EDITOR’S NOTE
No, you’re not imagining things. The page size in this issue of Monmouth Health & Life magazine is a little smaller than in our usual issues. We wanted to make it especially handy.
In this annual Guide issue, instead of our usual mix of articles, we present a 17-category alphabetical list of des-tinations and services in Monmouth County, from bakeries to museums to places for ice skating. You’ll want to look up your favorite establishments here. (And if we’ve missed one we should include, let us know so we can add it next year.)
Lists can be fun in themselves—years ago, a book made up of lists became a national publish-ing smash. But we’re hoping this one is a practical resource you’ll want to retain. Whether you’ve just moved to the Shore or have been living here for dec-ades, our list can be a rich source of “where to go” and “what to do” ideas. And luckily, Monmouth has it all: glorious beaches, fantastic shopping, fi ve-star cuisine, indoor and outdoor activities galore and an exciting mix of arts, culture and music.
Speaking of music, there’s more in this issue. On page 10, read about Monmouth’s fascinating history as an innovative music hub. If you’re feeling brave, turn to page 12 to check out five buildings in the county that are said to be haunted. Finally, learn fun facts on page 8 and test your knowledge by identi-fying a “mystery” Monmouth landmark, page 56.
Isn’t this a great county? Happy list-browsing!

SPIRITED SPIRITUALS The remembered anguish of the slavery years could be heard in voices fi rsthand in the 1880s, when Monmouth residents trooped to the Red Bank Opera House to hear Fisk University’s Jubilee Singers. The a cappella ensemble—which included former slaves—toured the nation performing spirituals to help the historically black Nashville, Tenn., college raise funds. One section of the group came to be managed by a white Red Bank resident named Charles Mumford.
The infl uence of this African-American music runs from the Fisk singers through “jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, doo wop and soul,” says Evelyn
Murphy, director of the Monmouth County Historical Association. At the associa-tion’s Freehold home, an exhibit tracing this history, “Spirituals to Soul: African-American Musical Heritage in Monmouth, 1880–1980,” was presented this fall. Call 732.462.1466 to learn more about the his-torical group’s programs and exhibits.
SOUSA BANNED?John Philip Sousa (1854–1932), the
composer-conductor renowned for patriotic marches such as “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” was also known for his wry wit. One time, here in Monmouth, it got him into trouble.
Starting in 1911, “the March King” often brought his band to play both in Asbury Park and in the religious camp meeting community Ocean Grove. Band members would be greeted
at the station by local bands, and schools and businesses would close to mark “Sousa Day.”
In 1926, when Prohibition hotly divided Ameri-cans, Sousa planned an Ocean Grove program that
included a humorous composition called “A Mingling of the Wets and the Drys.” It featured an imagined conversation between a drinker and a nondrinker, quoting “Tea for Two” and the tune with the line “How dry I am.” The resort’s Methodist managers were not amused.
Sousa obliged them and substituted another num-ber. So why was he never invited back anyway? The new number was an innocent ditty about a bird, but its title—“Follow the Swallow”—may have annoyed the Ocean Grovers.
Other bold-face musical names who played Ocean Grove? Enrico Caruso, Marian Anderson, Duke El-lington, Frank Sinatra and Paul Robeson.

It’s long been part of life on the Shore. (Yes, there’s Bruce, butthere’s so much more!)
When it comes to U.S. musical history, Monmouth County has had infl uence far beyond its size. A few highlights:

