UNICEF Publishes First of its kind report on Health crisis:
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Pure Earth, international non-profit organization authored and published the first of kind report on the health crisis titled “The Toxic Truth: Children’s Exposure to Lead Pollution Undermines a Generation of Future Potential” states that around lead poisoning affects large number of children all across the globe.
The Toxic Truth: The Toxic Truth, is an analysis of
childhood exposure to lead conducted by the Institute of Health Metrics Evaluation.
It was verified with the study approved for publication in Environmental Health Perspectives.
According to a new study, one in three children worldwide are threatened by unacceptably high lead levels in the blood. One of the major contributors to lead poisoning is an increase in the recycling of lead in automotive batteries to satisfy the increasing usage of cars and trucks, especially in the developing world.
The study notes that lead recycling is often done haphazardly in poor and middle-income countries where industrial pollution safeguards are poorly enforced or nonexistent.
Lead can be found almost everywhere, in dust and fumes from fires and smelters,

Nitrogen Dioxide levels fell by more than 70 percent in New Delhi during lockdown: UN
The nitrogen dioxide levels fell by more than 70 per cent in New Delhi during the lockdown, as per a UN policy brief.
The UN Secretary-General’s Policy Brief on ‘COVID-19 in an Urban World’ though highlighted that the environmental gains made could be temporary if the cities re-open without policies to prevent air pollution and promote de-carbonisation.
An estimated 90 percent of all reported COVID-19 cases, urban areas have become the epicentre of the pandemic. The size of the population of the areas and their high level of global and local interconnectivity make them particularly vulnerable to the spread of the virus.
New scientific studies suggest that poor air quality is correlated with higher COVID-19 mortality rates.
Regarding COVID-19 outbreaks in informal settlements, the brief stated that in Mumbai, as of mid-April 2020, 30 percent of designated containment zones were in slums, while 60 percent were within 100 metres of an informal settlement.
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that the state of public services in many cities requires urgent attention, especially in informal settlements. The brief also recommends that nations must pursue a green, resilient and inclusive economic recovery.

Turmeric may help in treating blood cancer
Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) researchers have shown that curcumin the active principle from turmeric may enhance cancer cell death, said a statement from the institution.
The study showed that curcumin significantly increased the sensitivity of leukemia cells to a protein that causes death of cancer cells. The research however showed these results in-situ (in a test tube) and the outcome may vary in the human body. This doubt arises because curcumin is known to be poorly absorbed into the blood from the gut and its bioavailability for therapeutic purposes is generally poor.
