It is my great pleasure to welcome you to MAPA Season 1 for 2015. As Monash University continues an exciting expansion of residential capacity, our cultural precinct will take on increasing significance as a vital hub, reflecting the University’s commitment to significant and diverse cultural events. Commensurate with this vision, our programming is diversifying and deepening.

This year, the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music celebrates its 50th anniversary. MAPA has various plans to mark the occasion, including appearances by students and ensembles at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

I am delighted to announce the full Monash Academy Orchestra (MAO) 2015 Season. Across four concerts, with conductors Fabian Russell and Warwick Stengards at the helm, the MAO will perform major Australian works alongside canonical masterpieces, including

Bartok’s rarely performed Duke Bluebeard’s Castle and Beethoven’s Symphony No.9.

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will return with chief conductor Sir Andrew Davis, and the newly refurbished Sir Louis Matheson pipe organ will feature in a series of recitals curated by University Organist John O’Donnell in the Robert Blackwood Hall.

Modern dance company Tasdance will bring their acclaimed production Luminous Flux to the Alexander Theatre, and in this significant centenary year, The Lost WW1 Diary starring Damian Callinan will provide food for thought.

Magda Mayas in RecitalMagda Mayas prepared piano

Magda Mayas is a pianist living in Berlin working in the field of contemporary, improvised music. over the past fifteen years she has developed a vocabulary utilizing both the inside as well as the exterior parts of the piano, using preparations and objects that become extensions of the instrument itself.

Mayas explores textural, linear sound collage, and has developed a set of extended techniques that draw on the history of prepared and inside piano vocabulary, but are highly individualized and expand the language for internal piano music making. the extended techniques are not so much preparations in the Cagean sense, which involves a fixed set up for specific pieces, but a flexible one where all preparations are instantaneously accessible and movable, thus adaptable to different pianos, the acoustics of different concert spaces and musical requirements. the real-time orchestration of timbre, exploration of instrumental colour and textures, both in solo and ensemble contexts, have been the main concern of her work to date.

Magda Mayas performs internationally as soloist and in collaboration with a large number of musicians and composers.

The recital will be followed by a workshop and Q & A from 2:00pm – 3:00pm.

This mesmerising tour-de-force performance, the radio show inside Zoe McDonald’s head, has enjoyed highly successful seasons at the Edinburgh, Adelaide, and Melbourne Fringe Festivals and the 2014 Melbourne International Comedy Festival. ın 1973 sir Louis Matheson was approached on the question of whether he would regard the construction of an organ in robert Blackwood hall as a fitting memorial to his soon-to-be-completed term as first vice-Chancellor of Monash University. his response was positive: he was pleased to hear that those who approached him believed they could ‘raise the wind’. a committee was established under the chairmanship of Professor ron Cumming, and myself as a consultant, and the decision was made to aim for an instrument that would be truly unique in australia. the first choice of builder, Jürgen ahrend of Germany, put a proposal to the committee in 1974 for an instrument to be delivered in 1980, and that is what happened.

Monash University’s ahrend organ is unique in australia, and indeed in the southern hemisphere, as an instrument designed and built entirely according to the methods of the great 17th century builders. ın 2015 the organ is receiving a major refurbishment by Jürgen ahrend’s sons, hendrik and heiko, and to celebrate this important milestone, ı invite you to experience this instrument in pristine condition in three free lunchtime recitals.

Monash University Singers is one of the largest student ensembles at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music. 2015 season

Monash Academy Orchestra (MAO) is a symphony orchestra comprised

of students from the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music as well

as from across the wider Monash campuses and community.


Across four concerts, with conductors Fabian Russell and Warwick Stengards at the helm, MAO will perform

major Australian works alongside canonical masterpieces, including Brahms Symphony No.4, Shostakovich Symphony

No.10, Bartok’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, and Beethoven Symphony No.9. Distinguished Monash alumnus Leslie

Howard will perform Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.1, and the orchestra will premiere a commissioned work from leading

Australian composer Professor Mary Finsterer.

