Molecular Organization and complexity is one of the most important subjects that contemporary chemical research is
concerned with or is trying to address. Chemistry, which is the science of structure and transformation, is the ideal candidate to explain the steps and processes that make matter rejoice the transition from the divided (elementary particle) to condensed phase and finally towards the complex assembly, if not the thinking living organisms.
Supra-molecular Chemistry is an important development in the field of creating complex matter. Generation of complicated structural units bound to each other by intra-molecular non-covalent interactions has paved the way for developing interesting structures. Practitioners strive to establish control over both the spatial or structural and the temporal or dynamic features. Supra-molecular complex entities can show up very interesting behavior. These are based on the functional integration of certain active components present in these assemblies with photons, electrons and ions, or displaying fascinating chemical reactivity. These complex systems have been used to generate the so called “mechano-chemical-devices” or molecular machines in which molecular motions and changes in shape triggered by stimuli can yield functions mimicking conventional mechanical devices. Supra-molecular nanochemistry has emerged as an important field in this discipline.
Theoreticians are also not left behind in this scenario. They are also trying to study how complex patterns form and change in the natural world, and how methods involving quantum effects in conjunction with molecular dynamics can explain the formation of complex structural entities.
Hence, the science of organization and complexity is truly a cross-disciplinary one with the chemists contributing a major share towards its development.
