Movie: BEL CANTOBased on Ann Patchett’s best-selling novel. A famous soprano (Julianne Moore, singing voice: Renée Fleming) travels to a military dictatorship in South America to give a private concert at a party for a wealthy industrialist (Ken Watanabe). Just as the glittering gathering convenes, the mansion is taken over by a guerrilla rebel group demanding the release of their impris-oned comrades. A tense negotiation begins, and a month long standoff en-sues. While they are confined to the house, the hostages and their captors, who speak different languages, are forced to find ways to communicate. Music, especially the beautiful arias performed by Moore’s character, sparks a shared sense of comradeship and even love. 2018. 1h42m.

Movie: DAMSELSamuel (Robert Pattinson), an affluent pioneer, ventures across the American Frontier to marry the love of his life, Penelope (Mia Wasikowska). As Samuel traverses the Wild West with a drunkard and a miniature horse, their once-simple journey grows treacherous, blurring the lines between hero, villain, and damsel. A loving reinvention of the western genre from the Zellner brothers (Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter), Damsel showcases their trademark unpredictability, off-kilter sense of humor, and unique brand of humanism. 2018. 1h53m.

Movie: FIVE SEASONS: THE GARDENS OF PIET OUDOLFRevolutionary landscape designer Piet Oudolf is known for designing public works like New York City’s popular High Line and the Lurie Garden in Chi-cago’s Millennium Park, both of which redefine our conception of gardens as works of art in themselves. This gorgeous, meditative documentary immerses viewers in his work, taking us inside Oudolf’s creative process. From his aesthetic theories to his strikingly abstract sketches to the ecologi-cal implications of his ideas, the film poetically reveals how Oudolf upends conventional notions of nature, public space, and, ultimately, beauty itself. In English and Dutch with subtitles. 2018. 1h15m.

Movie: GRAY HOUSEA silent fisherman in Texas, a blazing oil field in North Dakota, a mysteri-ous community in Virginia, a women’s prison in Oregon, and a modernist home in California are the ostensible subjects of Austin Lynch and Matthew Booth’s new feature, Gray House. These explorations of sound, image, and cinematic time seamlessly blend documentary and narrative form, meditat-ing upon nature, isolation, decadence, and destitution. Mysterious and elusive, yet possessing an aesthetic and sensory unity, Gray House quietly recalibrates one’s sense of the world and our place within it. 2017. 1h15m.

Movie: I AM NOT A WITCHWhen eight-year-old Shula turns up unannounced in a Zambian village, the locals are suspicious. A minor incident escalates to a full-blown witch trial, where she is found guilty and sentenced to life on a state-run witch camp. As the days pass, Shula begins to settle into her new community, but a threat looms on the horizon. Soon she is forced to make a difficult decision – whether to resign herself to life on the camp, or take a risk for freedom. In English, Bemba, Nyanja, and Tonga with subtitles. 2017. 1h33m.

Movie: JOHN MCENROE: IN THE REALM OF PERFECTIONRevisits the rich bounty of 16-mm-shot footage of tennis star John McEnroe, at the time the world’s top-ranked player, as he competes in the French

Special Movie: A BREAD FACTORY – Parts One & TwoMonday, 9/3: Double Feature / Q&A with Filmmaker Patrick WangInspired by and filmed at TSL and in Hudson! See it before it premieres in NYC and LA. From writer-director Patrick Wang (In the Family, The Grief of Others). After 40 years of running their community arts center, The Bread Factory, Dorothea (Tyne Daley) and Greta (Elizabeth Henry) are suddenly fighting for survival when a celebrity couple – performance artists from China – come to Checkford and build an enormous complex down the street catapulting big changes in their small town. Told in two films: Part One: For the Sake of Gold. Part Two: Walk With Me a While. 2018. 2h2m / 2h.

Special Event: SBK SOCIAL JUSTICE CENTERSaturday, September 22, 6pm: Sixth Annivesary Dinner & CelebrationFor information call 518-291-9415 or visit sbksocialjustice.org.

