As we wander the big world of Plumbing I never cease to be amazed by the ingenu-ity of Architects, Engineers and Government. It seems the good folks in San Fran-cisco California have a problem with an abundance of Homeless people and resis-tance from the Building Owners to make private property toilet facilities accessible to this segment of the community. We in Pittsburgh, to a lesser degree, have a simi-lar problem. Nonetheless, lets get back to the proposed solution….. POOPLETS This is to be a portable total restroom facility, set in a parking space where needed, and available to any public user. The article I read did not go into great detail about the water supply, waste disposal, housekeeping, nor security. I cannot say that it won’t work, but I remember the Edsel automobile. A great idea that had very good features and ideas that were not really well designed and tested before the product was put in the market place. As you know from the last meeting our 2012 Day Planner is to have a section iden-tified as Friends of ASPE where a quarter, half or full page ad can be placed in the publication. This is intended to allow small firms or individuals to get representa-tion at a low cost. We need some rubber on the road activity by members to fill these pages. The board is asking each member to contact an employer, an associate or just a friend of ASPE to consider a quarter page ad at $80.00. If anyone has an idea on how to promote this section of the Day Planner speak up and we will fol-low up. I want to take a few lines to ask members who may not have been at a meeting in a while to make a special effort to attend this months meeting. Last months topic was timely, interesting and we had Mike Como there to answer questions on how the use of a central control for water temperature is to be handled by the Allegheny County Health Department, Plumbing Section. The bottom line is that in an Engi-neered System for a major facility the system will be considered on its merits and accepted. Thanks…..Jerry

Greetings to all, and welcome to the Pittsburgh Chapter of ASPE. It's our Oc-tober 10th, 2011 meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that could make it for our last meeting. The ASPE folks who attend help make the monthly meeting a success. We also urge you to bring colleagues with you, to our meeting if they are in-terested in the presentation or becoming a member. You do not have to be a member to attend the meeting. Our October meeting will include a popular thermal heat tracing technology. This will be a very informative presentation for contractors, engineers, design-ers. This will be presented by Mr. Mark Hall. Also a table top of selected prod-ucts will be on display from Tyco thermal products for your review. I look for-ward to seeing you all there. We have openings left for the presentations coming up. If there is a specific topic you would enjoy, or would like to make a presentation, for the second session of this year then, please contact me at the meeting or at my email ad-dress [email protected] cell phone number is 412-596-7444. The “Plumbing Systems & Design” magazine still offers members a way of earning CEU’s at no cost. September's topic for CEU’s is on “Automatic sprin-kler systems”. Members will need to log in at www.psdmagazine.org, read the article and take the exam online. By receiving a 90% or better, you have the potential of receiving 0.1 CEU’s. Thanks, Barry

From your Yearbook Committee:

Please remember that our membership roster in the annual Pittsburgh Chapter Day Planner is populated using the current roster that is obtained from the ASPE national roster. To assure that the correct information appears in our year-book I am asking that all members take a few moments and log in to the ASPE website (www.aspe.org) and double check their information. The instructions to do this are located below.

Once logged on, review your profile. We thank you in advance for you continued support.

ASPE History Lesson

The year was 1964 and on September 17th Bewitched, starring Elizabeth Montgom-ery, premiered on ABC. The very next day September 18 as “Samantha Stevens was wiggling her nose to perform some magic”; The American Society of Plumb-ing Engineers (ASPE) was incorporated in Los Angeles, CA. The first board of directors elected to a one-year term was as follows: • President: Donald F. Dickerson • 1st Vice President: Horace Yeh • 2nd Vice President: Edward Saltzberg • 3rd Vice President: Richard Owens • Administrative Secretary: Eugene Mandel • Treasurer: Richard W. Drenske • Corresponding Secretary: Wayne Jensen  The first ASPE chapter, Los Angeles was also chartered along with the first ASPE Data Book being presented to the Data Book Committee in loose-leaf binder format that year. Stay tuned in future newsletters for some other interesting information on ASPE and our Chapter. Maybe we will even run a few Trivia games throughout the year at the monthly meetings for some good prizes. Your Chapter Historian Don Ditter
