A Brief History of Monterey Jazz Festival All-Star Bands“All-Star” bands have been a long-standing tradition at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Beginning in 1966, the Festival has assembled master jazz musicians under the “Monterey All-Stars” banner. Since then, more than 20 Monterey All-Star bands have graced the stages of Monterey, and have featured artists like Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Elvin Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Ray Brown, Sonny Stitt, Max Roach, John Lewis, Shelly Manne, Bobby Hutcherson, Hank Jones, Milt Jackson, and many others.

To celebrate the Festival’s 50th anniversary in 2007, General Manager and Artistic Director Tim Jackson decided to break the Monterey Jazz Festival All-Star mold by taking these special bands nationwide to embody the past, present and future of jazz history, and to spread the Monterey Jazz Festival’s artistic footprint beyond the Monterey County Fairgrounds. The All-Star bands have performed at the September Festival and then toured in the early months of the following year, with Jackson calling on musicians with a close relationship with Monterey that represent both its musical excellence and jazz education activities—both core components of Monterey Jazz Festival’s mission statement.

Members of the All-Star touring groups have been previous Monterey Artists-In-Residence, have participated as students in the Festival’s springtime Next Generation Jazz Festival or have been members of Monterey’s hand-chosen Next Generation Jazz Orchestra as high school students; or have otherwise made strong and lasting contributions to jazz education. Since the touring groups have gone on the road, Monterey Jazz Festival has reached more than 104,000 fans in 135 shows across the United States and Canada. Previous tours took place in 2008, 2010 and 2013.

2015–16 Monterey Jazz Festival will present its fourth national tour in 2016, again featuring critically-acclaimed, GRAMMY-winning jazz artists. The Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour 2016 band features Nicholas Payton on trumpet; Ravi Coltrane on tenor and soprano saxophones; musical director Gerald Clayton on piano; Joe Sanders on bass; and Kendrick Scott on drums. Raul Midón is the featured vocalist and guitarist. The band will perform 28 shows in 10 states, including a five-night run at Birdland in New York City.

Ravi Coltrane first appeared at Monterey in 2001, nearly 41 years to the day after his own father made his debut at Monterey in 1960. Nicholas Payton was Monterey’s Artist-In-Residence in 2000, and Gerald Clayton, Joe Sanders and Kendrick Scott, some of the rising stars in the jazz world, have been performers on Monterey stages and as high school students at the Festival’s student competition, the Next Generation Jazz Festival. Raul Midón, one of music’s most distinctive and searching voices, has appeared at Monterey three times since 2011.

Gerald Clayton acts as musical director for the group, and has a long history with the festival, both as a student and as a performing artist. A scholarship and soloist award winner at Monterey’s 2000 and 2001 springtime Next Generation Jazz Festival with the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Clayton made trio appearances at Monterey in 2010 and 2012 with Joe Sanders, and recently performed in 2014 in a duo with Charles Lloyd.

Kendrick Scott helms the drum position on the tour. A three-time Berklee/Monterey group drummer from 1999–2003, Scott has played at MJF nine times. Additionally, he was the drummer with MJF’s 50th Anniversary All-Stars on the 54-date tour in 2008, and performed on Terence Blanchard’s GRAMMY-winning recording with the band.

singer Dianne Reeves—underscores why People magazine called Midón “an eclectic adventurist.”

NICHOLAS PAYTONMulti-instrumentalist and trumpet master Nicholas Payton is one of the greatest artists of our time. Hailed as a virtuoso before he was even out of high school, his talent and skill have earned him praise and accolades, as well as

insured his place in musical history. When he was barely in his 20s, Payton made his major-label recording debut as a leader with From This Moment (Verve). Since then, Payton has consistently committed himself to developing his distinct voice.

Payton was born in New Orleans into a musical family. He showed a talent for music at a very early age, and by the age of 12 he was a member of the All-Star Brass Band that performed and toured extensively. During his high school years, Payton attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts to study with Clyde Kerr Jr., and after graduation attended the University of New Orleans, where he studied with Harold Battiste and Ellis Marsalis.

