1 Dear Parents and Hebronites, Greengs from Hebron! Firstly, I would like to thank you for your prayers and kind messages many of you have sent to Clare and me as we have taken on our new roles. We have really appreciated the support and encouragement that members of the community have given us. I am enjoying my new role in this truly wonderful school, where each day is filled with a great variety of interesng events and challenges. I trust that the 79 new Hebron students and their families have felt the same warm welcome into this community. As staff, we remain commied to maintaining the Chrisan ethos and high standards which Hebron has had throughout its history. We connue to emphasise the importance of the holisc nature of educaon for the whole child. To that end, we work hard at ensuring academic success, spiritual wellbeing and opportunies in extracurricular acvies that play such a prominent part in the life of Hebron School. I am delighted that all of the class 10 has agreed to parcipate in the equivalent of the DoE Bronze award, interesngly enough an award that Kurt Hahn, an educaonal pioneer, established in Moray in the North of Scotland where we have just recently been living. Our boys' football teams competed valiantly in the Interschool football tournaments but it was the girls U-15 and U-17 that went away with the winning trophies this year. Our students have also been successful, in the Interschool's cross country, winning first in the U-13 boys, 2nd in the U-19 boys and 3rd in the U-19 girls. A great team effort was made in the Inter Schools Athlecs. The girls' relay teams did parcularly well, but it was noted that we do need to work on our marching! School badminton, cricket, and basketball are among the other sports represented by Hebron in the Interschool events, a remarkable achievement from a relavely small school and a true reflecon of the dedicaon and hard work of the pupils and PE staff led by Mrs Stalin. Music connues to play a prominent role at Hebron and many of our students are preparing for their music exams next term. We are connually entertained by performances in our assemblies from ensembles, soloists and the Concert Band. We are very grateful to Mrs Jung as Head of music for all the work she has done within the department and also to Mr Jung in PE and wish them all the best in their imminent move inially back to Korea. We were also sad to see Mrs Franklyne leave aſter 17 years of service in Hebron and hope that her move to the north of India goes well. One of the many things I am grateful to Mr Oldcorn for is the smart A level uniform and the general pride the pupils have in their appearance. This year we are asking students to return, aſter the term break, in either black or dark blue rain coats/ jackets and to leave the more colourful variety at home. Congratulaons to Mr Ronalds on another successful Roald Dahl Day in Junior School, it was a pity that he could not be seen on the day and leſt the school to be run by Mr Twit’! There has been a great deal of work carried out on both the Lushington and the Selborne campuses during the summer holidays and on into this term. At Lushington and Selborne we are improving the security fences and connue to renovate staff accommodaon. We hope to raise enough money to pay for phase 1 and are determined to push through into the 2nd phase and get the pool heated for our pupils to pracce and to learn to swim in. Dear Parents and Hebronites,

Greetings from Hebron! Firstly, I would like to thank you for your prayers and kind messages many of you have sent to Clare and me as we have taken on our new roles. We have really appreciated the support and encouragement that members of the community have given us. I am enjoying my new role in this truly wonderful school, where each day is filled with a great variety of interesting events and challenges. I trust that the 79 new Hebron students and their families have felt the same warm welcome into this community.

As staff, we remain committed to maintaining the Christian ethos and high standards which Hebron has had throughout its history. We continue to emphasise the importance of the holistic nature of education for the whole child. To that end, we work hard at ensuring academic success, spiritual wellbeing and opportunities in extracurricular activities that play such a prominent part in the life of Hebron School. I am delighted that all of the class 10 has agreed to participate in the equivalent of the DoE Bronze award, interestingly enough an award that Kurt Hahn, an educational pioneer, established in Moray in the North of Scotland where we have just recently been living.

A great team effort was made in the Inter Schools Athletics. The girls' relay teams did particularly well, but it was noted that we do need to work on our marching! School badminton, cricket, and basketball are among the other sports represented by Hebron in the Interschool events, a remarkable achievement from a relatively small school and a true reflection of the dedication and hard work of the pupils and PE staff led by Mrs Stalin. Music continues to play a prominent role at Hebron and many of our students are preparing for their music exams next term. We are continually entertained by performances in our assemblies from ensembles, soloists and the Concert Band. We are very grateful to Mrs Jung as Head of music for all the work she has done within the department and also to Mr Jung in PE and wish them all the best in their imminent move initially back to Korea. We were also

sad to see Mrs Franklyne leave after 17 years of service in Hebron and hope that her move to the north of India goes well.

One of the many things I am grateful to Mr Oldcorn for is the smart A level uniform and the general pride the pupils have in their appearance. This year we are asking students to return, after the term break, in either black or dark blue rain coats/ jackets and to leave the more colourful variety at home.

Congratulations to Mr Ronalds on another successful Roald Dahl Day in Junior School, it was a pity that he could not be seen on the day and left the school to be run by ‘Mr Twit’!

