Crime Solvers History Crime Solvers was established in 1978 as the

first in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

June 16, 1978 - Research began into the program development.

October 1978 - Board of Directors established.

November 1, 1978 - First media telecast.

February 1, 1980 - Crime Solvers became a non-profit corporation.

Our Crime Solver Mission is as citizens, to have an impact on the community to reduce crime by assisting law enforcement agencies solve crimes and prosecute offenders through the development of information based on tips provided by anonymous community members.

Our Vision:

To grow our capabilities in Montgomery County through partnerships with the community, law enforcement, and businesses, based on the fact that someone knows something about a serious criminal act. The belief that good conscious will prevail and information given anonymously will have a positive impact on solving crimes, reducing violence, and make the county a safer place to live, work, and raise a family.

Tip line guarantees anonymity and is never taped.

Tip line is staffed 24/7 by Alternative Answers.

Tip line offers bi-lingual call takers (Spanish, English, and French).

Tipster is given a caller ID number (ex: 09-123) and encouraged to call back for status in the case.

If a call-taker feels that the information provided is urgent, investigators and/or officers are notified immediately.

How Does Crime Solvers Work? Crime Solvers works with the Montgomery County, Chevy Chase

Village, Rockville, Gaithersburg, and Takoma Park Police Departments.

When a felony crime occurs, police will present a case and request a reward from Crime Solvers.

The facts of the case will be furnished to the community through a press release, postings on the Crime Solvers website, postings on the police website, and if possible the news media.

Citizens with information concerning that particular crime are encouraged to call the toll-free anonymous Crime Solvers line at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).

This information is passed on to the law enforcement agency and if the information leads to an arrest and/or indictment, the tipster is entitled to a reward of up to $1,000.

John Mohammed, 41, and Lee Malvo, 17, began a killing spree that struck fear in all of the citizens of Montgomery County, MD and the surrounding area.

14 victims shot, 10 died.

Original witness accounts describe a white box truck leaving the scene of shootings.

Calls with tips were received on the Crime Solvers line before a F.B.I. tip line was established.