His classic Verve recordings include From This Moment (1994); Gumbo Nouveau (1995); the GRAMMY-winning Doc Cheatham & Nicholas Payton (1997); Payton’s Place (1998); Nick@Night (1999); and Dear Louis (2001); Sonic Trance (2003, Warner Bros.); Into the Blue (2008, Nonesuch); Bitches (2011, In+Out Records). Payton now records for his own imprint, Paytone Records™, where he has released Numbers, and the iconic Sketches of Spain. Payton released #BAM Live at Bohemian Caverns (2013), his first recording for his then-newly-formed label, BMF Records.

As is evident, Payton spans a multitude of musical genres having composed and arranged, performed and recorded with his own groups in many settings, including solo, duo, trio, quartet, quintet, sextet, 21-piece big band, as well as with a full orchestra on his 2012 work, The Black American Symphony.

Significant collaborators include projects with Trey Anastasio, Ray Brown, Ray Charles, Daniel Lanois, Dr. John, Stanley Jordan, Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes, Joe Henderson, Zigaboo Modeliste, Marcus Roberts, Jill Scott, Clark Terry, Allen Toussaint, Chucho Valdes, Dr. Michael White, Nancy Wilson, and many others. He is credited on over 120 recordings as a composer, arranger, special guest or sideman.

Payton has performed at major concert halls and festivals worldwide, and some of his television and film credits include Kansas City (Robert Altman, director); original music featured in HBO’s Treme Seasons 2 and 3, and on FX Channel’s The Americans; Nick @ Night; Icons Among Us documentary; the GRAMMY Awards; The Tonight Show; The Tonight Show Brazil; and EBS TV (Korea). He appears in the final episode of HBO’s Treme as an actor and musician.

He has also served as Distinguished Artist and Visiting Lecturer at Tulane University and has taught master classes, clinics and workshops at more than 40 institutions, including Berklee College of Music, The Connecticut Forum (with Beverly Sills, Bobby Weir and Trey Anastasio), Cornell University, Institute of Superior Arts (Havana, Cuba), Loyola University, Northwestern University, Oberlin College and Conservatory, Skidmore College, Stanford University, Thelonious Monk Institute, and many more.

RAVI COLTRANE Ravi Coltrane is a critically-acclaimed GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist, bandleader and composer. In the course of a 20-plus-year career, Coltrane has worked as a sideman to many, recorded noteworthy albums for

himself and others, and founded a prominent independent record label, RKM.

Born in Long Island, the second son of John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane, he was named after Indian sitar legend Ravi Shankar. Coltrane was raised in Los Angeles where his family moved after his father’s death in 1967. His mother, Alice Coltrane, was a significant influence on Ravi and it was he who encouraged Alice to return to performance and the recording studio after a long absence. Subsequently, Ravi produced and played on Alice Coltrane’s powerful Translinear Light, released in 2004.

Coltrane has released six albums as a leader. His latest, Spirit Fiction, was released in June 2012 for the Blue Note label. Additional credits include performances as well as recordings with Elvin Jones, Terence Blanchard, Kenny Barron, Steve Coleman, McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJohnette, Matt Garrison, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Geri Allen, Joanne Brackeen, and The Blue Note 7, among others. He is a co-leader of the Saxophone Summit with Joe Lovano and Dave Liebman.

Coltrane lives in Brooklyn, New York, and maintains a fast-paced touring, recording, composing and performance schedule. He leads the effort to restore the John Coltrane Home in Dix Hills, Long Island, and presides over important reissues of his parents’ recordings.

RAUL MIDÓNSinger-songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón has earned renown as one of music’s most distinctive and searching voices. He is “a one-man band who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus,” according to the New

York Times. Midón has collaborated with such heroes as Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder, along with contributing to recordings by Jason Mraz, Queen Latifah and Snoop Dogg and the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s She Hate Me. The New Mexico native, blind since birth, has released seven albums since 1999, including the hit studio productions State of Mind (Manhattan/EMI, 2005), A World Within a World (Manhattan/EMI, 2007) and Synthesis (Decca/Universal, 2009). Midón’s most recent release is the captivating CD/DVD Invisible Chains — Live from NYC. Attuned listeners can hear the inspirations of Donny Hathaway and Richie Havens in his work, as well as Sting and Paul Simon. But Midón’s questing musicality makes him, as the Huffington Post put it, “a free man beyond category.”

