MINISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT MONTHLY MINISTERIAL SEMINAR ON

CLEAN ENERGY TECHNOLOGY EFFICIENCY AND MONITORING

What is Clean Energy TechnologyClean Energy Technology can be define

as creating Energy with smaller environmental footprint and minimizing pollution.

Clean technology includes recycling, renewable energy (WindPower, SolarPower, Biomass,

Hydropower, Biofuels), GreenTransportation, Electric motors, lighting and many other

appliances that are now more energy efficient.

Clean Energy TechnologiesRecycling: is a process to change waste into new

products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduces energy usage, reduce air pollution and water pollution (from land filling)by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emission.

Renewable Energy: Is defined as energy that comes from resources which are continually replenished on a human timescale such as Sunlight, Wind, Rain, Tides, Waves

-Cont’d-Green Transportation: This can be refer to

when transportation is sustainable which are largely being measured by effectiveness and efficiency of any transportation system as well as the environmental impact of the system.

Lighting: This is the use of both natural and artificial light sources like lamps and light fixtures for illumination by capturing daylight (using windows, skylights, or light shelves) which are sometimes used as the main source of light during daytime in buildings

Climate Change /Global WarmingClimate change is a significant and lasting change in the

statistical distribution of weather patterns over time. It may be a change in average weather conditions, or in the distribution of weather around the average conditions (i.e., more or fewer extreme weather events). Climate change is caused by factors such as biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by Earth

Global Warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans caused by increasing concentration of greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as burning of fossil fuel.

Energy Efficiency and Monitoring Energy Efficiency is "using less energy to provide the same service“

For example : Replacing an incandescent lamp with a compact fluorescent lamp (which uses much less energy to produce the same amount of light) is energy efficiency.

Energy Monitoring Hardware and software that

connects to your energy resources to provide a defined baseline of energy consumption

Knowing is the start – you need to see what your energy usage is as a starting point

However, Being green is not just a marketing strategy, it’s a necessity to be efficient and reduce operating expenses

Energy Monitoring TechnologiesThree monitoring technologies

-Guessed/Estimated-Current Measurement Only-Power Measurement

Guessed/Estimated- Good -Not as accurateThe numbers produced by these guesses can be off by 20% Really only works for lighting, not all loads

Page 16: Monthly Ministerial presentation

Current Measurement Only- Better

-Mid-level accuracyThe works when we assume that the voltage is stable and

measure the actual current P=I*V

Can provide fairly accurate results for stable voltages

Has a problem with active loads, like ballasts Power factor correction helps in the “on” state “Off” state will read much higher than actual power due

to phase shiftsCan expect a 10% error in measurements

Can be used for non-lighting loads

Page 17: Monthly Ministerial presentation

Power Measurement- Best

Samples real voltage and real current at high frequencies

Compensates for phase offsetsDoesn’t get fooled by voltage drops or non-

linear current scalingExpensive

Measured by a dedicated device: GLS-EM-MCU Most accurate option for measurement

Errors can be smaller than 1%Useful for measuring ANY electrical load

What are the steps involvedMetering your energy consumption and collecting

the data by using an energy monitoring softwareUncover places to save energy - such as making

upgrades or replacing inefficient equipmentPutting into place energy saving functions – such

as demand response settings or eliminating wasted energy in unoccupied spaces

Tracking progress by analyzing the real-time data and comparing with historical information to what these efforts are actually achieving
