Honoring past traditions, yet making modern tweaks is an important part of interim ministry and part of my plan during my time here. Thank you, Deaconess Ann, for telling us more about yourself, and welcome to Bethlehem. Deanna Hebbert.

Monthly Ministry Highlight

Deaconess Ann Maki, Interim Children’s Ministry Coordinator

As Council President Greg Schumann communicated to congregants in early August, Ann Maki has been hired as our Interim Children’s Ministry Coordinator. Deaconess Ann’s role is a ten hour per week position focusing on preschool through fifth grade Sunday School. Ann may also be providing support to the K-5th grade age children, as the need arises, for other Faith Formation needs not specifically related to Sunday School.

Ann’s role as Interim Children’s Ministry Coordinator is a temporary position designed to “hold” this staff position until we have a settled pastor and to allow some programming to be off-loaded from Deaconess Kristen, who has taken on some of the pastoral roles in this time of transition. Deaconess Ann will anchor, support and closely work with the volunteers in the Sunday School program. She will be able to add her special touches to enhance our ministry and help us dream about the ministry to which God is calling us.

As a new staff member, Deaconess Ann Maki is happy to be on board here at Bethlehem and pleased to introduce herself to Star readers. After my internship in Boulder, I married my husband, Nate, and also became a consecrated deaconess in the Lutheran Diaconal Association (same community as Deaconess Kristen and Deaconess Sarah). On “Family Leave from Call,” I am also a rostered deacon in the ELCA.

My husband and I are blessed to have two kids: our daughter is now in second grade, and our son, four, attends Cornerstone preschool. Nate works for Southwest Airlines at Denver International Airport.

Transition Update

The Call Committee has been working diligently over the summer interviewing and assessing the candidates sent to us by the Rocky Mountain Synod. Please know that we take this responsibility very seriously and are making every effort to evaluate them based on the needs expressed in our Ministry Site Profile so that the candidate chosen will be the best possible fit. We will be so excited to share the results of the search with you as soon as we possibly can. Thanks for your patience and support of our process.

Worship

September 1 – Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost

• Luke 14:1, 7–14: Jesus observes guests jockeying for position at the table. He uses the opportunity to teach his hearers to choose humility rather than self-exaltation. Jesus also makes an appeal for hosts to mimic God’s gracious hospitality to the poor and the broken.

• Bethlehem Women’s choir will sing at both services.

• Liturgy setting 4

3

September 8 – Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

• Luke 14:25–33: Jesus speaks frankly about the fearsome cost of discipleship. Those who follow him should know from the outset that completing the course of discipleship will finally mean renouncing all other allegiances.

• Bluegrass service

• “God’s Work. Our Hands.” Sunday

September 15 – Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

• Luke 15:1–10: Jesus tells two stories that suggest a curious connection between the lost being found and sinners repenting. God takes the initiative to find sinners, each of whom is so precious to God that his or her recovery brings joy in heaven.

• Adult choir at 8:00 a.m. and Revelation choir at 10:15 a.m.

• Liturgy setting 10

• Rally Day Sunday

September 22 – Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

• Luke 16:1–13: Jesus tells the curious story of a dishonest man who cheats his employer and then is commended by him for having acted so shrewdly. Jesus wonders why his own followers are less creative and diligent in their stewardship given that they are managers of a far more valuable household.

• Adult choir at 10:15 a.m.

• Liturgy setting 10

September 29 – Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

• Luke 16:19–31: Jesus tells a parable in which the poor one is “lifted up” and the rich one is “sent away empty.” Jesus makes it clear that this ethic of merciful reversal is not new but is as old as Moses and the prophets.

• Healing prayer at both services during communion

• Liturgy setting 10

• New members received at both services

Sound Board Operators Needed

Wanted: Persons to operate the audio console during services. The requirements are minimal: (1) good hearing and (2) the ability to adjust volume controls. Training is available by contacting Jerry Phipps (303-516-9282, [email protected]).

Adult Forums for September

Planning for the fall Adult Forum sessions is still ongoing. Please continue to check the website (https://www.bethlehem-lutheran.net/faith-formation/adult.html) and weekly bulletins for an updated schedule.

Rally Day September 15

Let’s Rally! George Will once said, “It is an old baseball joke that big-inning baseball is affirmed in the Bible, in Genesis: ‘In the big inning God created…’” With that spirit, the congregation is invited to this year’s Rally Day celebration, Sunday, September 15, at 9:15 a.m. in the fellowship hall. To celebrate the start of the programmatic year at Bethlehem, we’ll rally around a baseball theme time together. Hot dogs, popcorn and drinks will be provided, and peanuts will be available for $5/bag as part of a fundraiser for our Sunday School. We are planning an interactive way to get familiar with the teachers, curriculum and more. This fall kids will be studying stories from Genesis and Exodus to know God through these stories of faith. This isn’t just for the kids—adults get to be a part of the rally too! Everyone is invited to wear their favorite team’s jersey (does not have to be baseball team) and no RSVP needed. If you have questions, please contact Deaconess Ann Maki ([email protected], text/call 720-301-0104). Take me out to Sunday School…

Sunday School Starts with September 15 Rally Day

Sunday School starts September 15 with a Rally Day celebration between services and regular Sunday School classes start Sunday, September 22, 9:15–10:05 a.m. (For more information on Rally Day, please refer to the Rally Day article.)

This fall we will continue learning about Moses—starting with when God called him through the Burning Bush. Please register your child online (https://www.bethlehem-lutheran.net/faith-formation/prekindergarten-grade-5/sunday-school-registration.html) or with paper registration forms (available outside Deaconess Ann’s office). For questions, contact Deaconess Ann ([email protected], 720-301-0104 call or text).