A vibrant presence on screen, Midón can be seen in the documentary on Hancock’s star-studded album Possibilities, and he is featured collaborating with soul icon Bill Withers in the documentary Still Bill. Midón has also demonstrated his progressive techniques by performing for the series of TED Talks. Ever since being told as a child that his blindness meant that “you can’t do this, you can’t do that,” Midón has lived a life devoted to shattering stereotypes. His new album, Don’t Hesitate, has the singer-guitarist adding producer-engineer to his portfolio of talents, with special computer software for the blind enabling him to engineer sessions on his own in his home studio. This project—which includes collaborations with Withers, R&B singer-songwriter Lizz Wright, Cameroonian jazz bassist Richard Bona and GRAMMY-winning jazz

His first teacher, Catherine McGinn, is a member of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and guided Sanders throughout middle school and high school. In 2002, he attended the Brubeck Institute to study under the tutelage of Christian McBride. After two years with McBride and the many other jazz masters who passed through the Institute, Sanders felt ready to head to New York, and through gigs and jam sessions, Sanders’ name was heard more widely in the city. In 2005, Sanders moved to Los Angeles to attend the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute, under Artistic Director Terence Blanchard. While at the Monk Institute, Sanders honed his skills even further and embraced new musical concepts brought on by Blanchard. He was also challenged by others who were brought into the Monk Institute to share their concepts such as Jason Moran, Benny Golson, Wynton Marsalis, Stefon Harris and Lewis Nash, to name a few. During this time, Sanders took one-on-one lessons from exceptional bassists who have always inspired him to keep moving forward, including John Clayton, Bob Hurst, Ron Carter and Charlie Haden.

Upon graduation from the Thelonious Monk Institute, Sanders returned to New York City. Recently, he placed second in the finals of both the International Society of Bassists Jazz Bass Competition and the Thelonious Monk Institute’s International Jazz Bass Competition. He leads his own band, Joe Sanders’ Infinity, and tours extensively in Europe and the States with Gerald Clayton Trio. He currently lives in Paris.

KENDRICK SCOTT Drummer and composer Kendrick Scott was born in Houston, TX, in 1980 and grew up in a family of musicians. By age eight, he had taken up the drums and he later attended Houston’s renowned High School

for the Performing and Visual Arts, a school which has produced an impressive array of musical talent, including Jason Moran and Robert Glasper, Beyoncé, and many others. While still attending HSPVA, Scott won several DownBeat magazine student awards, as well as the Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Award from the International Association of Jazz Educators. He was later awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music, where he majored in music education.

“Kendrick Scott has become the Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, and Tony Williams of his generation,” says Terence Blanchard. “He’s a brilliant mind bringing innovation to the music at the same time as creating a safe place for young talent to develop and grow.”

Scott has toured with Herbie Hancock, Charles Lloyd, The Crusaders, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kurt Elling and Terence Blanchard, also appearing on several of the trumpeter’s Blue Note albums including Flow, A Tale Of God’s Will, and Magnetic. He has released three albums as the leader of his group, Oracle: The Source, Conviction, and his 2015 Blue Note debut, We Are the Drum.

Scott is also member of the Blue Note Records 75th Anniversary all-star band that includes Ambrose Akinmusire, Robert Glasper, Derrick Hodge, Lionel Loueke, and Marcus Strickland.

GERALD CLAYTONOver the course of eight years, with three albums as a leader, several studio projects as a sideman, and countless worldwide performances, pianist and composer Gerald Clayton has established himself as a leading

figure in the up-and-coming generation of jazz artists who are fluent in the range of styles that make up today’s jazz lexicon. Hailed by The New York Times for his “huge, authoritative presence,” Clayton is well on his way toward etching his own enduring mark in the long and rich tradition of jazz.

Born in the Netherlands in 1984 and raised in Southern California, Clayton took his first piano lessons before age seven with the full support and encouragement of his father, the acclaimed jazz bassist, composer and bandleader John Clayton. Music was a central part of his life from as long as he can remember and it became a lifetime commitment. Clayton attended the L.A. County High School for the Arts and then enrolled at the USC Thornton School of Music. In the midst of his third year at USC, he temporarily relocated to New York to study at the Manhattan School of Music.

