RAY MATTER—The Rays are 1-2 on the 10-game homestand after dropping yesterday’s rubber match to Boston, 2-0 in 13 innings…yesterday the Orioles caught the Rays in the AL East standings (tied for 3rd), the first time in more than two weeks they haven’t held sole pos-session of third place…the Rays, Orioles and Red Sox are separated by only one game for 3rd, 4th and 5th place in the AL East.

Ê The Rays need to go 13-7 or better in their 20 remaining games to record their 7th winning season out of 8 in the Rays era (since 2008).

Ê This homestand began a stretch of 17 straight games against AL East competition…starting with the homestand, 20 of their last 23 games are within the division…Sep 29–Oct 1 vs. MIA is the lone exception.

Ê The Rays began this season 15-4 when recording 10-plus hits (through June 19) but are 12-18 since then…their 27-22 (.551) mark overall when recording 10-plus hits is worst in the majors.

UGLY IN EXTRAS—Yesterday the Red Sox handed the Rays a 2-0 loss in 13 innings here…it was the 11th consecutive extra-inning loss for the Rays, extending the club record and the majors’ longest since Houston dropped 11 straight extra-inning games in 2012…according to the Elias Sports Bureau, only twice in major league history has a team endured a longer losing streak in extras: the Montreal Expos (13) in 1969-70, and the St. Louis Cardinals (13) in 1906-07…the Rays dropped to a major-league-worst 2-13 in extras.

Ê Since the All-Star break, the Rays have failed to score a run in extras in 7 extra-inning games (spanning 15 turns at bat)…last time they scored in extras was July 3 at NYY, when they scored twice in the top of the 12th (RBI singles by Kevin Kiermaier and Rene Rivera) but yielded 4 runs in the bottom half to lose, 7-5.
