Laboratory of Radioactive Waste Management

• For R&D of innovative method forflameless oxidation of liquid (oils) andsemi-liquid (spent ion resins) organicwaste

• Aim of this technology is to evaluate itsreal operational applicability for disposalof liquid and semi-liquid waste from theenvironmental and technological point ofview.

• Applicability will be based onexperimental experience

• Possibility to use MSO for disposal ofthe organic waste from GEN IV reactors

Laboratory of Radioactive Waste ManagementFlameless oxidation occurs within the moltensalt with high temperatures (to 1000 °C)Alkaline based salts are the best as moltenbaths

Na2CO3, K2CO3,Ternary melts: Na2CO3 + K2CO3 + Li2CO3

MSO is used for lowering the volume of theorganic wasteMSO consist:

Fuel dosage system (for solid/ liquidmaterials)Two-stage reactor systemFlue gas treatmentAnalyzer system for online, offline analysisof the flue gasSystem of spent molten salt disposal

Laboratory of Radioactive Waste Management

§ MSO – laboratory scale:• One stage reactor vessel with

volume of 2 l (0,5 l of moltensalt)

• For small scale laboratoryexperiments• New salts melts• Organic waste disposal• Material (metal and ceramic)

corrosion experiments

Laboratory of Radioactive Waste Management

§ Reactor MSO – pilot scale:• Reactor vessels are made from Inconel 600• Reactors volume is 80 l (40 maximum volume of

the molten salt)• Reactor vessel is protected from overpressure• Concentration of CO is limited to 100 mg/m3 for

dry flue gas• Traces of SO2 and NOx• Oxidizing agent – air• Surplus of oxidizing agent - λ=2• Temperature during process

400 – 1000 °C