In 2006, Clayton received the second place prize in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Piano Competition. Around that time, he was introduced to trumpeter Roy Hargrove when they were both featured artists at a performance of the Henry Mancini Orchestra.

The association resulted in three years of extensive touring with Hargrove between 2006 and 2009, and appearances on Hargrove’s recordings, Earfood (2008) and Emergence (2009). Clayton also appeared on recordings by several other artists, such as Diana Krall,

Ambrose Akinmusire, Kendrick Scott, Melissa Morgan, Terell Stafford and Dick Oatts, and more recently Michael Rodriguez, Dayna Stephens, Terri Lyne Carrington, and the Clayton Brothers Quintet, led by his father and his uncle, saxophonist Jeff Clayton. Gerald continues to perform regularly with the Clayton Brothers.

In 2009, he released Two Shade, his debut album as a leader with bassist Joe Sanders and drummer Justin Brown, and Clayton received a 2010 GRAMMY nomination for ‘Best Improvised Jazz Solo’ for his rendition of Cole Porter’s “All of You.” Sanders and Brown have remained with him for his two subsequent records, and in 2011, Clayton received a second GRAMMY nomination, this time for Best Jazz Instrumental Composition, for his piece “Battle Circle” featured on the Clayton Brothers recording, The New Song and Dance. Clayton released his sophomore album, Bond: The Paris Sessions in 2011, and received his third GRAMMY nomination, this time for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. Life Forum was released in April 2013 on Concord Records, and is his most ambitious project to date.

JOE SANDERSJoe Sanders has made a name for himself through his versatility, dedication and steady pulse. He is without doubt, one of the most sought-after young bass players of his generation. He has played, recorded and

toured with many great musicians—including Ravi Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Heath, Wayne Shorter, Dave Brubeck, Mulgrew Miller, Geri Allen, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Karriem Riggins, Nicholas Payton, Roy Hargrove, Gerald Clayton (whose album Two Shade was nominated for a 2010 GRAMMY); Geoffery Keezer, Lionel Loueke, Aaron Parks, Chris Potter, Ambrose Akinmusire, Christian Scott, and Taylor Eigsti.

RAMSEY LEWISComposer, pianist and jazz legend Ramsey Lewis has been referred to as “the great performer,” a title reflecting his performance style and musical selections that display his early gospel playing and classical training along with his love of jazz and other musical forms. A native Chicagoan (born May 27, 1935), Lewis represents the great diversity of music for which Chicago is noted.

Lewis first captivated fans with his first album Ramsey Lewis and the Gentlemen of Swing by the Ramsey Lewis Trio in 1956. By 1965, he was one of the nation’s most successful jazz pianists, topping the charts with “The In Crowd,” “Hang On Sloopy” and “Wade In The Water.” He has three Grammy Awards and seven gold records to his credit. Often called legendary, Lewis concedes “It’s a high honor when someone says so, but I don’t see myself that way. What keeps me enthusiastic and energizes me, is the realization that the more I learn, the more I find there is to know.” He received the 2006 Stellar Award for Best Gospel Instrumental Album, With One Voice presented in January 2007. He was also the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award in January 2007. Lewis has received four honorary doctorate degrees and numerous other accolades.

Lewis began taking piano lessons at the age of four, studying the basics and fundamentals. But, “It wasn’t until I started studying with the late Dorothy Mendelsohn that I responded to some of the startling things she was teaching me, such as ‘Listen with your inner ear,’ and ‘Make the piano sing.’ These concepts were revelations!” Soon after, he began learning Bach, Beethoven, Haydn, Brahms and Chopin, and other basic piano repertoire for the concert pianist.

Except for records his father played around the house, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Mead Lux Lewis and others, Lewis had no experience

playing jazz. He was 15 when a fellow church musician, Wallace Burton, asked him to join his jazz band and took the time to coach and help the young musician learn the language of jazz. It was a brand new experience for him. The seven-piece group called themselves “The Cleffs” and provided Lewis’ first real involvement with the great music of jazz. The emerging Ramsey Lewis Trio had its roots as the rhythm section (comprised of Lewis on piano, Eldee Young on bass and Redd Holt on drums) and remained after the other members of the Cleffs went off to the Korean War. “Jazz soon became a major force in my musical life, but European classical and gospel music were of almost equal importance,” he recalls.

