The race is one of the oldest on F1’s calendar and takes over the entire state benefiting businesses from bakeries to banks. This report will analyse the commercial impact of the race for the first time and will lift the lid on the secrets to Monaco’s success as a host state. At 195 hectares, the state is small enough to fit inside London’s Hyde Park. Despite its size, it is renowned worldwide for its banking, gaming and hospitality industries. Private sector revenue has risen 72% to €15.9bn over the past decade and it is generated by just 46,600 employees. Space in the state is so tight that it is reclaiming land from the sea in order to expand. Monaco is currently selecting bids to build a six hectare stretch of coast which will cost €1 billion and will be packed with apartment blocks, banks and a new port. The beginning of this dynamic new phase in the state’s 700-year history makes it an ideal time to celebrate Monaco.

THE JEWEL IN F1’S CROWN

The Monaco Grand Prix is one of F1’s oldest races and is undoubtedly the most glamorous. We will look at what makes it so special for fans and drivers. Some of the most well-known winners of the race, including Sir Jackie Stewart, Alain Prost and Mark Webber, will explain why it has such an allure and what are their favourite memories of the Grand Prix. We will also talk to Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg, who is one of the principality’s most famous residents, about what it is like to live in Monaco. To complete the picture, we will get expert commentary about the sights and experience of the race as an ex-F1 champion takes us on a lap of the track.

HOSTING THE RACE

The first Monaco Grand Prix took place in 1929, 21 years before the creation of F1 itself. Michel Boeri, president of the Automobile Club de Monaco will tell us about the history of the race, what it takes to pull it off and the impact it has. The details are astounding as it takes six weeks to prepare the streets for racing and two weeks just to remove the equipment for the Grand Prix. It includes 1,100 tonnes of grandstands, 900 tonnes of pit garages and 33kms of barriers. Infographics will reveal how many workers are required and what they do as well as trends in attendance over the past ten years. It attracts 100,000 people on race day alone whereas Monaco’s population itself comes to just 31,109. To conclude, race director Michel Ferry will reveal the tricks to keeping the state running whilst F1 is in town.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PORT

The Monaco Yacht Club is one of the most famous and this article will look at the services it offers, typical costs and its importance to the state. It has 1,000 members who have an average boat size of 50 metres with a crew of 11 to 12. Its flagship is the club itself and this feature piece will take readers on a tour inside it. The 5,800 square metre structure was designed by Sir Norman Foster and cost €105 million. Fittingly, it resembles an ocean liner and sits right next to the port itself.

MONACO’S RULER

His Serene Highness Prince Albert has ruled Monaco since 2005 and we will interview him about the importance of the Grand Prix and how he is ensuring that it remains the world’s most well-known race. This will also cover his biggest achievements, Monaco’s biggest challenges, his plans and hopes for the future and how Monaco reflects his care for the environment. We will also look at Monaco’s storied history which began in 1297 when Francois Grimaldi seized a Genoese fortress on what is now the rock of Monte Carlo. That was 566 years before Monaco’s historic Grand Casino, the first in Europe, opened its doors and the state’s fairytale status was secured.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Monaco punches well above its weight when it comes to international standing and it has a few tricks under its bonnet which we will uncover here. Michel Dotta, the chairman of the Chambre de Developpement Economique de Monaco will be interviewed about the countries which are targeted for international trade, the research that is done into this and the results which were achieved in 2014. Michel Bouquier, special economic adviser to the government, will also tell us about Monaco Private Label, a program which targets individuals who Monaco would like as residents. We will explain where they come from, how they are researched, what benefits they get from the program and the results that were achieved in 2014 as well as a forecast for 2015.

CASE STUDY: SBM

SBM is the biggest company in Monaco with 4,137 employees and revenue last year of €472.5 million. Founded in 1863, it has a monopoly concession to run Monaco’s casinos until 2027. It owns four of them, including the world-famous Grand Casino, as well as 32 restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, opera house, tennis club and four hotels including the Hôtel de Paris and the Hermitage. In a feature piece we will look at how much the Grand Prix contributes, its plans for SBM’s future, the changing ages and geographic origin of its guests, its strategy for embracing online

gaming and the challenge with keeping its historic assets up to date. It has managed to make Monaco family-friendly by opening the 334-room €200m Bay Resort which has Europe’s first sand-bottomed swimming lagoon and the only casino inside an SBM hotel to have no table games.

ANALYTICS: THE POWERHOUSE PRINCIPALITY

Although Monaco’s residents do not pay income tax, its businesses do. Business income tax is the only direct tax levied by the Monegasque government and this stands at 33.33%. Accordingly, tax on business turnover is the biggest single source of Monaco’s state revenue standing at 48.8% of the €945 million total. An interview with Monaco’s former finance minister, and former Ferrari F1 team boss, Marco Piccinini will look at the most important businesses to Monaco, plans to make it easier to set up a company there, the types of company which are desired and how he moved to government from Ferrari.

CASE STUDY: TOURISM TRENDS

Guillaume Rose, director of tourism and conferences, will reveal where visitors to Monaco come from, how old they are and whether they are there for business or leisure. The biggest growth regions will also be revealed and the strategies for attracting new visitors. We will also give readers a glimpse inside the most glamorous hotel suites in Monaco and will interview the General Manager of the Fairmont hotel, which sits on the famous F1 track hairpin, about the benefit of the race. Completing the picture, the General Manager of the Beach Plaza hotel will reveal the reasons behind its daring expansion which involved giant glass towers being attached to the building.

BUILDING THE DREAM

The leading lights of Monaco’s burgeoning construction and real estate industry will be interviewed about the challenges with building in such a small and over-developed space of land, trends in prices and the latest touches that clients are looking for.