All four concerts will be presented in Robert Blackwood Hall, one of the nation’s finest acoustic spaces for the enjoyment

of orchestral music.

This first concert for 2015 brings together works of three musical giants across three centuries. Arguably Australia’s best known composer, Peter Sculthorpe had a distinguished career in composition and music education both in Australia and overseas. His recent passing sees many of his works being performed on the concert stages of Australia and around the world. At a premiere in North America of his Sun Music IV, the Montreal Star reviewer wrote ‘it grows, it blossoms, it evolves with as much variety as the images in a kaleidoscope - we must hear more Sculthorpe’.

The magnificent Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola, and orchestra in E flat major, K.364, is Mozart's only surviving complete work of this type, a genre that incorporates elements of both the symphony and concerto. The orchestra is joined by two wonderful soloists, Ioana Tache and Kristian Winther.

For his final essay in symphonic form, Brahms composed a truly monumental work. Rich orchestral colours abound, and melody after melody flows right across the orchestra. The triumphant sound of the finale is impossible to avoid, with Brahms using every instrument of the orchestra to drive onwards to the most thunderous and joy-filled conclusion.

In the book Testimony, Shostakovich said: ‘I did depict Stalin in my next symphony, the Tenth. I wrote it right after Stalin’s death and no one has yet guessed what the symphony is about. It’s about Stalin and the Stalin years’.

It has been described as forty-eight minutes of tragedy, despair, terror, and violence, and two minutes of triumph. Shostakovich certainly felt the capriciousness of Stalin’s rule first-hand – he was publicly denounced, his works proscribed, and his status reduced to that of a ‘non-person’. Friends and colleagues disappeared, many of them never to return. The horror of these years – and the collective sigh of relief that doubtlessly followed when Stalin died on March 5, 1953 – certainly make a plausible program for Shostakovich’s Tenth.

Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto is one of the most loved in the repertoire. Arthur Athan, winner of the 2014 Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music Concerto Competition, will make his debut with Monash Academy Orchestra performing this popular work.

The concert opens with a delightful and whimsical work from Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, Dance of the Paper Umbrellas.

Bartók’s only opera occupies a unique place in twentieth century music theatre. Although dark-hued and with only two characters, it has, nevertheless, astonishing theatrical power. The work concentrates on the relationship between Judith and Bluebeard, the gradual exposure of his possessions, domains, and, most importantly, psyche. Bartók’s command of atmosphere and orchestration is simply extraordinary.

We are thrilled to be presenting two of Australia’s internationally acclaimed singers, Deborah Humble and Warwick Fyfe in the roles of Judith and Duke Bluebeard. Both singers received accolades during their appearances in the 2013 Melbourne Ring Cycle.

This special event celebrates the 50 year anniversary of the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music. In honour of this anniversary, MAPA has commissioned a new orchestral work from leading Australian composer Professor Mary Finsterer and the concert sees the return of Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music alumnus and internationally acclaimed pianist Leslie Howard, performing Liszt Piano Concerto No.1. Leslie is a renowned Liszt specialist, having recorded and released the entire piano works of the composer. This concert will also feature four celebrated Australian singers, Merlyn Quaife, Sally-Anne Russell, Bradley Daley and Warwick Fyfe in the celebratory Beethoven Symphony No.9. They will be joined by an augmented Monash University Singers.

Come and be a part of this major musical milestone and enjoy exceptional music performed by some of Australia’s finest musicians.

Leslie Howard piano

A distinguished alumnus of Monash University, Leslie Howard has an outstanding reputation as soloist, composer and writer. He has performed internationally with many of the world’s finest orchestras, and has appeared as soloist with renowned conductors including Claudio Abbado, James Judd, Hiroyuki Iwaki and Sir Charles Mackerras. His performances of chamber music and lieder include collaborations with some of the greatest artists of our time. Considered to be one of the world’s expert authorities on the works of Franz Liszt, Leslie’s discography includes almost one hundred CD recordings of his works, as well as many other important world premiere recordings.

This recital will see him perform some rare gems of the Romantic piano repertoire, including the sonatas of Sibelius and Glazuov, along with works by Liszt.