Confirmation Ministry Orientation Night

September 18, 7:00–8:00 p.m.: Confirmation Ministry Orientation night! Calling all 6th–8th graders and their parents! Please join us for a fun and informative night that will kick off our Confirmation Ministry. Come hear about the themes of lessons for this year and do a fun faith-forming activity while you are there! All the information about the schedule for the year will also be available, as well as all necessary waivers and anticipated fee costs (no money is due that night—just a heads up on what fees are expected when). Contact Deaconess Kristen ([email protected]) with any questions.

On September 6 and 7, Kara Haug, creator of Grace Unbound (www.graceunbound.com), a theologically based comprehensive sexual education program, will be at Lutheran Church of Hope (1305 W 10th Ave, Broomfield, CO) to talk sex with parents and kids. Friday evening, September 6, from 6:00–8:00 p.m., there will be a wine and cheese event for parents of all aged youth. Saturday morning, September 7, high-school age youth will be with Kara from 10:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. with a pizza lunch. There is a suggested donation of $10 per person for each of these events. If you/your student is interested in joining this conversation, please contact Deaconess Kristen ([email protected]). We would love to have Josephine the Church Bus full of folks headed there on each day!

Naomi Circle Resumes on September 10

Naomi Circle will meet on Tuesday, September 10 at 9:15 a.m. We will have coffee, tea and treats in the fellowship hall and then a short business meeting. Our Bible Study is based on the Bible study in the Gather magazine and is led by Pastor Keith. It will be from 10:00–11:00 a.m. All ladies are invited to come and bring a friend for wonderful Christian fellowship. See you there! Contact Sue Smith ([email protected], 863-326-4000) for more information.

2019 Women’s Retreat: October 4–6!

Our 2019 Women’s Retreat will be held the weekend of October 4–6 with a theme of “Altogether Beautiful, All Together”. Come join us as we dive into who God intended/created us to be—altogether beautiful! Begin to lose what is weighing you down by spending time growing physically, emotionally and spiritually as you draw closer to God, His Love, and being your own kind of beautiful. Let’s do this all together! This year’s retreat will be at Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp in the beautiful brand-new staff housing lodge—fittingly named “Ruth.”

Our retreat will be led by Wendy Belinda. Wendy is the co-founder of Through, Inc. and serves as their Director of Health and Wellness Programs. Through, Inc. is a faith-based nonprofit organization that empowers people as they move through physical, emotional, social, and spiritual obstacles. As an R.N., Wendy started Through’s Free Health Clinic and established a holistic wellness program that focuses on living a full life through exercise, nutrition, spirituality, and community. As a certified instructor in Revelation Wellness Group Fitness, Holy Yoga, P90X, and PiYo, Wendy teaches seven to ten free classes each week. Recently Wendy has felt called to make an even greater impact and to help women grow deeper in their faith through health and wellness by leading women’s retreats. She feels she can encourage and inspire others to be wholly healthy as they draw closer to God and His Love and discover their worth and find hope for the future.

Fun facts: Elevation at Sky Ranch is 9200 feet; all meals are provided; and transportation will be provided for those who do not wish to drive. Cost: $160 with full payment due by September 21. Please direct any questions you have to Deaconess Kristen Baltrum ([email protected]). Sign up online (https://www.bethlehem-lutheran.net/gather/womens-retreat-registration.html) or use a form available in the narthex.

New Member Class Scheduled for September

If you are a visitor, guest or have been attending for years, and want to know more about becoming a member of the Bethlehem congregation, we have a great opportunity for you coming up this month. A new member orientation class is scheduled for Sunday, September 22 at 11:30 a.m. We will begin with a luncheon to get familiar with our staff followed by a brief tour of the facilities and then convene in the Fireside room. Pastor Keith and additional staff will discuss the Lutheran theology and answer any questions you may have. We will also discuss the various ministries in place and the work going on here at Bethlehem to spread God’s good news. You will be amazed at how many areas Bethlehem outreach is active! We are a very active and open church where all are welcome and fellowship abounds. Please let us know if you are interested in attending (for a lunch and materials count) and if you have questions, by contacting Pastor Keith ([email protected]) or Bob Lee ([email protected], 303-956-6931).

First Friday Fellowship in September

Join us on Friday, September 6, 6:00–8:30 p.m. for First Friday Fellowship hosted by Jenny and Mike Kelley (1711 Roma Ct., Longmont). First Friday is a monthly adult fellowship opportunity to get to know other church members in a relaxed setting. No reservations are required; just bring an appetizer and a beverage to share.

BLC Congregational Emails

Some members have reported that they have not received recent weekly congregational emails. We have had some technical issues and have implemented an email application that should alleviate most of our issues. The current weekly email account is Bethlehem Communications (the name that will appear as the sender) and will come through MailChimp.

However, if you have gotten the emails in the past and are no longer getting them now, most of the problems we are seeing now are due to the spam filters set by individuals and/or their email provider. Please check your spam or junk folders, and if you find a BLC email there, mark it as Not Spam and move to your Inbox; that should tell your spam filters to let the email come through. If you have more questions or would like to be added to the list, please contact Jenny Kelley ([email protected]) or Matt James ([email protected]).

Thank You:

Dear Bethlehem family,

Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers for me, my mom, and our family at the news of the passing of my sister last month. It has been very difficult but our spirits have been lifted by your kindness and your prayers. And your hugs are pretty awesome too! It is so comforting to know that we do not walk this journey of life alone, none of us do, and that we have this incredibly caring Church to lean on. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

~Kristen Baltrum, Karen Aumann, and our families.
