CO is part of the global industrial gas market, with an estimated market of worth of $23B USD, and 5.7% growth expected through 2009. This new technology oers that growing market a new, cost-eective, and scalable method for producing CO without the use of heat or steam. Industry already uses several dierent methods of producing the gas, including heating carbon in the form of coke with a limited supply of oxygen; or by reacting water in the form of steam with carbon. Another method involves dehydrating methanoic (formic) acid with concentrated sulfuric acid, though this method has been limited to lab scale production. The new technology provides a cost-eective method for producing carbon monoxide by dehydrating formic acid with sulphuric acid on an industrial scale. It results in the production of food-grade CO and is scalable from small client-  based systems to large industrial installations. The method of monitoring the production and safety mechanisms results in a very safe production process. The fact that the production process uses no heat or steam also makes this an energy-ecient method in comparison with existing technologies that are currently available. Typically, 20% reduction in production costs or 40% reduction in capital outlay is possible. New developments elsewhere in the world (where ethanol is now produced by means of fermentation from CO) give early indicators that more cost- eective CO production methods will  become increasingly important.
