Cumberland Lodge 2012 In February, European Institute MSc students were invited to attend the annual Cumberland Lodge workshop. Spaces for the workshop were, as always, limited and in high demand. 80 students participated in the two-day workshop. This year, the workshop‟s theme centred on the current crisis in the EU. The workshop‟s main purpose (beyond having a great time and building lasting friendships) was to introduce, interrogate and reflect on the various alternative narratives of the European crisis story - a mission that was met with great success. On Monday, Miguel Otero Iglesias of the ESSCA School of Management and Michael Goldfarb from the www.globalpost.com got us off to a flying start discussing the crisis of monetary integration. Both expressed a degree of measured optimism, which currently eludes the majority of (particularly English-speaking) financial media publications. Later that afternoon, our very own Bob Hancké offered a significantly less sanguine read on the flaws of EU institutional design and particularly on the (mis-)direction of current institutional reform efforts. In the evening, we watched the highly critical documentary “The Road to Europe” before finally calling it a day and retiring to the bar. On Tuesday morning, Sobrina Edwards of King‟s College and Simona Guerra of Loughborough University delivered an equally sobering (punt intended:- ) indictment on the question of European identity and the legitimacy crisis of the dominant ideology underlying European integration before we all enjoyed a spell of sunshine roaming in the surrounding Windsor Park. Finally, in a scathing final talk, Professor Zielonka of Oxford University invited us to reflect upon the various potential future scenarios for Europe and pushed us to articulate clearly how/what measures are required to avoid the worst of all possible worlds. Students were then given the opportunity to have their final say on the workshop in a presentations session, which will forever live in infamy as much for Viktorio‟s panache as for his Grenache… Dr Or Raviv European Institute European Institute Latest Monthly European Institute Newsletter March 2012 Monthly European Institute Newsletter European Institute links: European Institute Homepage Academic Staff Contacts Administrative Staff Contacts Inside this issue: EI Latest 1 Arrivals and Departures 2 Publications 3 Events 3 Sixty-second Interview 6 Staff News 7 EI in the News 9 EI Alumni News 11

hellipwith Jeanette Healy current European Institute MSc European Political Economy student

Jeanette you have recently attended the Cumberland Lodge MSc study trip How did you find it Whatrsquos the most valuable thing you gathered from the experience JH I thoroughly enjoyed the trip We had a full schedule for the two days which was great We got a lot done and it kept us on our toes I liked how the organisers put us into groups according to the following themes

Crisis of the single market

(Re)development of European institutions

Europe and the Future of the European idea

The European Crisis from a global perspective It was an opportunity to try and understand Europe from a different point of view to leave your comfort zone of EPE I chose the global stream and got a flavour of IPE I realised that sometimes a slant in perspective

of the same subject matter can make a real difference It was also a fantastic opportunity to meet people in PGEU and Ideas and Identities whether that was over tea and a biscuit or a beer later in the evening It can be very easy in LSE just to focus on your immediate friends and work however I think opportunities are missed if you don‟t expand your horizons Finally I really appreciated how the speakers and organisers were so approachable and willing to spend time with us after the workshops it definitely added to the experience A big thank you to Or and Hartmut for organising a great trip What did you think of the venue JH I love history I studied it in my undergrad and am the type of person who would make historical sightseeing a top priority on any trip Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the history of Cumberland Lodge with its portraits of the Royal family dotted around everywhere the period details the old-fashioned fireplaces in the bedrooms and of course the welcoming hearth at the centre of the house The house is wonderfully situated in Windsor Park and the light covering of snow in the countryside set off its charms beautifully It is a unique venue Where are you originally from and name one thing that this place is famous for JH I was born in Drogheda Co Louth Ireland The town is famous for housing the shrine of St Oliver Plunkett who was Oliver Cromwell‟s contemporary Drogheda is the first town in Ireland that Cromwell attacked and placed under siege in his attempt to wrest political control of the country St Oliver Plunkett spent his life trying to improve citizens‟ lives under the Penal laws that Cromwell later introduced It links back quite well to Cumberland Lodge actually as it was Cromwell who gifted the land to Captain John Byfield who in turn built the lodge Which living person do you most admire JH I admire Mary Robinson She was Ireland‟s first female President elected in 1990 and served for two terms She was the figurehead for a country that experienced deep economic and social change in a short space of time I think she did a remarkable job The role itself is quite limited like the Queen she is the constitutional head of the country However she managed to breathe new life into the role She used the position to speak out for human rights to reach out to the Irish diaspora (previously neglected by Irish politicians) to inch closer to a resolution in the North and was the first Irish Head of State to meet Queen Elizabeth II I‟m proud of what she achieved in a role that was considered to be a retirement position for politicians