Movie: AFTER AUSCHWITZAfter Auschwitz is a “Post-Holocaust” documentary that follows six extraordi-nary women, capturing what it means to move from tragedy and trauma to-wards life. These women all moved to Los Angeles, married, raised children, and became Americans, but they never truly found a place to call home. What makes the story so much more fascinating is how these women saw, interpreted, and interacted with the changing face of America in the second half of the 20th century. By documenting their struggles for survival, the film presents a searing connection to the current political situation and points to humanity’s vital role in greater understanding and compassion. These powerful women serve as guides on an unbelievable journey, sometimes celebratory, sometimes heart breaking but always inspiring. 2017. 1h22m.

Movie: ANTONIO LOPEZ 1970: SEX FASHION & DISCOA documentary time capsule concerning Paris and New York between 1969 and 1973, viewed through the eyes of Antonio Lopez (1943-1987), the domi-nant fashion illustrator of the time, and told through the lives of his colorful and sometimes outrageous milieu. A native of Puerto Rico and raised in the Bronx, Antonio was a seductive arbiter of style and glamour who, beginning in the 1960s, brought elements of the urban street and ethnicity to bear on a postwar fashion world desperate for change and diversity. Counted among Antonio’s discoveries – muses of the period – were unusual beauties such as Cathee Dahmen, Grace Jones, Pat Cleveland, Tina Chow, Jessica Lange, Jerry Hall, and Warhol Superstars Donna Jordan, Jane Forth, and Patti D’Arbanville, among others. 2018. 1h35m.

Movie: BAD REPUTATIONJoan Jett became famous from the number-one hit “I Love Rock n Roll,” but that’s only part of the story. Jett put in hard work long before the fame, ripping it up onstage as the backbone of the hard-rock legends The Run-aways, starting her record label out of the trunk of a car after being rejected by 23 labels, and influencing many musicians – both her cohort of punk rockers and generations of younger bands – with her no-bullshit style. Jett and her close friends tell you how it really was in the burgeoning ’70s punk scene and the difficult road to rock stardom decades on. Their interviews are laced with amazing archival footage. The theme is clear: Even though people tried to define Jett, she never compromised. She will kick your ass, and you’ll love her all the more for it. 2018. 1h35m.

Open in 1984. Close-ups and slow motion sequences of McEnroe compet-ing, as well as instances of his notorious temper tantrums, highlight a “man who played on the edge of his senses.” Far from a traditional documentary, the film probes the archival film to unpack both McEnroe’s attention to the sport and the footage itself, creating a lively and immersive look at a driven athlete, a study on the sport of tennis and the human body and movement, and, finally, how these all intersect with cinema itself. 2018. 1h35m.

Movie: LOVE, GILDAIn her own words, comedien Gilda Radner reflects on her life and career, including her time as an original cast member of Saturday Night Live and her marriage to Gene Wilder. Weaving together her recently discovered audiotapes, interviews with friends (Chevy Chase, Lorne Michaels, Laraine Newman, Paul Shaffer, and Martin Short), rare home movies, and diaries read by modern-day comedians inspired by Gilda (Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Cecily Strong), Love, Gilda opens up a unique window into the honest and whimsical world of a beloved performer whose greatest role was sharing her story. 2018. 1h26m.

Movie: MADELINE’S MADELINEMadeline got the part! She’s going to play the lead in a theater piece! Except the lead wears sweatpants like Madeline’s. And has a cat like Madeline’s. And is holding a steaming hot iron next to her mother’s face – like Madeline is. Madeline (newcomer Helena Howard) has become an integral part of a prestigious physical theater troupe. When the workshop’s ambitious director (Molly Parker) pushes the teenager to weave her rich interior world and troubled history with her mother (Miranda July) into their collective art, the lines between performance and reality begin to blur. The resulting battle between imagination and appropriation rips out of the rehearsal space and through all three women’s lives. 2018. 1h34m.

