PRESIDENTS REPORT

Hi Members,

Another pretty quiet month for motorsport in our club but next month we have our skid pan event at

Eastern Creek on the 10th August. Steve has made some changes to the calendar for this month. The

CACA Cataract Khanacross on the 24th August is now on our club point score, our Ansell Park

motorkhana has also moved from the 24th of August to the 7th of September.

Steve and myself also went to a CAMS “Running your club” seminar which was useful at looking at a

number of aspect of running our club and after I went to the MotorEx car show at Olympic Park an

saw some great looking modified cars.

Our next club meeting on the first Tuesday in August at the Glenbrook Baptist Church hall from

7:30pm.

All the best

Devotions – August 2013

Introduction

We continue working through Dietrich Bonhoeffer's exposition on the Sermon on the Mount in his book

'The Cost of Discipleship'. Last month we read of Jesus agreement with and affirmation of the law. This

month we continue with the implications of this as it applies to sexual relationships, and especially marriage.

The Reading

Matt 5:27“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman

with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29

If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw

it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30

And if your right hand

causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into

hell.

31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’

32 But I say to you that everyone who

divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman

commits adultery. (ESV)

The teaching

As we saw last month, when Jesus says “But I say to you...” we see Jesus not to be just an interpreter and

guardian of the law as the scribes and Pharisees were, but to be the Author and Giver of the Law. It is

only those who see Christ as the Giver and Fulfiller of the law that can attain to a true knowledge of the

law, that can truly fulfil it. This month's passage looks at this in the context of marriage.

Second only to the upholding the sanctity of life itself, Jesus upholds and reinforces God's law as it relates

to sexual relationships. As disciples of Jesus Christ, our desires are never to be given free rein, except

when accompanied by true godly love. To follow Jesus means to fully accept God's position that marriage

is a faithful lifelong monogamous relationship between a man and a woman, and it is only in that context

that we are permitted to enjoy any sexual relationship. In God's eyes marriage is the single most important

relationship between people, second only to the individuals' direct relationship with God himself or herself

through Jesus Christ. Despite the attitude of our modern society that permits easy divorce, in God's eyes

divorce is still a great sin, and is only permissible in the case of the destruction of the fidelity of the

relationship by one of the parties through adultery or other sexual immorality. In any case, in Jesus' eyes,

divorce taints any future relationships for both the innocent party and the guilty party.

Lust, like any sin, is a symptom of unbelief in Jesus. However, the bible places special emphasis on sins

involving sexual immorality. Marriage is a model of the relationship between Christ and the church,

involving intimacy, commitment, submission, sacrifice and single minded devotion between the parties.

As we read in Genesis chapter 2, the two become one flesh, and so sexual immorality is an attack on both

the body of the offended party, and that of the offender like no other sinfulness.

In this context, then, Jesus goes on to say that no sacrifice is too great if it enables us to conquer a lust

which cuts us off from both our spouse and Jesus. Both eye and hand are less than Christ, and when they

are used as the instruments of lust and hinder the body from the purity of discipleship, they must be

sacrificed for the sake of him. The gains of lust are trivial compared with the loss it brings – you forfeit

your body eternally for the momentary pleasure of eye or hand. When you have made your eye the

instrument of impurity you cannot see God with it.

As disciples, then, our adherence to Christ has to extend to our marriages, so that the Christian marriage is

marked by discipline and self denial. Whilst Jesus does not command his disciples either to marry or to

remain celibate, he does confirm the sanctity of marriage by affirming its indissolubility and by

prohibiting the innocent party from remarrying when the guilty party has broken the marriage by adultery.

The way to save ourselves from falling into the temptations of lust, leading eventually to fully blown

sexual immorality is to keep our eyes firmly on Jesus. In this way we will be able to look on all people

through the eyes of godly love, and not through sinful lust.

Prayer

Father, we thank you for your saving grace through Jesus Christ. May we lay down our lives in all our

relationships, but especially our marriages, for our sakes, and for your glory.