In addition to recording albums and performing live, Lewis hosted WNUA-FM Chicago’s weekday morning drive-time radio show, The Ramsey Lewis Morning Show, from 1997-2009, for which he was awarded R&R’s (Radio&Records) 1999 and 2000 Personality of the Year Award. The syndicated Ramsey Lewis Morning Show ran from 2007–2009 nationwide. His syndicated Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis radio program continues to air in a number of cities throughout the United States.

Active in community efforts, especially on behalf of youth, he helped organize the Ravinia Festival’s Jazz Mentor Program and also serves as the artistic director for that festival’s jazz series. In January 2007, the Dave Brubeck Institute invited Lewis to be on the Honorary Board of Friends of the Brubeck Institute at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. He also serves on the board of trustees for the Merit School of Music, an inner city music program in downtown Chicago, as well as on the board of trustees of the first public high school for the performing arts in Chicago, The Chicago High School for the Arts, and is a member of Loyola University (Chicago) Council of Regents. Early 2005 saw the formation of the Ramsey Lewis Foundation,

influences were Kenny Burrell, George Benson and most significantly, Wes Montgomery. While influenced by these great guitarists, Johnson also cites the music of Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, big bands and jazz orchestras as integral forces that shaped his sound and style.

You’re The One, his recording debut for MCA/Impulse!, achieved #1 status on both the Radio & Records NAC chart, and Contemporary Jazz chart for two months, a rare occurrence for a first recording. This recording also won a five-star rating in Downbeat magazine, and was nominated for a Grammy. Jazz Times reviewer Diane Patrick called You’re The One “A thoughtful piece of work which may well become a jazz guitar classic.” Johnson’s follow-up recordings, Future Excursions and Never Too Much, also reached the top of the charts. New Beginnings was Johnson’s debut recording for the Heads Up International jazz label. Johnson’s music has been a favorite at radio stations worldwide since the release of his very first CD, You’re the One on MCA/Impulse!, and the appeal of his music continued with the release of his second recording for Heads Up International, titled Missing You.

In addition to his solo recording projects, Johnson has found time to record with the likes of Ramsey Lewis, vocalists Joe Williams and Vanessa Ruben, and saxophonist Richie Cole among many others. He has performed with Nancy Wilson, Marlena Shaw, Angela Bofill, Dizzy Gillespie, the Boston Pops, Sonny Stitt, Freddie Hubbard, Grover Washington Jr., Stanley Turrentine, Dr. Billy Taylor, and organist Jimmy Smith, James Moody, David “Fathead” Newman, Terry Gibbs, Bobby Watson, Nicholas Payton, and many other great jazz artists.

Seeing the need to reinvent himself, Johnson recorded a CD live called An Evening At Sea from aboard the ocean liner QE2 in 1999. This recording was also well received by the jazz

world. Johnson’s most recent group has been patterned after the hard swinging jazz groups of the 60s using the instrumentation of guitar, saxophone, organ and drums. Johnson’s latest recording on A440 Music Group is called Organic and features legendary vocalist Nancy Wilson. It is this powerhouse group the Organ Express that has been exciting audiences the world over.

JOSHUA RAMOS (Bass)Joshua Ramos is a young Puerto Rican who resides in Chicago. At an early age he was surrounded by music. He grew up in a musical church where he sang and clapped his hands to a live band of friends and family. His parents both sang and his father played viola. His mother and aunts had a vocal trio and he became involved with the bass guitar at the age of 12 at the behest of his father. Ramos got into music deeply and played with rock bands and in his church band when his teacher Margaro Torres wasn’t present. He played in the Whitney Young High School Jazz Band and later joined the music program Merit Music. There his talent was nurtured and he was in the Merit Honors Jazz Band as well as Gallery Thirty Seven. In Gallery Thirty Seven, Ramos played in the Latin Big Band and worked with artists like esteemed trombone player Wayne Wallace and percussionist John Santos. After high school, he attended Northern Illinois University where he was in contact with heavyweights such as alto man Greg Ward and did regular gigs with Wynton Marsalis’ pianist Dan Nimmer. While in the Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble under the direction of jazz educator reed man Ronald Carter, Ramos shared the stage with Red Holloway, Byron Stripland, Dennis Mackrel, Donald Harrison, Conrad Herwig, Wynton Marsalis and Carl Allen, to name a few. His career continues to flourish in Chicago where he is making new contacts all the time. He has opened up for Stevie Wonder in Austria with the band Liquid Soul. He has performed with Skinny Williams opening for Stanley

a program designed to help provide scholarship opportunities to youth as they move through high school and on to college. Unfortunately, due to a health-related issue in 2008, Lewis had to suspend this program.