Sixty-second Interview

Page 6 Monthly European Institute Newsletter

What are you addicted to JH Right now True Blood and chocolate I don‟t know which is worse Where is your favourite place on the LSE campus JH Definitely has to be the Shaw Library Lovely ambiance old books terrace and wonderful lunchtime concerts A gem What type of music do you like and who is your favourite artistband JH The music I listen to really depends on the activity Classical for essay writing dancepop for the gym latinodance80‟s cheese for nights out and easy listening in the evenings (London Heart radio) I don‟t have a favourite artistband but Spotify is definitely my favourite program for exploring all there is out there With which famousinfamous person would you like to have dinner and why JH I would like to have dinner with Wallis Simpson King Edward VIII abdicated in 1936 in order to marry her Nobody ever got her side of the story It was such a scandalous episode After they got married they toured Germany which was obviously preparing for war under Hitler at that stage Rather controversial They lived in exile for the rest of their lives It‟s a wonderful story Even to put it in context I think the 1930s was such an exciting decade in the twentieth century the lull between two world wars the rise of alternative ideologies to democracy political tensions between countries the budding recognition that women had something to offer in the workplace I would just like to know what happened what her motivations were how she perceived her world and the role of women at the time Also to find out whether she was happy with her choice I believe her diaries were (re)discovered a few months ago so perhaps we‟ll find out in due course

Ps This choice was NOT made because of Madonnarsquos latest directorial adventure

The European Crisis from a global perspective It was an opportunity to try and understand Europe from a different point of view to leave your comfort zone of EPE I chose the global stream and got a flavour of IPE I realised that sometimes a slant in perspective

of the same subject matter can make a real difference It was also a fantastic opportunity to meet people in PGEU and Ideas and Identities whether that was over tea and a biscuit or a beer later in the evening It can be very easy in LSE just to focus on your immediate friends and work however I think opportunities are missed if you don‟t expand your horizons Finally I really appreciated how the speakers and organisers were so approachable and willing to spend time with us after the workshops it definitely added to the experience A big thank you to Or and Hartmut for organising a great trip What did you think of the venue JH I love history I studied it in my undergrad and am the type of person who would make historical sightseeing a top priority on any trip Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the history of Cumberland Lodge with its portraits of the Royal family dotted around everywhere the period details the old-fashioned fireplaces in the bedrooms and of course the welcoming hearth at the centre of the house The house is wonderfully situated in Windsor Park and the light covering of snow in the countryside set off its charms beautifully It is a unique venue Where are you originally from and name one thing that this place is famous for JH I was born in Drogheda Co Louth Ireland The town is famous for housing the shrine of St Oliver Plunkett who was Oliver Cromwell‟s contemporary Drogheda is the first town in Ireland that Cromwell attacked and placed under siege in his attempt to wrest political control of the country St Oliver Plunkett spent his life trying to improve citizens‟ lives under the Penal laws that Cromwell later introduced It links back quite well to Cumberland Lodge actually as it was Cromwell who gifted the land to Captain John Byfield who in turn built the lodge Which living person do you most admire JH I admire Mary Robinson She was Ireland‟s first female President elected in 1990 and served for two terms She was the figurehead for a country that experienced deep economic and social change in a short space of time I think she did a remarkable job The role itself is quite limited like the Queen she is the constitutional head of the country However she managed to breathe new life into the role She used the position to speak out for human rights to reach out to the Irish diaspora (previously neglected by Irish politicians) to inch closer to a resolution in the North and was the first Irish Head of State to meet Queen Elizabeth II I‟m proud of what she achieved in a role that was considered to be a retirement position for politicians

hellipwith Jeanette Healy current European Institute MSc European Political Economy student
