Read the Passage
The ConstitutionThe Constitution gives the states the power to conduct elections and to make their own rules
about how they do it, and it also tells them what they are not allowed to do in conducting elections.
For example, states are not allowed to reject people who have the right to vote in an election.
The Constitution says that to be allowed to vote, a person must be a citizen of the United States. You
are a U.S. citizen automatically if you are born in the United States. There are also ways to become a
U.S. citizen if you were not born there. One of the ways is a process called “naturalization.”
Not all citizens are allowed to vote. For example, a ten-year-old may not vote. For much of
early U.S. history mostly white men who were at least 21 years old had the right to vote. Other
groups, such as women, were not allowed to vote.
Since then, the rules about who has the right to vote for president and other elected officials
have changed, with more groups of American citizens being given this right. These changes were the
result of additions, or “amendments,” to the Constitution. Twenty-seven amendments have been
added to the Constitution, and three of them have to do with who has the right to vote. These three
Amendments prohibit the states from denying the right to vote to some groups of citizens. These
three groups are African Americans, women, and people who are 18 to 20 years old. Over time, each
of these groups was given the right to vote.

Chad was never serious. He was always joking around. Some people even called him the class clown.
What does the idiom, class clown, mean?
a. A school’s mascot.
b. Someone who tries to get attention by being funny
c. Someone who likes to wear face paint to school.
d. Someone who wears funny hats.
•Which answer is THE BEST answer? Why?•Which answer is ALMOST CORRECT? Why is it not the best?•Which two answers are wrong? Reword the question to make the answer correct.
ELD 9 NTK: "The Class Clown”
Periods when you were in-between
Sean had recently graduated college. That period of life was finished but he
didn’t know what to do next. He was between college and career, between
decision and indecision. The story takes place during summer, a notoriously
unstructured period for kids. Each day heads in no particular direction, full of
freedom and possibility, that is just as likely to lead to boredom as to excitement.
The contrast between freedom and lack of direction pervades “Head Clown,”
conveying a not-knowing that cries out for resolution.
Writing PromptWhat periods in your life when you were “in between?” Like Head Clown,
consider your summers, as well as the period before you settled into routine
adulthood, or any other period when you felt an absence of direction. Search
within those periods for the makings of a story.

Gabriel: Do you know that before the Women's SuffrageMovement, and the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, women were not initially permitted to stand for elections?Jesus: Yes, we learned about it in our ESL class last year, and we also learned that even before 1920, some individual states had passed legislation that allowed women to vote in different types of elections, and some allowed women owned property to vote.
I think," Women's Suffrage" means__________A. is one of the rights for women to be treated equally as men.B. is the right for women to vote in elections.C. is the right for women to get equal education.D. is the right for women to suffer forever.
NTK: "Women's Suffrage"
In 1869, women leaders Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton formed the National Women's Suffrage Association. The main goal of this group was to get an amendment passed that would allow women to vote. In 1894, two more groups merged under the leadership of Susan B. Anthony and became the National American Woman Suffrage Association. The two groups disagreed on whether to support the 15th amendment without the right for women to vote because the 15th amendment passed in 1870 allowing all men regardless of race to vote, but not women. Their main goal was to get the 19th amendment passed to allow women to vote, and on August 26, 1920 the 19th Amendment was signed into law. It stated that the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Respond to the writing prompt below:
• If you were undecided in 1915 about the question of women's suffrage, do you think you could be persuaded by this woman to support suffrage? Why or why not?

The story that Franklin proposed the turkey as the national
symbol began to circulate in American newspapers around the time
of the country’s centennial and are based on a January 26, 1784,
letter in which he panned the eagle and extolled the virtues of the
gobbler to his daughter, Sarah. In doing so, though, he was not
delivering a critique of the Great Seal but a new medal issued by
the Society of the Cincinnati, an association of Continental Army
veterans. “For my own part I wish the bald eagle had not been
chosen as the representative of our country,” he wrote. The
Founding Father argued that the eagle was “a bird of bad moral
character” that “does not get his living honestly” because it steals
food from the fishing hawk and is “too lazy to fish for himself.”
In contrast, Franklin called the turkey “a much more respectable
bird” and “a true original native of America.” While he considered
the eagle “a rank coward,” Franklin believed the turkey to be “a
bird of courage” that “would not hesitate to attack a grenadier of
the British Guards who should presume to invade his farm yard with
a red coat on.” While the private letter was a spirited promotion of
the turkey over the eagle, Franklin never made his views public,
and when the chance had been given to him to officially propose a
symbol for the United States eight years earlier, his idea was
biblical, not avian.

Many people read the letter mentioned in the second paragraph and think that Benjamin Franklin fought with congress over what animal should be on the seal.
What facts or statements from the reading contradicts that idea?

Definition
A political campaign is an organized
effort which seeks to influence the
decision making progress within a specific group. In democracies, political
campaigns often refer to electoral
campaigns, by which representatives are chosen or referendums are decided
Let's see important elements

ELECTORAL COLLEGE
Group of people chosen from each State to formally select the
President and
Vice President
Each candidate
will spend more
time in some
states than
others. They
may even ignore
a few states!
Why is this?
It’s because of a college that has no buildings, no mascot and no classes!
It’s called The electoral college. The members of the electoral college (538 of them) are the people who actually
vote for the president.
DURING THE PRIMARY SEASON, CANDIDATES ARE TRYING TO WIN “DELEGATES.” DELEGATES ARE PEOPLE WHO WILL VOTE FOR THEM AT THE NATIONAL CONVENTION IN THE SUMMER OF 2020. THE CANDIDATE WHO WINS THE MOST DELEGATES WILL GET THEIR PARTY’S NOMINATION.
Vote for me!!
Delegates!!
The process is
confusing!
Here’s an explanation…
Delegates are the people
who ACTUALLY decide who
will be the official candidate
for president. They vote at
the convention in July or
August.
Say
whaaaat???
Let’s pretend there are 100 people that vote in the primary in one of the states.
If this state awards 24 delegates, Biden will get 50% of the delegates. Biden will get twelve delegates.
Thirty people voted for Warren.
That’s 30%. Warren will get 30% of the delegates.
She will get
7 delegates.
Twenty people voted for
Sanders. That’s 20%. He will get
5 delegates.
