Monroe Archers Compete at State Level Tournament

Alicia Bondar (Demin & Dust), Carson Fuller (Crazy “Bout Critters) and Justin Yarger (Crazy ‘Bout Critters) all

competed in the 4-H Shooting Sports State Tournament on Aug 3. All three competed in the Target Archery

Open division and did quite well. In the Senior age group, Carson came in at 3rd place followed by Alicia at

4th. For the Junior age group, Justin came in at 2nd place. Justin also competed in an additional event that

was new this year, which consisted of 3 separate archery events, outdoor FITA, Field & Hunter and 3-D. Justin

was awarded two 2nd places and a 3rd place; and wound up in 2nd place overall for the Junior age group.

Congratulations to all three of our archers for a job well done and representing Monroe county!!

First Ever Tri-County Invitational Archery Tournament

The Monroe County Shooting Sports Association hosted the first ever Tri-County Archery tournament at the

Washtenaw Sportsman’s Club on Sunday Sept.8th. Twenty-eight 4-H archers from 11 different counties

scattered across the lower peninsula came out to compete in this one-day event. Twenty medals were hand-

ed out to the top shooters. WSC club members Dave B. and Tim O. were extremely impressed with how well

the kids performed and behaved. Another shinning example of how 4-H cultivates and grows the leaders of

tomorrow. Special thanks go out to the members of the SSA youth executive board, the shooting sports in-

structors for all their work in putting this event together and to the Washtenaw Sportsman’s club for the use

of their facilities!!

Since 1925, American Youth Foundation (AYF) conferences have helped young leaders discover their unique gifts, inspiring them to put those gifts into action to make a positive difference.

Danforth’s classic motivational book, and an invitation to join other young leaders at the National Leadership Conference. Nomination letters should include the nominees demon-stration of extraordinary character and leadership potential. Please share with the committee your knowledge about the nominee and express support for their passion of the 4-H program and leadership skills. This is your chance to give a huge shout-out to the nominee recogniz-ing their hard work and dedication to positive youth development!

23 STATEWIDE NEWS AREA

Apply now for the Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council

Providing opportunities for youth to share their voice through youth-adult partnerships is a key focus of Michigan 4-H Youth Development. In 2015, the Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council was created to do just that in a statewide setting.

The Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council brings teen leaders from across Michigan together to provide authentic youth voice in Michigan 4-H youth programs and to assist with promoting 4-H programs on a statewide level. The Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council provides a high-level leadership opportunity for older youth to learn about 4-H beyond their own experiences by talking with and learning from 4-H members across the state. Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council member Addy Battel reflects on her experience, saying, "State Youth Leadership Council has given me an opportunity to further hone my leadership skills in ways that are only possible when surrounded by peers with similar passions.” Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council members meet in person 2-3 times per year during statewide 4-H events like 4-H Exploration Days. Additionally, Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council members meet once per month by calling in or logging into an online telecommunication platform. Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council member Torey Fischer adds, “State Youth Leadership Council has been such a great experience that has not only allowed me to build my leadership, teamwork and communication skills, but has also opened doors and provided opportunities for my future that I am still discovering even as my 4-H career is coming to a close.” Applications are now available for the 2020 Michigan 4-H State Youth Leadership Council. 4-H members aged 15-19 as of Jan. 1, 2020, are encouraged to apply for a two-year seat on the council by applying online at https://bit.ly/2kVfHwO. Two recommendations are also required for each applicant, one being from the local 4-H program coordinator. The deadline to apply is Oct. 28.

National 4-H Week to be celebrated Oct. 7 - 13

For the 77th consecutive year, millions of youth, parents, volunteers and alumni across the country will celebrate National 4-H Week from October 6-12. During the 2019 National 4-H Week, Michigan 4-H is encouraging 4-H youth, volunteers, staff and supporters to get out and inspire youth to be True Leaders through hands-on doing. From empowering youth to pursue their passions to learning new skills, this October is a perfect time to make a difference for the next generation. One easy way to do this is by sharing how 4-H has inspired you or your kids on social media channels and with individuals in your community. Though every day during National 4-H Week is a great time to show your pride, Tuesday, Oct. 8, is the official 4-H Spirit Day and you’re encouraged to wear 4-H apparel to show your 4-H pride.

New Teaching

Science When

You Don’t Know

Diddly Squat

Resources

The "Teaching science when you don't know diddly squat series" aids youth in learning the process of science; asking questions and discovering answers. Through the various activities, young people try to figure things out for themselves, rather than just read an answer on the internet or in a book. In this latest activity in the series, "Why do animal poops look different?", youth experiment with why manure looks different for each animal.
