    Introduction

    There are two types of life tables – cohort/generational and current/period life tables.

    Cohort life tables are constructed using the mortality experience of the cohort and may not be

    useful for the cohort itself because every member of the cohort has to die before such a table can

    be constructed. A current or period life table uses current mortality experience applied to a

    cohort of births. On the basis of age intervals, life tables can also be classified as complete or

    abridged life tables. A complete life table uses exact single years and an abridged life table uses

    age intervals. Five-year age interval abridged current life tables were used in this report.

    Methodology

    Data and Methods

    Computation of an abridged life table from which life expectancy is derived mainly

    requires population and death data by age and sex. In this report, population data consist of the

    1990, 2000, and 2010 census counts of residents of each Illinois County and the city of Chicago.

    These data were aggregated into five-year age groups and by sex and used as denominators in

    computing mortality rates. The death data were received from the Illinois Center for Health

    Statistics (ICHS) of the Office of Policy, Planning and Statistics (OPPS). ICHS receives these

    data from the Illinois Vital Records System (IVRS). Number of deaths by sex and specific age

    for each county were obtained from 1989 to 2011 and aggregated at county level by five-year

    age groups for each sex. Three-year averages were then computed for the periods 1989-1991,

    1999-200,1 and 2009-2011 and were used as numerators in computing mortality rates.

    The overall life tables were constructed using Chiang’s (1984) Method II (Figure 1). This

    method assumes a homogeneous population in which all individuals are subjected to the same

    force of mortality, and in which survival of an individual is independent of the survival of any

    other individual in the group. The method does not remove fluctuations in observed data;

    therefore, the produced life tables exhibit the factual mortality pattern in the actual data more

    than the underlying mortality picture of the populations. The 95% Confidence Intervals were

    computed to provide basis for evaluating the precision of the estimated life expectancies (Figure

    2).

    Technical Notes on Life Table Computation

    Data Used to Compute Life Expectancy

    In this report, we used the enumerated populations as of April 1 in computing the life

    tables, as the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS, 2012) has previously done. Also for

    each period, the denominator population (midpoint) was the census population as of April 1.

    Usually, the July 1 enumerated population is used as the denominator in computing mortality

    rates.

    Abridged Life Table and Life Expectancy (Figure 1)

    Column A. Age Interval (xi- xi+1) in years demonstrates the age interval between two

    exact ages as indicated in the table. The first age interval (

    Column H. Probability of dying in interval (qi) demonstrates the conditional probability

    that an individual who has survived to the start of the age interval will die in the age interval.

    This probability is obtained by the formula: qi=ni*Mi/ [1+ni*(1-ai)*Mi].

    For the age interval 85+, it was assumed that qi = 1 meaning everybody in that interval will die.

    Column I. Probability of surviving (pi) is the conditional probability that an individual

    entering the age interval will survive the age interval. The formula is: pi =1- qi.

    This probability is zero for the age group 85+.

    Column J. Number alive at start of interval (li) is the hypothetical cohort of newborn

    babies on which the computation of the life tables is based. In every life table, this column

    begins with a cohort of 100,000 live births (radix). To obtain the next age group’s hypothetical

    population, the probability of dying (qi) of the subsequent age interval is applied to its

    corresponding number of hypothetical population alive.

    Column K. Number dying in interval (di) is the number of people who died from each age

    group’s hypothetical population. For an age group, this number is obtained by multiplying the

    number of people alive at start of interval by their probability of dying: di =li*qi.

    Column L. Number of years in interval (Li) is the total number of years lived by the

    population of an age group. This number is the sum of the number of years lived by people who

    died in the interval (ni*ai*di) and people who survived over the age group (ni*li); a condensed

    formula is:

    Li=ni*[li+1+ (ai+1*di)]

    Column M. Total Number of years lived beyond start of interval (Ti) is the cumulative

    number of years lived by the cohort population in the age interval and all subsequent age

    intervals.

    Column N. Observed Expectation of life at start of interval (ei) is the life expectancy for

    each fixed age, obtained by dividing the number of alive at start of an interval (li) by the total

    number of years lived beyond start of the interval: ei=Ti/li

    Summary of Results

    The expectation of life at birth for males in Illinois increased from 71.4 years in 1989-91

    to 76.6 years in 2009-11; that for females increased from 78.4 to 81.6 years. For Chicago, the

    expectation of life at birth for males increased from 65.9 to 74.6 years; that for females increased

    from 75.1 to 80.8 years for the same period. In Cook County, males’ expectation of life increased

    from 69.4 to 76.1 years; that for females increased from 77.1 years to 81.5 years from 1989-91 to

    2009-11. Most of the other counties also had increasing numbers of expectation of life. In a few

    counties, such as Hardin and Pope, the life expectancy did not have a clear trend, mostly because

    of their small populations and few or no deaths in some age groups. Confidence intervals were

    included for all the estimates in the complete set of life tables to indicate reliability of these

    estimates (Tables, pp. 9-222).