PRYOR COMMITMENTA singer turned politician? California had Sonny Bono, of course, but Mon-mouth lore has one of its own: Arthur
Willard Pryor (1870–1942), a trombone virtuoso and composer. The onetime Sousa band member started
his own band that debuted in Asbury Park in
1904—and also penned a num-
ber called “On Jersey Shore.” In 1933, running as a Demo-crat, he won a
three-year term on the
county’s Board of Freeholders.
A DEAL THEY COULDN’T REFUSE“Is that Granada I see—or only Asbury Park?” Yes, Jersey-born singer Frank Sinatra (1915–1998) sang that implicit putdown—in Cole Porter’s “At Long Last Love.” But actually,
ol’ Blue Eyes owed his early advancement partly to bookings in Monmouth clubs. And in the ’40s, when his popular-
ity was growing and he sought release from Tommy Dorsey’s band to pursue a solo career, rumor has it
that Willie Moretti of the Genovese crime family, who had a home in Deal, helped to persuade
Dorsey of the wisdom of agreeing. This spring, Monmouth University hosted a
symposium to honor the centennial of Sinatra’s birth. (Wish his spirit a happy 100th on Dec. 12!)
THE STONE PONYAsbury Park has hosted a number of well-known venues, some of them now no more—like the Upstage, the Student Prince and the Sunshine Inn. But it was a great day for music on Feb. 8, 1974, when the Pony opened its doors at the corner of Ocean and Second avenues. The club was a launching pad for the careers of Jon Bon Jovi, Patti Scialfa, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes—and of course Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. (Catch a Springsteen-E Street tribute-band show at the Pony Dec. 19, and the punk-rock band Bayside Dec. 22. Learn more at 732.502.0600.)
SPRINGSTEENON SPRINGWOOD“At the fancy clubs on the Shore in the 1950s and ’60s—even when African-American musicians played—black patrons weren’t welcome,” says Evelyn Murphy of the Monmouth Historical Association. “So they went ‘across the tracks’ in Asbury Park to venues on Spring-wood Avenue like the Turf Club.”
In fact, says Murphy, a 10-block stretch of Springwood (much of it destroyed by fi re in the 1970 riots) had long been a black-music mecca, with clubs like the Smile-A-While Inn. Artists who’d performed at Shore clubs would show up there late at night after their gigs. So would the occasional discerning white fan. One of those was Bruce Springsteen.
“Bruce grew out of that scene,” says Murphy.
In Dec. 1967, as this fl yer shows, The Castiles—Springsteen’s early band—opened for the better-known Broadways.
A BEGINNINGAND AN ENDINGRed Bank-born jazz pianist and composer William James “Count” Basie (1904–1984) got his start as a teenager, playing at parties and resorts in Mon-mouth. Today the former Carlton Theatre in Red Bank bears his name, showcasing current perform-ers. (See the Duprees and other doo-wop acts there on Dec. 5, or Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes on New Year’s Eve. Call 732.224.8778 for more info.)
Another New Jerseyan, soul singer and “Stand By Me” co-composer Ben E. King (1938–2015), gave his last public performance at the Basie last Dec. 18, appearing with restaurateur Tim McLoone and the musical group Holiday Express.

MONMOUTH THEGUIDE14
Mr. Webster defi nes the noun “haunt” as “a place habit-ually frequented,” but the verb has another meaning.A county that dates back before the American Revo-lution clearly has thousands of residents who are no longer drawing breath. And a few of them, to hear some folks tell it, aren’t quite fi nished paying us visits. Here are fi ve places these ghosts are said to frequent:
MONMOUTH
HAUNTSTHE SPY HOUSE: Also known as the Seabrook-Wilson Homestead, this building on Sandy Hook Bay in Middletown’s Port Monmouth section is considered by some paranormal experts “America’s most haunted house.”
During the Revolutionary War, accord-ing to legend, it was a tavern popular with British troops. Owner Thomas Seabrook, a patriot and a New Jersey militiaman, is said to have gotten the Redcoats drunk so they’d spill military secrets. That trickery supposedly inspires ghostly revenge.
The Seabrook spying tale—with plenty of others—was apparently spun by the late Gertrude Neidlinger, for many years the curator of a museum in the house. Histo-rians call her version fanciful fiction; they contend the house didn’t really become a tavern till 1910. But even they credit her with helping to save this structure from the wrecking ball. And how do we account for recent visitors who say they’ve seen apparitions in the rooms and through the windows?
BUD’S GRAVE: The story goes that an old man and his son Bud lived in a bungalow they called Hollywood on a back road in Highlands. Bud report-edly vanished one day. (Some ver-sions make him a Vietnam casualty or a car-crash victim.) Supposedly his dad was so distraught that he began to create a shrine in his honor to lure him back home—displaying dolls, statues, toys, signs and other colorful collectibles. Visitors to the site claimed to have seen a misty ap-parition hovering nearby. In the ’90s, most of the shrine was taken down, but locals kept the legend alive by bringing kooky objects to display.
In 2014, a man named Buddy Rodgers reportedly revealed himself to Weird NJ magazine as the missing son. So that settles it—uh, maybe!
MON.Guide16.haunting.2.indd 14 11/11/15 2:12 PM
S MONMOUTHHEALTHANDLIFE.COM 15
WHIPPORWILL VALLEY ROAD: Maybe no winding dirt road with 350 years of history is free from tragedies and legends, but this one in Middletown has more than its share. Take the witches said to have been burned at the stake here in the early 1700s—and the strange disease that, 10 months later, allegedly claimed the lives of the farmers who’d accused them. Or the unexplained burn-ing of an abandoned mansion here in the 1960s, a ghastly 1982 murder or the 2006 swimming-pool drowning of an elderly man in a tractor. The exploits of generations of daredevil teens have given this lane a reputation for spookiness that becomes almost self-fulfi lling. Shhhhh! Is that the cry of the whippoorwill we hear, or the warble of an ancient witch?
MARLBORO PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL: This facility in Marlboro Township opened in 1931 and operated until 1998, when it was shut down amid charges of patient abuse and spending irregularities. Several strange deaths at the hospital were investigated over the years, including that of a patient who wandered off and froze to death. A 1979 food-poisoning incident reportedly cost four patients their lives.
The combination of this troubling history and the presence of a 924-grave cem-etery across the street has understandably fi red imaginations. Local legends tell of an abandoned slaughterhouse on the property that was home to a murderous farmer who lured hapless individuals into a “death row” to butcher them. And “shadow people” are said to have been spotted in the area.
STEPHEN CRANE HOUSE: After a literary life of just 29 years, isn’t there more to say? Ask the ghost of Stephen Crane (1871–1900), author of the Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage, who lived in Asbury Park as a teen. Crane loved supernatural tales—he wrote one called “Ghosts on the Jersey Shore” for his brother Townley’s news service. Who’s to say his shade isn’t upstairs penning them still?
Built in 1878, the house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places just this August. In its post-Crane years it was a hotel—and later the home of an old woman said to have scribbled angry messages on the walls while her daughter did palm readings. Visitors report they’ve heard whispered hellos and children cry-ing. But when folks from the SyFy Channel’s Ghost Busters visited recently, all they found were “enormous paranormal dust bunnies.”