There has been a great deal of work carried out on both the Lushington and the Selborne campuses during the summer holidays

and on into this term. At Lushington and Selborne we are improving the security fences and continue to renovate staff accommodation. We are excited by the prospect of the annual Drama Festival which is held on the last week of this term, 8th- 11th October, and to which all parents are warmly invited. Our Standard 7s, 9s, 11s and 13s, as well as the directors and production teams, have all worked extremely hard . Parents are very welcome to attend the festival and to be present at the school during this week. Unfortunately, due to restricted audience numbers, pupils will not be able to accompany their parents when they come to watch as all pupils have been allocated specific performance times that they attend with their class groups. If you have pupils staying with you during this week and you are coming into school to watch a play in the evening the pupils with you, not involved in the play, can be looked after in the dorm. Please let the appropriate dorm parents know of your plans in ad-vance. Our apologies for this inconvenience.

This week is a great chance for parents to get to know one another and to develop relationships and I too look forward to meeting many of you for the first time and also renewing old ac-quaintances.

Art Field Trip At 6:40 on the 20th of September, two boys stayed in the dorm despite prep having started. Being teenagers and

naturally lacking any coherent sense of punctuality, they had both decided to pack for their impending art field

trip mere minutes before departure. Once having packed however, they rushed to the Inters porch, which at this

point in time had been used more as a bus stand than anything else, and patiently waited for the girls to pick

them up. Eventually, the girls did arrive, grumbling as the boys spent ages finishing their goodbyes for a two day

trip.

The bus ride to Bangalore was overnight. Hence there shall be no account of it. For the students, they were

chucked out of the public transport onto the streets of Bangalore at five the next morning, and were under-

standably distraught. This however, had no impact on the staff, who encouraged the students to get an extensive

one hour of sleep before spending the rest of the day walking through art galleries.

After the short nap that had somehow failed to rejuvenate the students, they were driven to the Chitrakala

Parishath. Upon arrival, the students were immediately swooped into a world where incredible ideas were

expressed through colours ad not words. The ideas deliberated upon were conservative, but this in no way

detracted from the immense skill required to form each piece, a highlight being the oil and charcoal work done

by N K Baskaran, an artist who brought a sense of tranquility. After a brief chat with some of the artists, the stu-

dents got a sense of the hard work and dedication required to create the masterpieces, and all vowed to work

harder towards their coursework.

This visit was followed by a brief stop at a traditional

Kannada restaurant where everyone ate to their

fullest, with the most popular meal being the

succulent Kerela Parottas, with everyone lapping up

half a dozen of them, wisely , as they had an entire

day’s worth of travelling left to go.

The next stop was Orion Mall, or at least the Art Café

inside it. The exhibition here was titled faces, and was

a collection of modern artists who took to the theme in various different

ways. The artwork ranged from sketches to impossibly detailed portraits,

with sculptures sprinkled everywhere in between.

The National Modern Art Gallery was the next stop for the students, where

they were introduced to bold and brash ideas that challenged the long-

established and seldom-disputed principles upheld by society. Beginning the

tour with a gorgeous oil painting by none other than Raja Ravi Varma, the

standard was set remarkably high by S G Vasudev, the exhibitor whose work

dominated most of the gallery. His works marked a return to the organic painting style held by the old indian

painters that resisted western influence, and hence lacked the stylistic purity held so dear by the western classical

painters, and instead focus on cultural and religious ideals and practices of the early Indian civilization. It was here

that an interesting debate broke out among the students. At what point does art stop becoming intricate requiring

countless tireless hours of work, and a simple two minute sketch that could be drawn by a two year old, and sup-

posedly hold a deep-seated truth to existence that only the most perceptive of viewers could discover? So they

moved on to the next section, where certain works managed to give nightmares to most of its viewers, and hence

they hurried on to the next stage of the journey

This was followed by an hour or so of free time, where the students could take in the diversity of Commercial

Street, where they had satisfying lunch. Post this was an inspirational visit to UB city, where an exhibition was held

containing artworks that were painted by people using their feet and mouths. The quality of these artwork was

impeccable.

After this a final stop was made at a personal gallery where the curator imparted deep life lessons which was an

incredible message that would help the students in more ways than one. When dinner was over, the gang got

packed and were ready for the journey back to mundane life. Their time in Bangalore had borne quite a few fruits

in their minds, and it was certainly a journey that they would cherish for the rest of their Hebron lives.

SPORTS The academic year began as usual with the

Football tournament for the Boys with the Under

-17’s and Under-14’s entering the Semi Finals.

The Under 17’s were notably a superior team and

were unable to compete to their full potential

due to major injuries in their last League match.

The Under 19’s also performed better than

expected and held their own. The Under 14’s

have certainly proved that there is hope for the

future of Hebron Football.

This was followed by the badminton tournament

for the boys where the Hebron Under 17 team

made it to the Semi Finals. The Girls Badminton

team also put up a brave venture in participating

in the inter school tournament.

At the interschool Athletics Meet Hebron was

able to capture three podium finishes (table

below), with a few places in the top six positions

gaining the girls a position within the top ten

schools.

The Inter School Cross Country Team fared well

with all teams gaining the 2nd or 3rd positions in

their respective divisions and three members of

the team (table below) also gaining individual

positions.

This year Hebron also had the privilege of hosting

the Girls Inter School Football Tour-

nament and performing outstand-

ingly well, with the Under 14’s and

Under 17’s winning the tourna-

ment and the Under 19’s retaining

the runner up position. Thepnum-

sommanus Punyisa (Monet) and

Ruth Duncan also won the best

player awards for their respective

divisions.

Thank you to all the Coaches and

Teams for a Good start to the year.
