Monthly Newsletter October 2016 Issue 3 Greetings Greyhound Nation, As we begin the month of October, we find ourselves three quarters of the way through the first nine weeks and well on our way toward meeting our goals. There are several events that took place this past month that I would like to highlight, starting with the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, September 11th at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center. Amanda Fishbein, Alivia Bienz and Andrew Flores were chosen to showcase their artistic talent by painting a utility box commemorating those who paid the ultimate price on that day. The box was unveiled at the ceremony inside the Civic Center. (please see page ) Janelly Ronquillo, Jordan Mead and Racheal Capezza also assisted in painting the box. We are certainly proud of the accolades these students received from the local community for their vision, hard work and dedication. Their work will be displayed at the school district office. Congratulations to Ms. Duran, Art Teacher for being selected as a 2016 FAEA Member Virtual Exhibition winner for her ceramic entry, “Innocent Hearts” and to Ms. VanDereedt, Science Teacher for being awarded funding for her classroom project, “Measuring Success with Digital Scales” through DonorsChoose.Org. Ms. VanDereedt was awarded funds to purchase 8 Etekcity 500g Digital Pocket Scales to support the project. Way to go Greyhounds!!! A warm welcome to our newest Greyhound and 11th grade English Language Arts teacher, Ms. Elizabeth Cronin. Ms. Cronin is no stranger to education, as she was a previous reading teacher in the district and has returned home to pursue her passion in education. As many of you are aware, “Dads Take Your Child to School” Day took place on Wednesday, September 28th. This annual event was a huge success, as it marked the continuation of a movement and not a just a moment. Over 130 dads, father figures and role models brought their child to school and participated in the festivities that included signing the pledge, committing to support their child’s teacher and our school by volunteering at school events and ensuring education remains a high priority in the lives of their children. Please be sure to review our monthly calendar for upcoming events and opportunities for “Dads” and role models. There are other upcoming events parents and students should be aware of during the month of October. We do apologize for having to reschedule last month’s “Parent Night;” however, it has now been rescheduled for Tuesday, October 18th, from 6:00-8:00 PM in the LPA Auditorium. This is open to all high school students and parents interested in finding out additional information about high school programs, graduation requirements, college preparedness, financial aid and Florida Bright Futures. As a reminder, please be sure to review our list of important dates. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents and community partners for your support and continued partnership, as we work together to ensure our students are successful in all they set out to do. As we move forward, it is my hope that we build upon our partnership and continue to further develop the relationships that will ultimately lead toward increased student achievement. “One School; One Team; One Theme” Sincerely, HENRY SANABRIA Principal

  • DP students have been engaged in learning new material and gaining useful insights which help them apply their new knowledge. All DP students will be working on their CAS portfolios and the Extended Essay throughout October. I am proud of the effort and excitement our students invest in their schoolwork. October brings the end of the first quarter and the beginning of a promising and productive season for the second quarter. For continued success, see below for a few suggestions to help keep a steady momentum in developing and utilizing effective study habits.

Ø Focus on a major goal. It can be something specific and measurable—like raising your GPA to a desired number, earning an A in a rigorous class, or achieving a certain score on your SAT or ACT exams. It should be a challenging but realistic goal.

Ø Determine the steps you need to follow. Compose a list of clear and reachable objectives (like getting at least an A- on a major assignment) and note any distractions to avoid (try cutting back on time online and text messaging).

Ø Stay organized. Organization is the key to reaching any academic goal. Create a calendar to keep track of when assignments are due and have the syllabus for each of your courses handy. Know what is expected each day and discipline yourself to stay on schedule.

Ø Take advantage of study groups. If your goal is to do well on a standardized test or any type of assessment, be sure to attend practice sessions and study with friends before or after school. Sustained practice is critical for improvement.

Ø Motivate yourself. Reaching your academic goal is valuable in itself, but if you also focus on another way to stay motivated you may be more likely to succeed. Think of what makes you happy and look forward to rewarding yourself.

    Kind regards,
