AWARD OF MERIT

Th e Award of Merit recognizes outstanding contributions to the Toronto Catholic District School Board and to Catholic education.

THE TOM LEON FAMILY: In establishing the Tom Leon Bursary Award, Tom Leon’s intention was to make a contribution to help close the fi nancial gap that is an impediment to many students achieving their dreams of a higher education. Tom Leon’s example has set in motion a continuation of this contribution by members of his family. Today, the family continues to support Catholic values and post-secondary education. With this intention, many recipients have the opportunity to meet their goals and receive a post-secondary degree making a diff erence in their families and communities.Connie Leon and the families of Tom Leon are committed to support these common values.

ALUMNI AWARDSTh e Alumni Award is presented to persons, from diverse areas of careers and

endeavours, who were students in a Toronto Catholic District School Board school, who are still active in the Catholic community and who have distinguished themselves

in their careers or accomplishments.

KRISTEN FACCIOL: graduate of Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School and the University of Toronto, Kristen is a successful Aerospace Engineer. Currently working as a Canadian space roboticist Kristen was the 14th Canadian to earn a CSA/NASA robotics fl ight controller certifi cation. A strong advocate for Women in STEM fi elds Kristen continues to give back to others using her skills, including in our Toronto Catholic community.

PETER FLAGLER: graduate of Michael Power/St. Joseph Catholic High School, Pete has always been actively involved in his community - whether at school, Mass, camp or helping out with a local fundraiser. Currently the Toronto Marlies’ Assistant Equipment Manager, at work Pete is known by everyone for his hard work, encouraging compliments and positive attitude. A discerning believer formed in the Catholic faith community, Pete is an excellent role model of the virtues that TCDSB stands for.

P.C. PETER DE QUINTAL: graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic Academy,Offi cer De Quintal has served the community of Toronto for the past 13years as a member of the Toronto Police Department. At the TCDSB, hehas served as a School Resource Offi cer for secondary schools, in additionto being liasion offi cer for several elementary schools.Offi cer De Quintal goes above and beyond to provide exceptional student experiences and connect with youth. His Bike Rodeos, Toronto Helmet Initiative, Star Wars Breakfasts, and Teens Learn to Drive programs are just a few of the initiatives he has started in order to provide students across the City with experiential learning. Offi cer De Quintal has distinguished himself in the community through his impactful work, and is a true example of our Catholic School Graduate Expectations.

ASHIF JAFFER AWARDSfor Excellence in Special Education Support

Th is award recognizes Toronto Catholic District School Board teachers, education assistants, peer tutor/helpers or volunteers who have demonstrated excellence in the

support of Special Education.

JOANNE FERRER, St. Monica Catholic School: For her innovative and inspiring work to foster students with special needs in achieving and sustaining personal success, and going above and beyond to accommodate the diverse learning styles and needs of her students.

MARCELLA PORRETTA, Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School: For being a passionate and dedicated Eduational Assistant, mentoring her students and colleagues in the inclusion and support of special needs students, going above and beyond coordinating charitable events and activities for her school community, and working collaboratively with parents.

KATHERINE MALOWANY, Holy Angels Catholic School: For being a compassionate individual who promotes and lives Catholic Virtues daily, a student leader, and a positive role model who is constantly creating ways to promote the spread of random acts of kindness among her peers.

SISTER EVANNE HUNTER AWARD for Young Women in Leadership

Made annually to two exceptional female students of the Toronto Catholic District School Board in their graduating year (one grade 8 student and one grade 12 student)

in recognition of their leadership qualities and involvement in social justice eff orts in their school and community.

EMILY KARAGOSSIAN, St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School: For her leadership in a number of school-wide humanitarian projects, including an October Food Drive and Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week; Emily is a role model to fellow classmates, a mentor for younger students, and a caring community member.

ADAEZE MBALAJA, Madonna Catholic Secondary School: For her positive spirit and dedication to supporting and advocating for her peers; being a role model for her peers who leads with kindness, compassion, positivity, and integrity in all that she does. As president of Club Council, Adaeze has worked with her team to foster a sense of community at her school, and to enhance student support and experience.
