PLANTING MULTISPECIES COVER CROPS Ag producers in Frontier, Furnas, Harlan, Hayes, Hitchcock, and Red Willow counties are eligible to receive $61.20 per acre assistance for planting multispecies cover crops. Cover crops can be planted in the spring for a full growing season or after wheat or other summer- harvested crop, and grazing is allowed. Cover crops can be estab- lished on whole fields, partial fields, or as field borders, said Eric Zach, ag program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Cover crops planted as a field border can help with weed suppression and provide high quality forage when gleaning stocks. The Regional Conservation Partnership Program's Cropland Cover Initiative provides financial and technical assistance to ag pro- ducers who adopt multispecies cover-crop mixtures for improving soil health and wildlife habitat. Cost share is available for cover crop seed and planting. Cover crops provide a supplemental forage source, suppress weeds, improve moisture infiltration, boost soil or- ganic matter, and provide habitat for wildlife, Zach said. The appli- cation deadline is May 3. This Cropland Cover Initiative is a partner- ship between the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Game and Parks, Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever and Nebraska Environ- mental Trust. VIETNAM WAR VETERANS HONORED Governor Pete Ricketts hosted a ceremony at the Nebraska State Capitol to honor veterans of the Vietnam War. Over 175 veterans and their family members joined the Governor as he signed a proc- lamation and presented commemorative Vietnam War lapel pins to veterans and deceased veterans’ surviving family members as a sym- bol of gratitude from Nebraskans for their service. “We cannot thank our veterans and their families enough for the sacrifices they’ve made protecting our freedoms,” said Governor Ricketts. “Today’s event was not just about acknowledging the service and sacrifice of our state’s veterans and their families, but a reminder to all Nebras- kans of what many have given to protect our way of life.” Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs (NDVA) Director John Hilgert and Adjutant General for Nebraska Major General Daryl Bohac also spoke at the ceremony and presented Vietnam War lapel pins to veterans. SPORTS Fred Hoiberg will be the next head Men’s Basketball coach at Ne-braska. At Iowa State he led his former school for five seasons leading them to the NCAA tournament four times and a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2014. Hoiberg replaces Tim Miles, who was fired ear-lier this week after seven seasons leading the Huskers. Nebraska Athletic Director Bill Moos will officially introduce Hoiberg as Husk-ers’ new head coach at a Tuesday afternoon press conference in Lincoln. Hoiberg, who was born in Lincoln, is the 28th coach in the history of Nebraska men’s basketball. He joins a fraternity of Husker head coaches that includes his grandfather, Jerry Bush, who guided the Husker program for nine seasons from 1955 to 1963. “First, I want to thank Bill Moos, Chancellor Green and Presi-dent Bounds for the opportunity to lead the Nebraska men’s bas-ketball program,” Hoiberg said. “I can’t express how excited I am to be back on the sidelines and to be coaching at a university that means a lot to my family and me. The McCook Bison track and field teams will host the LeRoy Hoehner Invite today. Teams competing include Cambridge, Colby, Lexington, Holdrege, Gothenburg and Southern Valley. Field events begin at 1 p.m. with running events at 2:30. The Lady Bison tennis team will make a road trip to North Platte for their first invite of the spring. The McCook Community College baseball team will travel to Colby for one nine-inning game this afternoon. Because of weather, and field conditions, the McCook Community College softball team has cancelled Sunday’s games at home against Colby Community College. No make-up dates have been set. Also MCC’s scheduled game at Columbus Monday has been moved to Tuesday. Games are set at 1 and 3 p.m. Central Community College had to move those games because they had to postpone Saturday’s games with North Platte and push them back to Monday.
