The vulture is one of the animals that during my lifetime has moved north to this areabecause of the climate change. I was working on the way into my land and saw a largeshadow one made on the road. Not being superstitious I enjoyed it. When looking at piece ofadjoining land I thought of buying, it or a similar flew out of the trashed shack. Iwondered if it had its nest there but it was merely using it as a toilet.

    By Willard Hoyt

People have asked how it is that one person can host so many Mensaevents. Well, its not that Ben is that actively running events all over the Mensa ofNortheastern New York region. It is that out of the kindness of his heart or failure torun fast enough Ben takes care of posting our events on social media. By far themost used and popular venue is Facebook where people post comments about thingstheyd like to do with the group or even post events themselves. R.S.V.P. areavailable and often but not always used and events without the lead time to make it tothe newsletter are posted on Facebook. We do realize that some people will not useFacebook for fundamental reasons but, alas, its an easy to use in the momentvenue. Our google calendar links to the nymensa.org website. Events are postedhere but short notice things may be missed. You can sync our google calendar toyour own calendar for reminders, etc. We also have a group on meetup.com.

So who is this Ben Kagan and why is he such asocial butterfly?

Wednesday September 25, 20138pm Lecture: A Bad Day for Dinosaurs: How an asteroid contributed to the mass extinction 65 millionyears agoWhere: miSci, formerly the Schenectady Museum 15 Nott Terrace Heights, Schenectady, NY 12308Speaker Dr. John Delano, Astrobiologist at University of Albany. A Distinguished Teaching Professor and NASA ResearcTalk at 8 pm, reception 6:30 welcoming the Dudley Observatory to miSci. Free with a suggested donation $5-10.The evolution of life on Earth has been punctuated by mass extinction events that globally wiped out large proportions of

species existing at the time of the event. While these multiple mass extinctions have not all had the same causes, the mosrecent one 65 million years ago is known to have been associated with the impact of a large asteroid (and massive releasegases associated with major, but independent, volcanic events) that dramatically affected the planets environment and ledthe extinction of ~50% of all species, including the many species of dinosaurs. The story of this colossal event has been pieced together using a large range of scientific methods and approaches. Althouwe are all familiar with the Darwinian idea survival of the fittest, abrupt mass extinction events appear to be associated witsurvival of the luckiest since Darwinian evolution does not prepare species to meet the extreme and unusual challenges. The abrupt and chaotic demise of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago made it possible for mammals to evolve into thecomplex array of species that we know today, including humans.John Delano received his Ph.D. in geochemistry at Stony Brook University, and currently holds the rank of DistinguishedTeaching Professor at the University at Albany in the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, and is jointappointed to the Department of Chemistry. In addition to being an Associate Dean at the University at Albany, he is affiliatwith the New York Center for Astrobiology, which is funded by NASAs Astrobiology Institutes program, headquartered at

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research is currently investigating the bombardment history of the Earth/Moon systemand geochemical pathways that may have led to the origin of life on Earth. Prof. Delano has served on, and chaired, numerous scientific review panels for both NASA (e.g., Discovery missions; New Frontiers missions) and the NationalScience Foundation, and provided invited testimony to a Presidential Commission in 2004 dealing with NASAs plans forfuture exploration. His research is funded by NASA.This is a free public event, family friendly, donations encouraged. Sponsored by the Dudley Observatory.Friday, Sept 277 10 pm DODGEBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