In 2003, Lewis along with Larry Rosen (founder and former president of GRP Records) and Lee Rosenberg formed LRSmedia, an independent music entertainment company that created and produced branded entertainment properties for distribution across broadcast, live and recorded media. LRSmedia co-produced, along with PBS television station WTTW-Chicago in April 2006, a series of 13 one-half hour television programs called Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis making it the first time in 40 years that jazz had enjoyed television coverage. The program not only featured the legends of this great music, but also the young and upcoming stars as well. Lewis along with Rosen and Rosenberg were co-executive producers of the series.

Beginning in 2005, Lewis began seriously composing large-scale musical works. The first was an eight-movement work for jazz trio and ballet in collaboration with the Joffrey Ballet and choreographed by Donald Byrd. The world premiere of “To Know Her . . .” was performed at Ravinia Festival in June 2007. The second was an eight-movement work for jazz trio and string quartet entitled “Muses and Amusements.” This world premiere with the Turtle Island Quartet was also performed at Ravinia Festival in June 2008. And the latest work was a multimedia tribute to Abraham Lincoln on the 200th anniversary of his birth. This eight-movement work entitled “Proclamation of Hope: A Symphonic Poem by Ramsey Lewis” was world premiered once again at Ravinia Festival in June 2009 and was performed again in November 2010 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. It consisted of Lewis performing with his trio and 21 other musicians on stage enhanced

with visuals on giant screens and a historical description in the program conveying what each movement represented. Scott Hall arranged the music and conducted, Michael Coakes created the visuals, Guthrie Ramsey wrote the historical descriptions and Jan Lewis was senior advisor/coordinator. In August 2010, Lewis composed yet again a multimedia work to have its premiere at Tokyo Blue Note in Tokyo, Japan. The work entitled “Colors: The Ecology of Oneness” received critical acclaim. This performance of “Colors” in Tokyo as well as the Kennedy Center performance of “Proclamation of Hope” were taped by Chicago Public Television station WTTW and “Proclamation of Hope” was broadcasted nationally in 2011.

Lewis continues to perform in the United States and abroad with his quintet: Henry Johnson on guitar, Joshua Ramos on bass, Charles Heath on drums and Tim Gant on keyboards.

HENRY JOHNSON (Guitar)The Chicago-born guitarist began playing at age 12. While spending some formative time in Memphis, he started playing gospel music at age 13. By age 14, Johnson was playing in R&B groups. Although Johnson’s parents brought him up hearing the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Joe Williams and other artists of that era, it was not until 1967 that Johnson was formally introduced to jazz by hearing guitarist Wes Montgomery. In 1969, Johnson and his family moved back to Chicago, where he developed a reputation on the south side as a good local jazz guitarist. In 1976, he went on the road with jazz organist Jack McDuff and was called to work with vocalist Donny Hathaway in 1977.

In 1979, Johnson began playing with jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis. In 1985 jazz legend Joe Williams added Johnson to his regular group. Johnson’s musical roots run deep into gospel, blues and jazz. His strongest and earliest

Canada), Blue Note (Poland), the Hot House, the Green Mill, the Back Room Chicago, the South Shore Jazz Festival and the Hyde Park Jazz Festival (showcasing his collaboration with Chicago’s tap dance prodigy Jumaane Taylor). He recorded with musicians and projects such as Zvonimir Tot’s Blue Quest with Larry Gray, Sergio Pires’ Passport Not Required with Bobby Broom, and projects also with the Ken Chaney Xperience and Roger Harris Trio. He proudly launched his fi rst independent recording project entitled “Conversations” encompassing the sound of his very own Charles Heath Quartet.

