Welcome Message

This is such an exciting time for families, yet also very daunting, sending your child to Nursery. Inside this pack is all the information that we think you will need to ensure that your child has a happy start to school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask someone in the team; we are here to ensure the best start to school for your child.

Our strength, as a school, lies in our ethos which is based on the school’s golden rule, “treat others as you would like to be treated yourself”. Children’s behaviour and manners, concerning respect for others, is outstanding. We aim for all of our children to be good citizens when they leave school, understanding their place in the wider community.

Bringing and CollectingChildren must be brought and collected by an adult; this is a person over 14 years of age. It is imperative that you let us know if someone different is collecting your child as we have a responsibility to return the child to the person who brought them to school.

Settling In

Home visits take place during July. This provides an opportunity for you to speak confidentially and for your child to meet both their teacher and the Nursery

Nurse prior to starting Nursery.

Please see your personal letter for your child’s starting date and times. Please bring your child’s full Birth

Certificate with you on their first day.

What should my child wear?

Optional navy blue sweatshirts with an Early Years logo can be bought from the Nursery. Please do not send your child to Nursery in ”best”. If children really are to benefit from the learning activities that are available at Nursery, it is inevitable that sometimes they will get paint, sand and water, etc. on their clothes even though we provide aprons.

It is important to choose shoes that enable both girls and boys to participate in every activity, including climbing, running and riding bicycles.

Please ensure your child has a full change of clothes in a named plimsoll bag to remain on their peg throughout each term.

To make children easily identifiable to staff please note the following:

Red A and Red B children should wear red polo shirtsBlue AM and Blue PM children should wear blue polo shirts

Jewellery can be dangerous. Earrings can tear ears, chains can strangle and rings may get lost. We cannot be responsible for safe-keeping. For safety reasons, we ask you not to send your child wearing jewellery.

Please ensure that coats and the “Nursery” sweatshirts are clearly named.

“ “Experience has shown us that time taken to settle a child in school is time well spent. We will liaise with each parent about each individual child’s needs.

What will my child be doing in Nursery?

Well-planned play is paramount in the Early Years. Children need to encounter a wealth of first hand experiences, which will enhance and develop their understanding of the world.

How’s the curriculum planned? Croydon has strict guidelines to follow outlined in the national document “Curriculum guidance for the foundation stage” issued by the DfE. The areas of learning are:

1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development

2. Communication and Language

3. Mathematics

4. Literacy

5. Physical Development

6. Understanding of the World

7. Expressive Arts and Design

Each area is divided into early learning goals with stepping stones outlining a sequential path for the children to follow to attain these goals.

RecordkeepingDuring your child’s time at Nursery, detailed observations will be made, dated samples of work kept, including photographic evidence. These will go towards building a complete picture of your child’s development and achievement. This will be shared with you during your child’s year at Nursery.
