DISCUSSION ZONE

Barbara the whole story & debateModerator: Maryann Hardy, Congress President, UKRCSpeaker: Dame Eileen Sills DBE, Chief Nurse & Director of Patient Experience, Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS TrustBarbara’s Story is a dementia training film that has changed attitudes around the world. The brainchild of Dame Eileen Sills, this session gives you the opportunity to watch the film engage with Eileen about the content, next steps and what it might mean to healthcare workers. Barbara’s Story follows a fictional patient who has symptoms of dementia, and explores the challenges she faces when she comes into contact with NHS staff at home and in hospital. Barbara’s Story made a big impression on Annette Jones, a radiographer who specialises in fetal heart scanning at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. Annette says: “My 92-year-old mother has dementia. The film was incredibly moving for me. Taking my mother into our local hospital was a really traumatic experience. We all have a lot to learn about dementia”.