Movie: NICO, 1988A tour de force performance from Trine Dyrholm’s as the aging Nico, the famed singer-songwriter, as she approaches 50. Leading a solitary existence, Nico’s life and career are on the ropes, a far cry from her glamor-ous days as a Warhol superstar and celebrated vocalist for The Velvet Underground. Nico’s new manager convinces her to hit the road again and tour Europe to promote her latest album. Struggling with the consequences of a muddled life, she longs to rebuild a relationship with the son Ari she lost custody of long ago. A brave and uncompromising musician, Nico is the story of an artist, a mother, and the woman behind the icon. In English, German, and Czech with subtitles. 2018. 1h33m.

Movie: THE CAKEMAKER [encore screening]Thomas, a young German baker, is having an affair with Oren, an Israeli married man who has frequent business visits in Berlin. When Oren dies in a car crash in Israel, Thomas travels to Jerusalem seeking answers regard-ing his death. Under a secret identity, Thomas infiltrates into the life of Anat, his lover’s newly widowed wife. The encounter with the unfamiliar reality will make Thomas involved in Anat’s life in a way far beyond his anticipa-tion, and to protect the truth he will stretch his lie to a point of no return. In English, Hebrew, and German with subtitles. 2017. 1h45m.

Movie: THE MAGIC FLUTE [1975]Celebrating Ingmar Bergman’s 100th birthday: Bergman puts his indelible stamp on Mozart’s exquisite opera in this sublime rendering of one of the

composer’s best-loved works: a celebration of love, forgiveness, and the brotherhood of man. The Magic Flute (Trollflöjten) stars Josef Köstlinger as Tamino, the young man determined to rescue a beautiful princess from the clutches of parental evil. In Swedish with subtitles. 1975. 2h25m.

Movie: RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: CODARyuichi Sakamoto has had a prolific career spanning over four decades, from techno-pop stardom to Oscar-winning film composer. The evolution of his music has coincided with his life journeys. Following Fukushima, Sakamoto became an iconic figure in Japan’s social movement against nuclear power. As Sakamoto returns to music following cancer, his haunting awareness of life crisis leads to a resounding new masterpiece. Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda is an intimate portrait of both the artist and the man. In English and Japanese with subtitles. 2017. 1h42m.

Movie: WHITNEYWhitney Houston broke more music industry records than any other female singer in history. With over 200 million album sales worldwide, she was the only artist to chart seven consecutive U.S. No. 1 singles. Her brilliant career gave way to erratic behavior, scandals, and death at age 48. The documen-tary is an intimate, unflinching portrait of Houston and her family that probes beyond familiar tabloid headlines and sheds new light on the spellbinding trajectory of Houston’s life. The film uses never-before-seen archival foot-age, exclusive demo recordings, rare performances, audio archives, and original interviews with the people who knew her best. 2018. 2h.

National Theatre Live: JULIEVanessa Kirby (The Crown, NT Live: A Streetcar Named Desire) and Eric Kofi Abrefa (The Amen Corner) feature in the cast of this new production, di-rected by Carrie Cracknell (NT Live: The Deep Blue Sea) and broadcast live from the National Theatre. Wild and newly single, Julie throws a late night party. In the kitchen, Jean and Kristina clean up as the celebration heaves above them. Crossing the threshold, Julie initiates a power game with Jean that rapidly descends into a savage fight for survival. This new version of August Strindberg’s play Miss Julie, written by Polly Stenham, remains shocking and fiercely relevant in its new setting of contemporary London. Tickets $18 members / $15 students / $20 general. 2h / 1 intermission.

National Theatre Live: Shakespeare’s KING LEAR“Ian McKellen reigns supreme in this triumphant production” (The Daily Telegraph). See McKellen’s extraordinarily moving portrayal of King Lear broadcast live from London’s West End. Jonathan Munby directs this contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving, and shocking play. Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear sees two ageing fathers – one a King, one his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of piti-less ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends. Tickets $18 members / $15 students / $20 general.1 intermission.
