The morning started with a blue sky. Everyone heading to Dobbie’s Garden Centre, Stirling at around 9am for the traditional ‘fry-up, and at £4 a head, it was a real bargain. After a wee look around the 60 cars we headed off west to Crianlarich at 10am prompt, passing through Callander at 10.30am, turning right at Crianlarich and heading a further 6 miles to Tyndrum where the Green Welly staff had reserved a bit of their top car park for us. We got there at 11.20am and again had a good look around all the cars. At 12.15pm I blasted the horn to get us moving again as Kinlochleven was a good jaunt up the road. We stopped again at the top of the road overlooking Loch Tulla for photos. As usual, the 11 Capris went to the far side of the car park to take their club photos and I went on my neck coming down the hill after taking my photos. (Well, I'm not as young as I used to be). We then headed north opening the carbs wide and letting the air and fuel rush through them as we cruised through Glen Coe and across the Ballachulish Bridge and turning right to go clock wise to Kinlochleven. Once there, I found out that some of the cars had taken the faster, but not as scenic route, anticlockwise. Once parked, we all headed into the Highland Getaway Inn for lunch. I Entries for the Heritage Runs are coming in thick and fast so there is no time to spare if you want to be sure of your place at the Start. The new run to Stirling is proving to be very popular and there are a number of entries for the John O’Groats Run, including a crew from the Isle of Lewis. At the request of the participants, the John O’Groats Run will take place on Wednesday 24th January. This means that the start for them will not be so early in the day and will allow those entrants who wish to go on and take part in another Run from Paisley Abbey on 25th to be part of the festivities in the afternoon. As always space at the Start is limited so don’t delay in getting your entry in.More information, including the entry form and regulations can be found at www.monte.scot under the Heritage tab on the menu. HISTORIQUE UPDATE Published by Douglas Anderson Co-ordinator Glasgow Start and UK Leg Rallye Monte Carlo Historique Email: [email protected] Telephone: 01382 731755 We have included reports of a couple of events that took place recently, some dates for your diary and a plug for my book to help with your Christmas Shopping. In the future we will be looking for your reports, news items with limited space for one or two items for sale. Earlier in the week I heard the sad news of the passing of Bill Henderson, whose extensive photographic record of motorsport in Scotland is well known to many of us. In fact last month we featured one of his excellent images of the Rest and be Thankful in the feature on the proposed Heritage Centre at the Rest. In the next issue of Monte News and Classic Updates there will be a special tribute to Bill. At this time our thoughts and sympathy go out to William Henderson, Bill’s son, and the rest of his family and friends. Douglas Anderson (Editor) You may have noticed that we have added a few features to this issue of Monte News and Classic Updates. BBC television have commissioned a major new series on the Great North Road. Comprising 14 episodes of around 1 hour each, they will be shown at prime viewing time. The programme researchers have approached us and asked if they can feature the 2017 Rallye Monte Carlo Historique in the series. They will be filming on the day of the Start of the Rally and will follow the cars down to the A1 and on to the traditional Passage Control at the Olde Bell Inn at Barnby Moor. They are planning to interview some of the competitors and we are all very pleased to be asked to be part of this exciting venture. We will keep you updated on progress in the next Monte News and Classic Updates. Classic Updates ISSUE 3 ... PRIME TIME TV PRESS LAUNCH The new PR team – Alan Douglas and Alistair Millar – did a fantastic job sending the photos and story from the Press Launch for the 2017 Monte out to the local and national press and Social Media. Andrew Goodfellow and his co-driver and brother-in-law Derek Coghill were photographed in a variety of poses in Andrew’s Austin 7 Ulster, including going down the Town Hall Steps. Andrew and Derek have entered the Austin 7 in the 2017 Rallye Monte Carlo Classique. Andrew’s passion is for Austin 7’s and he restores and manufactures components for them. Derek is an electrical engineer by day, but races 2CV’s, sometimes for 24 hours at a stretch. They are clearly well suited to taking part in the Monte I have now received the final list of Scottish Starters from the Automobile Club de Monaco and the numbers are up on last year. There are some first timers as well as some ‘weel kent faces’ and a crew from Europe. The rally route this year is a traditional Monte route going through Dumfries, across the A66 to Scotch Corner, then onto the A1 to Barnby Moor where there is a Passage Control at 10am on the morning of the 26th January. There is also a welcome point at the Roadhouse, Lenham on the A20 near Dover in the afternoon of the 26th. If you live near any of these points, it would be great if you could come out to give the crews a send-off on their way to the Mediterranean sun, via the snowy Alps. The entries for the Classique are still open, so if you fancy the challenge and have a car between 1911 and 1980 of a type which took part in the Monte, then there is still time to get your entry in. More information including a link to the regulations, entry form and everything else you need is on our website www.monte.scot under the Classique tab on the menu. The entries are open to the end of the month. If you are thinking of entering, please let me know. I would highly recommend the Inn to anyone wanting a good lunch with a view. I headed out to check the cars, and found General Lee in the carpark looking around all the classics in his large Dodge Charger. After lunch we all headed home in dribs and drab. Some of us stopped at the lay-by overlooking the pap of Glen Coe at the side of Loch Leven for photos. The sky could not have been more blue and the sea was like a mill pond. What a view! We then headed back, taking some photos of the cars crossing the Ballachulish Bridge. Three of the cars stopped at the Kings House Hotel (Dolly Sprint, Spitfire, and the Celica). After coffee and feeding the deer, we headed home. Unknown to us Alex McDougal had snapped a crankshaft in his old Vintage Chrysler. We all had a great time and even Alex said he had a good time and the car will be back on the road in no time. The end of a perfect day. Report by June Anderson By special request, the second Jock’s Run was held on 23 October 2016. The sunny autumn day started at Bothwell Services on the A74 for signing on and coffee, followed by a tricky autotest in the car park area, before the start of the Run proper. The test generated a great deal of fun as the cars of various sizes manoeuvred their way around the cones. Special commendation should go to Janet and Brian Telfer who managed a decent time with their two dogs in the back of the MGB. The route took the participants through some beautiful countryside to Muirkirk and East Ayrshire Car Club’s Kames Sprint Circuit. A total of five autotests gave drivers the opportunity to show off their driving skills and competition was fierce. Once the tests were finished the cars joined in the route organised by the Veterans of Scottish Motorsport to their finish venue at Ballochmyle Golf Club where we all enjoyed a delicious meal. The car park at the golf club held a stunning array of around 30 classics of all eras. This was the first joint venture between the clubs and it is hoped that it will not be the last. Jock Millar graciously consented to present the awards to the winners. Stan and Deirdre Bernard in a Porsche were the Best in the Tests, closely followed by James Meggat and Scott Wright in the Paisley liveried Chrysler Sunbeam. Brian and Janet Telfer finished a very good third in their bog standard MGB. The car voted favourite by the participants was Craig and Helen McGibbon’s Volvo Amazon and the navigator’s award was scooped by Steven Inch in Keith Inch’s Humber Sceptre. A very successful end of season day out.
