Threefold Body of Christ

The New Translation of the Mass

This liturgical year will bring enormous change On the

First Sunday of Advent (Nov 27 2011) the new translation

of the Mass crafted to bring about a more reverent and

contemplative mode of

wo rship will go into

effect To help p repare the

faithful the Province of St

Joseph has prepared a

series of parish bulletin

inserts for use in the

Church at large that

highlight various aspects

of the new translations

Booklets o ne through nine

are now available for study and reflection please click as