ACTIVITIESMonmouth County is known for its beaches, of course. But there are so many other things to do here that don’t involve sand! Play golf, go horse-back riding, watch drag racing, tour a winery, strap on a pair of ice skates, charter a boat for a day—there’s never a dull moment in Monmouth.

n The recent construction of two new sur-gical suites, each offering more than 700 square feet of state-of-the art operating space, has enhanced the Spine Center at Monmouth Medical Center. The Spine Center surgeons at Monmouth Medical Center are among New Jersey’s most ex-perienced, performing leading-edge and minimally invasive reconstructions and procedures designed to eliminate and re-duce spinal pain while restoring function. For more than 60 years, Monmouth Medi-cal Center has been a leader in surgical services, earning a statewide reputation for excellence in the field. Throughout its history, the hospital's highly skilled team of surgeons has quickly adopted the latest surgical innovations, and this
As the county grows, so does its own teaching hospital, Monmouth Medical Center.
TOP-QUALITY MEDICINE,CLOSE TO HOME
IN 1881, THE SPOTLIGHT OF U.S. MEDICINE WAS ON A SEASIDE cottage in Elberon right here in Monmouth County, where physicians battled to save the life of President James Garfield, victim of a would-be assassin’s bullet. Alas, that fight was lost. But a few years later, when an epidemic threatened the health of poor children in the area, local busi-nessmen rented four rooms over a Long Branch storefront in which the children could receive care. That became the genesis of Monmouth Medi-cal Center, which today is bringing that spotlight back, helping to define high-quality medicine for the nation and winning battles in health care.
Monmouth Medical Center is a 527-bed teaching hospital whose cam-pus covers 21 acres just two blocks from the Atlantic. Each year it delivers more than 5,000 babies and logs more than 19,000 admissions, 43,000 emergency-room visits and 126,000 outpatient clinic visits. While some people still associate advanced care with centers in cities like New York and Philadelphia, the doctors and other professionals at Monmouth Medi-cal Center prove every day that in many medical fields, advanced care of equivalent excellence is available right here on the Shore.
Here are just a few examples:

pioneering spirit has set the stage for bringing the most advanced minimally invasive procedures to the region. Over the past six decades, there have been incredible advances in the fi eld of surgery, and many of these accomplishments have been achieved in teaching environments such as Monmouth. That's why Mon-mouth is the leader for robotic and other minimally invasive surgeries for conditions including prostate and gy-necologic cancers, morbid obesity, severe heartburn and benign and malignant colon and kidney disease.
■ In care for newborns, the 1968 opening of its Regional Natal In-tensive Care Unit (RNICU) made Monmouth the fi rst hospital in the state—and the fi rst community hos-pital in the U.S.—to establish such a unit. Today this state-certifi ed Level III facility treats more than 550 infants each year for conditions such as pre-maturity, low birth weight and con-genital disorders, as well as providing delicate surgeries. In addition, Mon-mouth’s Eisenberg Family Center—a great place to have a baby—logged 5,000 deliveries last year, making it the most-used birth facility in Mon-mouth or Ocean counties.
■ In breast care for women, Mon-mouth’s Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center has for the second year in a row been named a recipient of the Women’s
Choice Award as one of America’s best breast centers. An innovative technique for an anesthesiology procedure called paravertebral nerve block, pioneered at Monmouth, is offering mastectomy patients long-lasting pain relief with fewer post-operative side effects compared with general anesthesia alone when used for breast surgery.
■ In cancer care, Monmouth’s state-of-the-art services have been centralized under one roof. Just last year, the hospital’s Leon Hess Cancer Center dedicated the Cheryl L. Diamond Cancer Care Pavilion, bringing state-of-the-art services together in one convenient and soothing location for an optimal
patient experience. Each year more than 48,000 patients entrust their care to the renowned Leon Hess Cancer Center’s highly qualifi ed team of specialists.
Also, Monmouth helps train the physicians of tomorrow in collabora-tion with Drexel University College of Medicine. And its Unterberg Children’s Hospital, its Pollak Mental Health Center, its David S. Zocchi Brain Tumor Center and its Altschul Medical Library offer services be-yond the level of the usual local facil-ity. But with all this, the professionals at Monmouth Medical Center con-tinue to provide the compassionate, highly personal care that character-izes good neighbors at their best.
Singer-songwriter Andy Gram-mer visited The Unterberg
Children’s Hospital last year.