Heath has also touched the lives of many of his students as a teacher and has opened many doors to underprivileged youth. He has implemented the music program at Ruggles

Elementary School and developed a “Say No to Drugs” Drumline having the youth perform at a local annual “Say No To Drugs” parade. He’s implemented a marching band for the Alain Locke Charter School and produced a concert where he was able to raise $10,000 for the school to purchase instruments for the children. He has taught at South Shore High School, Kellar Middle School and taught private lessons for troubled African-American males at the New Direction Outreach Center. Heath is continuously breaking barriers in his career as a musician, mentor and humanit arian. He is always leading with a cutting edge approach with a passionate heart and professional class.

Jordan. Ramos has sat in the bass chair for Dave Valentin, Jimmy Bosch, Curtis Robinson, Tecora Rogers, Ken Chaney’s Awakening, CALJE (featuring Steve Turre, Paulo Mejias and Brian Lynch), Liquid Soul, Samba Mapangala (artist who made and sang the OBAMA song), We Tree, The Occidental Brothers, Ernie Adams, Willie Pickens, The NIU Jazz Ensemble, Darwin’s Evolution Group, NIU Liberace Group, Charlie Johnson Trio, Dan Nimmer and Tito Carrillo. He is a fi xture in the national music scene and a graduate of Northern Illinois University.

CHARLES HEATH (Drums)Originating from Chicago, Charles Heath is a versatile and renowned musician from local to international levels. Playing anything from jazz and blues to gospel and Latin music, his signature is prominent in the recording studios, concert settings and live Broadway theater platforms. Some of his proudest accolades include works with Donald Byrd, McCoy Tyner and Slide Hampton. He also played with the national tour of Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones’ theater production of The Color Purple. He is often rotating hats of composer, band leader, recording artist, musical director, producer and teacher and simply inspires and outreaches to his surrounding communities at all times.

Heath began his musical journey as a

drummer very early in life. It was said his mother would sit by the drums in church during the time she was expecting him, and she said, “When the drums started kicking, he started kicking, and when they stopped, he stopped.” After being born, Heath would beat on anything he could get his hands on. He took no prisoners as he destroyed spoons, forks, combs and brushes to make music. He stared grabbing attention back in his grammar school days by winning countless local talent shows and moved along to begin working professionally in Chicago by the age of 14. He then carried on to Shaw University in North Carolina, attaining a degree in Music Performance while on full scholarship. There he started his fi rst quartet, Touch of Jazz, and performed at local political events and private parties and was blessed to be featured on the WSHA radio station in Raleigh, N.C.

Upon his return to Chicago from college graduation, Heath was quick to start playing and collaborating with Chicago jazz legends such as Von Freeman, the Ken Chaney Xperience, Malachi Thompson, Robert “Baabe” Irving III, and was even a part of a documentary of the legendary Oscar Brown Jr. His talents have been showcased at renowned venues and events such as the Chicago Jazz Festival, the African Arts Festival, the Dayton Ohio Music Festival, the Chicago Jazz Showcase, Birdland (Edmonton,

The Friends of the MAC is a family of people who have decided that a world-class performing and visual arts center should reside in their community. Ticket sales only provide 42 percent of our $3 million operating budget. It is through the support of College of DuPage and through the generous gifts from patrons and local businesses that we can keep art in our gallery and on our stages.

Your gift to the MAC • Brings nationally and internationally renowned artists to our community • Supports our SchoolStage program that annually offers affordable arts experiences to thousands of school children • Provides students and community members the opportunity to interact with artists • Enhances the quality of life in our community

Without the generous support of the Friends of the MAC we would not be the cultural hub of DuPage County. We gratefully thank our friends and we invite others to join them.

For complete details, visit the MAC Ticket Offi ce or call the MAC at (630) 942-2263 or the College of DuPage Foundation at (630) 942-2466.

Arts Center and MAC-tastic Treat Seats EndowmentsDonors may choose to direct gifts to the Arts Center Endowment or the newly established MAC-tastic Treat Seats — Tickets for Kids & Families Endowment. Donations made to these MAC Endowments, our “savings accounts,” go into principal secured, invested accounts that will provide ongoing support for arts programs and arts accessibility for years to come.

The McAninch Arts Center and the College of DuPage Foundation can also provide you with information on Planned Giving opportunities.

For more information, please contact the MAC at (630) 942-2263, the College of DuPage Foundation at (630) 942-2466 or visit foundation.cod.edu.
