Voice Quality Recap

• Understand the important factors that determine end user Voice Quality experiences

• Utilize Lync Server 2010 support for network layer voice traffic management

• Recognize the Lync Server 2010 improvements for Voice Quality performance and end user experiences

• Know how to monitor and diagnose Voice Quality issues

The Lync Server Databases• Front-End Lync Server role require SQL:

• Standard Edition ships with, installs, and uses Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Edition (64-bit)

• Enterprise Edition is supported with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 or 2005 SP3 (64-bit) on a dedicated server. As of April 20, 2011 support was added for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2.

• The 32-bit versions of SQL are not supported

The Lync Server Databases … • Content Management Store (CMS)

• Xds• Pool Configuration Store

• Rtc• Rtcdyn• Rtcab1

• Application Store• Cpsdyn• Rgsdyn• Rgsconfig

• Archiving and Monitoring Store• LcsLog• LcsCdr• QoEMetrics

• Location Store

Monitoring Server

• Monitoring Server captures both call detail record (CDR) and Monitoring Server data, which incorporates file transfer, application sharing, and remote assistance

• Instant Messaging archiving is solely covered in Archiving Server

7

Monitoring Server Overview

• Works with both Standard Edition or Enterprise Edition Pool (any supported topology)

• Requires SQL client tools on Monitoring server, if SQL database is on another server

• Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager (SCOM) infrastructure is desirable

• SQL Server reporting Services (for detailed reports)

Step 2. Install Monitoring Server Role

Step 3. Deploy Monitor Server Reports

Quality Monitoring and Reports

46

A/V Quality metrics reports• Quality reports collected at the end of each call• From Lync 2010, IP Phone, A/V Conferencing Server, Mediation Server, Attendant

Console• Reports aggregated and stored into DB

Instrumentation and Alerting• Statistical based performance counters for Network factors• Grouped by Location, A/V Conferencing Server, and Mediation Server.

A Location is one or more subnets• Instrumentation is consumed by SCOM Pack for alerting

Monitoring Scenarios (1 of 2)

• Users• Tier 1: Help desk• Tier 2: NOC• Tier 3: Network Engineering

• Near Real Time Monitoring• Alerts when VoIP quality degrades• Health Model provides an overall view• View a user’s quality history at any time• Proactively identify worst performing endpoints• Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager

(SCOM) Pack

Monitoring Scenarios (2 of 2)

• Quality of Experience Validation• Verify media quality at each stage of your

rollout• Use Mean Opinion Score (MOS) to set up

Monitoring Server-based Service Level Agreements (SLAs)

• Identify the Monitoring Server levels by location

• VoIP Planning• Right provision your network for the

Monitoring Server• Watch out for Monitoring Server hotspots• Identify Monitoring Server trends 48
