Monthly Hotel Establishment ReportJune and YTD June, 2017
Dear Hotel Partner,
It gives me great pleasure to share with you highlights of June’s Hotel Establishments’ Performance
Report as part of our commitment to provide a continuous shared commentary
June saw a remarkable 30% increase in hotel guest arrivals versus the corresponding month in 2016,
boosted by an exceptional Eid Al Fitr period. This lifted the cumulative first half-year guest arrivals to
over 2.25 million, a growth of 7% on the year.
Each of our six tier one markets recorded impressive performance, with guests from Saudi Arabia
more than doubling in June. China’s surge as the largest overseas source market has continued,
posting a 78.5% month-on-month increase, with year to date (YTD) guest arrivals up 55% to 185,000.
This reflects our sustained promotional activity complemented by expansion of air access.
India and the United Kingdom maintain second and third spots, albeit with a more conservative YTD
growth of eight and two per cent respectively. We saw the USA regaining ground after a period of
stability, posting double-digit growth for the month, and pushing YTD growth to 5%. Meanwhile,
domestic tourism – UAE nationals and residents from all of the seven emirates – grew by 28%, with
the 100,000 or so guests representing 32% of all hotel occupants for the month.
I’m pleased to say that we are on track to achieve our forecast guest arrivals growth for the year,
and we are well placed to maximise these opportunities as we head into the second half of 2017.
As I mentioned, Eid Al Fitr has been a springboard for these figures. Abu Dhabi welcomed record-
breaking number of visitors, with many of our leading hotels achieving near full occupancy as
tourists from across the world chose Abu Dhabi as the place to spend their holiday. Abu Dhabi
Summer Season is also now well underway and we expect the remaining series of theatre, music and
entertainment shows to have a pull effect on demand well into August.
Meanwhile, be advised that we have just launched an innovative season-long global ‘Extraordinary
City Story’ marketing campaign with Manchester City Football Club. Utilising a dedicated campaign
website, the promotion will feature online, in print, and through match day billboard and
programme promotional activities. As the Club’s official destination partner, our campaign will also
reach millions of fans through the Club’s own marketing channels, raising awareness of the emirate’s
extraordinary experiences.
Finally, Abu Dhabi has been named the second-best city in the world to live, work and do business in,
overtaking both London and Paris from an overall list of sixty cities in the latest Ipsos City Index. This
is testament to the emirate’s growing appeal, and I thank you for your contribution in achieving this.
Yours sincerely,
Saif Saeed Ghobash
Director General, Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority
