POSEIDON
Poseidon was the god of the sea. He was the brother of Zeus and
Hades.
Poseidon was a son of Cronus and Rhea. In most accounts he is
swallowed by Cronus at birth but later saved, with his other brothers
and sisters, by Zeus. However in some versions of
the story, he, like his brother Zeus, did not share
the fate of his other brother and sisters who
were eaten by Cronus. He was saved by his mother
Rhea,
Poseidon was an important god in a lot of cities: in
Athens, he was second only to Athena in
importance. In Corinth and many cities of Magna
Graecia he was the most important god of the city.
The origins of the name "Poseidon" are unclear one
theory divides it into an element meaning husband or sir and another
which means land,
getting something like Mr. or husband of the Earth, which I relate to
Demeter, Earth Mother.
THE OLYMPIC GAMES
The Olympic Games began over 2,700 years ago in Olympia, in southwest
Greece. The Games were part of a religious festival, were held in honour of
Zeus, king of the gods. Were staged every four years at Olympia. People from
all over the Greek world came to watch and take part. The games inspired the
modern Olympic Games (begun in 1896).
The Olympic Games were more important than wars because they were a
religious festival.
Greeks, the first people to celebrate de OLYMPIC GAMES.

THE STATUE OF ZEUS
About 435 BC was build the great Temple of Zeus in Olympia, inside was a huge statue of
the king of the gods, sitting on a throne. The statue was covered in gold and ivory, and was
six times bigger than a man.

SPECTATORS
WOMEN AT OLYMPIA
About 50,000 people could sit in the stadium.
A greek stadium.
Important visitors and athletes had hotel rooms. It was hot and
overcrowded, and the water supply was poor, this didn't stop people
coming though!
The Games ended with a feast. Lots of oxen were roasted in a giant
barbecue.

Married women were not allowed into the Olympic Games, only men boys
and unmarried girlds were allowed to the Olympic Games.
Unmarried women had their own festival at Olympia every four years.
This was held in honour of Hera, wife of Zeus. Unmarried women could
compete in running races. Winners were awarded crowns of sacred olive
branches, the same as men.
RUN FACTS:
-
The Pankration allowed any moves, even strangling your opponent!
The Olympic Games included competitions for trumpeters.
All the competitors at the Olympic Games were naked, except for
perhaps a coating of oil.
The running track was 183 m long. The Greeks called this
measurement a stade - from which we get the word "stadium".