A HOSPITALTHAT HELPS YOUSTAY HEALTHYInterested in protecting your good health or managing a chronic condition? Don’t think of a medi-cal center only as a place you go when you’re injured or seriously ill. Monmouth Medical Center offers many informational and outreach sessions for the community designed to help you live an active, healthy and fulfi lling life, with the good diet, exercise and preventive care you need. You can preregister for classes in the subject areas below—and more—by calling 732.923.6992 or visiting barnabashealth.org/monmouth.
AWARD-WINNING MEDICAL CARERecently Monmouth Medical Center’s top-quality services have been recognized with a number of awards and other designations. Here are three particularly meaningful ones:
■ The Joint Commission is the leading accreditor of health care organiza-tions in the U.S. In order to receive Joint Commission certifi cations, hospitals must undergo a stringent on-site review process and provide proof of outstanding patient outcomes. Every year since 2010, The Joint Commission has named Monmouth a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures for: Heart Attack, Heart Failure and Pneu-monia and Surgical Care. Additionally, Monmouth has earned Disease Specifi c Re-Certifi cations for Advanced Heart Failure, Acute Coronary Syndrome, Advance Primary Stroke, Breast Cancer, Hip Replacement and Knee Replacement. Most recently, Monmouth earned Disease Specifi c Certifi cations in Car-diac Rehabilitation and Spine Surgery.
■ The Leapfrog Group Hospi-tal Survey is the gold stan-dard for comparing hospitals’ performance on national standards of safety, quality and effi ciency. Monmouth Medical Center continually earns the highest score of “A” for safety, quality and effi ciency.
■ Monmouth remained the only hospital in the state of New Jersey—and one of just nine in the nation—desig-nated a “heart failure mentor” by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
AN OUTREACH TO THE SOUTHIn 2014, Monmouth Medical Center merged with the former Kimball Medical Center in the Ocean County community of Lakewood, and Kimball became Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus. For Ocean County residents, the merger brought access to Monmouth’s renowned specialty services, particularly in the areas of geriatrics, oncology and surgery. A Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) unit at the Southern Campus has been designed with special features to meet the needs of older patients, and in an $11 million renovation, three fl oors of the “H” (for Heritage) wing of the Southern Campus have been converted to all single rooms, which studies show help promote better care and higher levels of patient satisfaction.
Baby Care Basics: This program focuses on infant care including growth, development and safety issues. Hands-on time with infant-sized models is included. Fee-based.
Bereavement Counseling: The people at Monmouth Medical Center under-stand that grief is a process that is diffi cult to experience alone. Everyone mourns differently and at different rates.
Habits of Happy People: Find out about the new science of happiness and how it improves the quality of our lives. Discover ways to develop the new habits that help happy people maintain positive thoughts, emotions and actions.
Stress and Relaxation: Feeling stressed? Monmouth Medical Center offers ongoing programs that explore the causes of stress, the impact that it can have on your health and ways to combat it with practical and proven relaxation techniques.
Diabetes Self-Management Educa-tion: Four-session diabetes education program focuses on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. The program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietician/certified diabetes educator. Fee-based.
At a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, the ACE (Acute Care for the Elderly) unitat Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, was formally dedicated.

SHOPPINGWhether you’re picking up a carton of eggs or assembling a whole new outfit, Monmouth County is a wonderland of shopping possibilities. There are malls, premium outlets, flea markets, health-food stores and supermarkets of every description. We don’t want to encourage unwarranted splurging, but isn’t it nice to know there’s such a wealth of emporiums close at hand? And remember: There’s no sales tax on clothing or shoes in New Jersey. Enjoy!
