BUNTING UP AGAIN Godolphin=s G1 1000 Guineas victress Blue Bunting (Dynaformer) was nabbed on the line for third in last month=s G1 Epsom Oaks, earning Frankie Dettori a hefty ban for dropping his hands, but the jockey made no mistake in the G1 Darley Irish Oaks at The Curragh yesterday, and the filly emulated her Newmarket swoop to bag a second Classic win. Epsom victress Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) held every chance at the two pole and kept on resolutely to finish a close-up fifth. AIt was a bit of a mess at Epsom, but I came here with every chance and genuinely thought we could win,@ insisted Dettori. TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 7/18/11 • PAGE 2 of 8 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

Blue Bunting opened her career with a second tosubsequent G3 Prestige S. victress Theyskens= Theory(Bernardini) going seven furlongs in a July-coursemaiden at Newmarket July 31, and went one bettergoing an extra panel at Doncaster two weeks later.Juvenile stamina was presented as evidence again withsuccess in the Oct. 30 Listed Montrose Fillies= S. atNewmarket=s other track in her campaign closer Oct. 30, and she tasted Classic glory with a late surgealong the rail in the G1 1000 Guineas back atheadquarters on seasonal return May 1. Frankie Dettoriwas guilty of complacency in the June 3 G1 EpsomOaks next time, having eased Blue Bunting prematurelyand losing third on the line behind Dancing Rain (Ire)(Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and Wonder of Wonders. Thattransgression earned the jockey a 10-day holiday, buthe made no mistake this time and gained some measureof redemption with a last-gasp triumph. The eventualwinner was settled double-digit lengths off the clearleaders Amazing Beauty (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) andHurricane Havoc (Ire) (Hurricane Run {Ire}), whocombined to carve out testing fractions. Godolphinsecond choice Rumh (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) provided abridge to the remainder in third. Easing his mount closerwith a half-mile remaining, Dettori crouched lower onthe home turn as the tempo neared maximum. However, Blue Bunting looked held when fifth insidethe final quarter mile, just as the new leader Banimpirecame under the full force of Kevin Manning=spersuasion to contain Wonder of Wonders.

But Blue Bunting was angled outside at the furlongmarker and powered home wide and late--with Dettoriat the limit--to wrest victory from Banimpire on the line.AThe pace was solid, the fivegood ones were all togetherturning for home, and the bestfilly won,@ the rider said. AI gotmyself a bit stuck two [furlongs]out as she wasn=t going forwardfor me. As a last resort, Idecided to switch her to theoutside, and that won me therace. I was really strugglingwhen I was stuck behind theother horses, but once she sawa bit of daylight, she wentforward.@ Celebrating a secondEuropean Classic, trainerMahmood Al Zarooni toldirishracing.com, AFrankie gaveher a brilliant ride, the nice pace helped and thepacemaker did a good job. I=m delighted for my teamwhich did so well to prepare her for today. I wasn=t thatconfident before the race as I thought every horse hada chance. We have no certain plans for her now, butshe may go for the Yorkshire Oaks next.@ Blue Bunting was bred in Kentucky by Brad Kelley, aformer partner in the now-defunct Hurricane Hall. BenWalden, another partner, purchased her dam, Miarixa,in foal to Gulch, for Kelley for $220,000 at the 2006Keeneland November Sale. Kelley acquired the mare tobreed to English Channel, one of Hurricane Hall=soriginal stallions and now on Lane=s End=s roster. Kelleyis a shareholder in English Channel, and Blue Buntinghas a year-younger half-sister by the son of SmartStrike who sold to Fleetwood Bloodstock for $110,000at September last year. Miarixa has a yearling filly byEnglish Channel and foaled a colt by him this spring.Cont. p3

Banimpire So Close... Jim Bolger trainee Banimpire (Ire) (Holy RomanEmperor {Ire}), Gaelic for empress, has made relentlessprogress towards the top during a busy sophomorecampaign, but failed by a whisker to justify hername-tag and reach the pinnacle of her generation.Looking set fair for victory after gamely fighting offWonder of Wonders, she succumbed to another of BlueBunting=s late surges and was usurped on the line.Banimpire has proved tenacious throughout aseven-race season before this Classic, garnering fivewins in black-type company, including the G3 BallysaxS., the G3 Blue Wind S., the G3 Noblesse S. and theG2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal Ascot last month. AIt wasvery close at the finish,@ stated Bolger. AThe groundmaybe didn=t help her, but she has run a good racenonetheless.@
