The Twentieth Century man isjustified in a noble pride in the his-

. tory of Christianity. The scholarlooks back toward "3e3us through anatmosphere rich and roseate by thecontinued influence "of the teachings"of the Master. Like a beautiful sum-mer atmosphere, Christianity hastraveled across the centuries and con-tinents. It is as if history were a gold-en stairway, •each step of which wasa century, and each century madeglorious by some achievement nameda great book, a great man, a greatevent, a great institution. Thus westep from Paul to Polycarp, and fromPolycarp to Chrysostom, and thenceto August ine, and Ambrose, and al-ways light, Justice, wisdom and loveattend the footsteps of each. Theministers of Christianity, departingfrom Asia Minor, traversing Asia,Africa and Europe, to Iceland; Green-land and the poles of the earth, suffer-ing all things, enduring all things, hoping all th ings , raising men every-where froni the ignoranc.e of idolworship to the knowledge of the' truoGod, and everywhere bringing life andimmortal i ty to l ight through the Gos-pel, have only be.cn acting In obedienceto the divine, instructions. SATURDAY. MAY 6, 1916

Town Council met on Wednesday evening, as License Committee, all members present. There were but few others there.

The several applications were read, then four written remonstrances, and a number spoke in remonstrance. A question was asked whethera licensed dealer had a legal right to sell by the hal t -pint or pint , totake away ; and the Solicitor replied tha t he could only sell liquor to bedrank on ^tlie premises. Then followed a very brisk conference, inwhich several took par t , — two or three at once, at times. Everybodyknows that these bottle sales are very common.

However, Councilman refused to make any investigation of thispoint, claiming it was libt their duty ; demanded that proof must bebrought to them of this or any other viola t ion of law. \Ve claim thatas Council has both admin i s t ra t ive and executive power (and there is noother authority in the Town), it is their duty to ascertain whether the

used JegjUly^or^thTkvv violated , — even~~to employ detectives if necessary.

The applications were referred to next meeting of Council.

Mrs. Daniel Wescoat received abox of fine fruit from California, raised on the Rallard Brothers'ranch. One ^of .the, oranges, wasWrteen-TtrcfiVs'-^^^Another grandson, Lew Henderson, sent her some immense pineapplesfrom Hawaii , at Christmas time.

.A l l of us hud supposed tha t therewas un unders tand ing between herand Carrolfon u n t i l Lorraine beganoperations. No one had known—Letty was u shy l i t t l e th ing—but wehad all felt rather sure of it. I couldimagine how she fe l t , sitt ing therealma1, could faiuy the tlioirgh4fl-h4d—den by her sweet, untroubled fcae.

It's a canyonf u l l of ferns and things. And a littlestream completes the ideal of coolness.I(:s a pretty "place. Will you come?"

I knew, without looking np. thatLorraine was listening to my lamedescription. She knew the place. I hadshown it to her. And a great old placeit was.

"Yes, I'll come," answered Letty, promptly. "Wait till I get my hat."

In a moment or so we were walkingdown the long, dusty road. She saidlittle. It wasn't much of a day for talk-ing. The heat beat down. A little colorcame into Letty's pale face. She climb-ed the hills as if she didn't mind it. Inoticed that she seemed to require no

•assistance, that she ignored my hand, stretched out protectingly, again andagain. I had had to half carry Lor-raine up that last hill. And when wereached the place she had quotedpoetry. But Letty Dayton did not. Shesat down on a wide stone, much asLorraine had done. But she did not gointo ecstasies over the place.

"It is beautiful here," she said simp-ly. I was raised in the country."

"I. too." I answered, "when I was alittle chap. And I have never lost mylove for it. It is a kinder place thanthe city, I think."

"Yes," she assented, absently."Carrolton came from the country,

too, didn't he?" I ventured, tentativelyjust to see how the beggar stood withher.

But I didn't want to be answered,_as_I wan, with a wave of name.

There is a curious ohl linden treeat Freyburgh. in Switzerland, plantedin remembrance of the Battle of Mo-rat, by'a citizen who returned safely. The battle was fought June ^2. 147G.

A standard rose tree, one thousandyears old. and said to have beenplanted by Charlemagne, is one of.rrm curiosities of the ancient city olHiUiesheim, in Hanover.

If/ is gnarled anil rugged, as be-comes its extreme age; and, in some.pjaces, the principal stem isabout as thick as a man's body. Itgrows at (Jus eastern side of the apseof the cathedral, and each year thevevnerable and venerated object putsforth new nnd thrifty shoots.

Fears were entertained for a longlinli; that, after Its l ife of a- thousandyears, the plant was losing Its vital-ity. But 11 Is apparently taking a newlease of l i f e , and there Is much re-joicing In Hlldesheim nl tho fact.
