4 Key Grammar Points' ‘avoir’ (to have) and ‘être’ (to be)
‘avoir’ and ‘être’ are two important irregular verbs. Make sure you can recognise and use them correctly.
avoir (to have) être (to be)J’ai (I have) Je suis (I am)
Tu as (You [singular] have) Tu es (You [singular] are)Il/Elle/On a (He/She has / We have) Il/Elle/On est (He/She is / We are)
Nous avons (We have) Nous sommes (We are)Vous avez (You [plural] have) Vous êtes (You [plural] are)
Ils/Elles ont (They [m/f] have) Ils/Elles sont (They [m/f] are)
( Talking about what you like/don’t like
Use aimer, adorer or détester + a noun to talk about things you like/dislike. Unlike in English, you must use a definite article (le/la/les) before the noun.
⚠ aimer = to like / adorer = to love / détester = to hate⚠ You can say what you like doingl or don’t like doing, by using aimer, adorer or détester, followed by a verb in the infinitive.
eg: J’aime le cinéma Je n’aime pas les animaux
eg: J’aime écouter du rap Je déteste jouer au tennis
& Present tense
You use the present tense to say what you do. For regular -ER verbs like ‘jouer’ (to
play), remove the ending of the infinitive and add the following endings in red.
regarder (to watch)
Je regardE (I watch) Nous regardONS (We watch)
Tu regardES (You [sing] watch) Vous regardeZ (You [plur] watch)
Il/Elle/On regardE (He/She watched / We play)
Ils/Elles regardENT (They [m/f] watch)
) Perfect tense
You use the perfect tense to say what you did or have done. To form the perfect tense
of most verbs, remember the 1-2-3 rule. 1. A subject pronoun (je, tu, il/elle/on…) 2. Part of the ‘helping verb’ in the present tense - usually ‘avoir’ (to have) 3. A past participle (eg: joué, fini, attendu) Some verbs have irregular
past participles. boire (to drink) bu ouvrir (to open) ouvert faire (to do/make) fait
J’ai
Tu asIl/Elle/On aNous avonsVous avez
Ils/Elles ont
To form a past participle, remove the ending of the infinitive and add the new
ending. -ER -é -IR -i -RE -u
⚠ Except for irregular verbs (see opposite)
Past ParticipleHelping verbSubject pronoun
Je/J'Tu
Il/Elle/OnNousVous
Ils/Elles
⚠ The verb ‘aller’ (to go) uses ‘être’ (to be) as its helping verb (not ‘avoir’). The past participle must agree with the subject. eg: Je suis allé(e) Elle est allée
J’adore… / J’aime (beaucoup)… Je n’aime pas… / Je déteste… le cinéma / le sport la musique / la lecture les animaux / les jeux vidéos aller au cinéma / danser écouter du RnB / nager jouer au basket / tchatter regarder des comédies surfer sur Internet
I love… / I like (a lot)… I don’t like… / I hate… cinema / sport music / reading animals / video games going to the cinema / dancing listening to RnB / swimming playing basketball / chatting online watching comedy shows surfing the Internet
