“You are the light of the world” Last Sunday we celebrated our ‘enlightenment’. We

remembered that moment when our baptismal candle was handed to our Godparents for safe keeping with the words:

‘receive the light of Christ’.

The priest went on to say to our Godparents: ‘Dear parents and Godparents, this light is entrusted to you to be kept

burning brightly. This child of yours has been enlightened by Christ. May they walk always as a child of light. May they keep the flame of faith alive in their hearts and when the Lord Comes again, may they go out to meet Him with all

the Saints of the Heavenly Kingdom.’

This Sunday Jesus says to us: You are the light of the world….your light must shine out in the sight of all men’.

Let’s pray today that the flame of faith may grow brighter in our hearts and that we may truly be the light of the world.

Confiteor I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. . Gloria in excelsis Deo Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you; we bless you; we adore you, we glorify you; we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Year A

First Reading Isaiah 58:7-10 Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry, and shelter the homeless poor, clothe the man you see to be naked and do not turn from your own kin. Then will your light shine like the dawn and your wound be quickly healed over. Your integrity will go before you and the glory of the Lord behind you. Cry, and the Lord will answer; call, and he will say, ‘I am here.’ If you do away with the yoke, the clenched fist, the wicked word, if you give your bread to the hungry, and relief to the oppressed, your light will rise in the darkness, and your shadows become like noon. Responsorial Psalm: The good man is a light in the darkness for the upright Second Reading 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 When I came to you, brothers, it was not with any show of oratory or philosophy, but simply to tell you what God had guaranteed. During my stay with you, the only knowledge I claimed to have was about Jesus, and only about him as the crucified Christ. Far from relying on any power of my own, I came among you in great ‘fear and trembling’ and in my speeches and the sermons that I gave, there were none of the arguments that belong to philosophy; only a demonstration of the power of the Spirit. And I did this so that your faith should not depend on human philosophy but on the power of God.

The Gospel acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! I am the light of the world, says the Lord; anyone who follows me will have the light of life. Alleluia!

Entrance antiphon: Come let us worship God and bow low before the God who made us, for He is the Lord our God.

The Gospel Matthew 5: 13-16 Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men. ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.’ Credo I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. AMEN

As you know, one of our parish goals this year is to establish Immaculate Conception as a ‘centre of devotion’ with a daily programme of prayer and devotion. (We hope to begin this in Lent)

We hope to establish:

• Morning, Midday and Evening Prayer on Tues, Wed and Fri

• Times for the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet and other Devotions

• A day of Eucharist Adoration every Thursday

Volunteers are needed to help cover the 1-hour slots for Adoration and we need to always have at least two people present during times of Exposition. We also need willing volunteers to lead times of prayer and acts of devotion during the day …..Can you help? Devotions / time of prayer and Thursday Adoration will take place between 10am and 7pm. If you have some time to spare, please speak to Fr John.

Baptism Preparation: If you would like to arrange for your child to be baptised, please contact Deacon Andrew: Email: [email protected]

One Parish Choir Practice: We had a fantastic session on Tuesday…we will next meet on

Tuesday 18th Feb after 7pm Mass. ALL WELCOME!

Catechism The Penny

During the course of the year, we shall gently make our way through the ‘Penny Catechism’. The Penny Catechism was given its name because of its original cost of one penny. While the price has changed, The Faith has not! This handy catechism gives 307 questions and answers on all aspects of the Catholic Faith. Having been approved by the Archbishops and Bishops of England and Wales for use in their dioceses, it is an official catechism of the Catholic Church. Topics covered include: God, the Sacraments, the Ten Commandments, the Precepts of the Church, grace, virtue, sins and what all this means for us and our eternal end.

61. In making the sign of the cross how are we reminded that Christ died for us on the Cross?

In making the sign of the cross we are reminded that Christ died for us on the Cross by the very form of the cross which we make upon ourselves.

The Fifth Article of the Creed

62. What is the fifth article of the Creed?

The fifth article of the Creed is, 'he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead'.

63. What do you mean by the words, 'he descended into hell'?

By the words 'he descended into hell' I mean that, as soon as Christ was dead, his blessed Soul went down into that part of hell called Limbo.

64. What do you mean by Limbo?

By Limbo I mean a place of rest, where the souls of the just who died before Christ were detained.

65. Why were the souls of the just detained in Limbo?

The souls of the just were detained in Limbo because they could not go up to the kingdom of heaven till Christ had opened it for them.

66. What do you mean by the words, 'the third day he rose again from the dead'?

By the words, 'the third day he rose again from the dead', I mean that, after Christ had been dead and buried part of three days, he raised his blessed Body to life again on the third day.

67. On what day did Christ rise again from the dead?

Christ rose again from the dead on Easter Sunday.

The Sixth Article of the Creed

The year 2020 has been designated as the year of ‘The God who speaks’ …

We are invited to reflect on our relationship with God’s Word in Sacred Scripture.

What is the Bible?

The word ‘Bible’ comes from a Greek word meaning ‘books’. When we hold the Bible in our hands, we are holding a library of books, bound together inside the one cover.

Just like in any library, before we begin to take a book off the shelf and begin to read it, we have to ascertain the kind or type of book we have and how we should read it… the genre matters!

We cannot read history and poetry in the same way…we cannot approach law or prophecy in the same way either.

So, the Bible is a library. It’s made up of many different styles of writing. There are many ‘contributors’ to the books of the Bible, but there is only one Author, and that is God the Holy Spirit.

We say at Mass ‘the Word of the Lord’…. Not the word of Paul!!!

Although St Paul and the others where the instruments used to scribe the Word, they were under the influence and the guidance of God the Holy Spirit.

When it comes to reading the Bible, we have to do it within its proper context. It’s not a ‘standalone’ it is a fruit of the life of the Church (Tradition) and the constant teaching of the Church (magisterium) throughout time.

No meat on Ash Wednesday (or on any Friday as usual)

Both Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting

How are you going to deny the self during these weeks?

How are you going to intensify your prayer and works of Charity?

Ash Wednesday is now fast approaching…..it’s on Wednesday 26th of February.

Now is the time for us to begin to think about how we will live differently in Lent….

Now is the time to prepare! Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

What are you going to do? What are you going to give up? How will you spend your prayer time? Will you do some spiritual reading?

There will be the usual formation sessions during Lent, plus the extra scripture sessions (for the Year of the God who speaks).

We will also have the opportunity to attend times of prayer at Immaculate Conception as we begin to put plans into motion in developing it as a centre of prayer and devotion.

What do you intend to do? MORE IMPORTANTLY…..what is the Lord asking you to do?

Have you asked Him?

great confidence, trusting in your love and your support.

Pour out your love and blessing upon us as we discern the Father’s
