Habitat
• Generally live in marine environment, but can be found virtually everywhere
• Some can also be found by hydrothermal vents
Respiratory System
• Uses gills to filter in dissolved oxygen• Gills in direct contact with water
Reproduction
• Reproduces by using water as a medium to deliver sperm to the female
• Then the female siphons the sperm and fertilizes her eggs
Circulatory System
• Sends oxygen straight from the heart into the spaces in the tissue, known as hemocoel
Skeleton and Appendages
• Have an interior shell, mainly chitin and conchliolin, protein
• Have 5 pairs of appendages
Segmentation
• They have segmentation because they have specific parts of the body that has specific functions.
• Three main part of a molluscan body: foot, visceral mass and a mantle
Cephalization
• Varies but the most advanced is the squid which is about as intelligent as a domestic cat
Coelom
• Coelom is a fluid filled cavity that develops with the mesoderm
• They possess a coelom that functions as a hydrostatic skeleton
Digestive Tract
• They have a two ended digestive tract with mouth and anus
• Releases wastes into the water
Symmetry
• They have bilateral symmetry
Germ Layer
• Mollusca are triploblastic so they have 3 germ layers• The three layers consist of ectoderm, mesoderm and
endoderm
