THE WEEKLY WRAP: MOREJOY FOR COX & MCCARTAN
By Emma Berry
It was 11 years ago that Xtension (Ire) (Xaar {GB}) became only
the second group winner for his trainer Clive Cox when landing
the G2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage S. under Adam Kirby. In the
intervening years, Cox and Kirby have become a force to be
reckoned with, particularly in the major sprint contests and
often with horses bought relatively inexpensively by the trainer.
Xtension was himself a i15,000 yearling purchase from his
breeder Paul McCartan of Ballyphilip Stud, and he was later sold
on as a 3-year-old to race in Hong Kong before returning to
Ireland in 2015 to stand at Rathbarry Stud.
Xtension was the third foal of his dam, Great Joy (Ire) (Grand
Lodge), who won and was listed-placed in Germany before
being bought by McCartan for 24,000gns at the age of seven.
While Xtension, who went on to win the G1 BMW Champions
Mile two years running, was the best of her offspring on the
track, her daughters are continuing to make notable
contributions to her legacy from the paddocks.
Beatrix Potter (Ire) (Cadeaux Genereux {Ire}) is now best
known as the dam of Harry Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the
dual Group 1-winning sprinter who was another Cox purchase
from Ballyphilip at ,44,000. Cont. p2
MOHAATHER TARGETING QEII Last week=s G1 Sussex S. winner Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing
{GB}) is aiming for the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. on Champions
Day as his next big target, with trainer Marcus Tregoning as-yet
undecided as to whether the 4-year-old will have another start
prior.
AHis end-of-season target will be the QEII,@ said Tregoning.
AWhether something slots in before that we=re not sure yet, but
Ascot is his main target.
AWe could have really done with the [G1 Prix Jacques le]
Marois being a week later than it is. There isn=t anything that
slots in ideally, as the Marois is the 16th [of August] which is a
bit quick and if we drop down to seven for the Foret [on Oct. 4]
it=s too close to Champions Day. With the races all moved
around it=s difficult. At least we=re now looking having won a
Group 1; given how we felt after Royal Ascot things are a good
bit different.@ Cont. p5

More Joy for Cox & McCartan Cont. from p1
Three years after he won the G2 Mill Reef S. for Cox, his half-brother Pierre Lapin (Ire) (Cappella Sansevero {GB}) landed the same race last season for Roger Varian and Sheikh Mohammed Obaid.
In the meantime the family had thrown up another stakes winner in Mrs Gallagher (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a dual listed scorer for William Jarvis and Emma Banks, the team which also won the G3 Valiant S. with Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel
{Ire}) two weekends ago. Mrs Gallagher is the first foal of Great Joy's listed-placed daughter A Huge Dream (Ire) (Refuse To Bend {Ire}).
Last week yet another daughter of Great Joy put Cox back in the spotlight at Goodwood when Supremacy (Ire) (Mehmas
{Ire}) hugged the rail to grab a four-length win in the G2 Richmond S. He too had been bought by his trainer as a yearling, for ,65,000 at the Goffs Premier Yearling Sale. Bred
by the Hong Kong-based Kangyu International Racing, he was
being carried by his dam Triggers Broom (Ire) (Arcano {Ire})
when she was bought at the Tattersalls December Mares' Sale
for 110,000gns.
Supremacy reflects yet more glory on the Great Joy family
but he may yet prove to be a thorn in McCartan's side as his
next target is likely to be the G1 Darley Prix Morny, in which he
may face his stable-mate Nando Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}).
If things had gone to plan at last year's December Sale, Nando
Parrado would have been racing for other connections, but the
165,000gns foal purchase from breeder Anita Wigan was bought
back by the McCartans at 200,000gns when offered as a
yearling. The 'failed' pinhook has subsequently turned a
potential loss into a major win with his 150-1 victory in the
colours of Marie McCartan in the G2 Coventry S. at Royal Ascot.
When the McCartans were looking for a trainer for the colt, it's
little surprise that they plumped for one who had already
reaped great success with Ballyphilip graduates: Clive Cox.
Flying Angels While the McCartan-bred Harry Angel has just completed his
second season at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud and is on his way
south to Australia, his erstwhile paddock mate Battaash (Ire)
(Dark Angel {Ire}), another outstanding Ballyphilip Stud
graduate, continues to light up the season with his
blink-and-miss-it blitzes. In winning the G2 King George Qatar S.
for the fourth consecutive year he also lowered the track record,
just as he did in the G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. last year. And
that seems likely to be the race in which we will see him next,
with a trip to Keeneland for the Breeders' Cup an apparently
longed-for target of his trainer Charlie Hills.

The Weekly Wrap Cont.
Just as at Royal Ascot, Battaash provided one of the highlights
of another terrific week for his owner Sheikh Hamdan Al
Maktoum, who notched six winners at Goodwood to match his
Royal Meeting tally. For obvious anatomical reasons, Battaash
will never join the Shadwell stallion roster, but at some stage the
team at Nunnery Stud can surely look forward to welcoming the
sheikh's G1 Qatar Sussex S. winner Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing
{GB}). While his victory was for one of the sport's major owners,
it brought with it quite a bit of extra cheer as Mohaather also
represents some smaller connections. For Marcus Tregoning,
Sheikh Hamdan has been a longstanding patron and it no doubt
brought the trainer much satisfaction to be able to repay this
loyalty in saddling his first Group 1 winner since Sir Percy (GB)
won the Derby in 2006.
It has been a shorter time between drinks for breeder Gaie
Johnson Houghton, who keeps five broodmares and was
celebrating her second Group 1 winner from the same family in
two years. Indeed, the first came in her own colours with Queen
Anne S. winner Accidental Agent (GB) (Delagator {GB}), who is
out of Mohaather's half-sister Roodle (GB) (Xaar {GB}). The icing
on the cake was that Accidental Agent is trained by Johnson
Houghton's daughter Eve. A recap of this family, which has been
cultivated by Johnson Houghton through five generations, can
be found in Chris McGrath=s TDN Interview with the breeder last
year.
While events at Goodwood doubtless delighted the Shadwell
team, arguably the week's most exciting result for Sheikh
Hamdan was delivered at Deauville on Saturday by homebred
Raabihah (Sea The Stars {Ire}). The 3-year-old filly ran out the
easy winner of the G3 Prix de Psyche for Jean-Claude Rouget,
having previously finished only half a length off behind Fancy
Blue (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) when fourth in the G1 Prix de
Diane. Cont. p4

Espania, knocked down for €3 million at Goffs Orby in 2019 | Goffs
The Weekly Wrap Cont.
This was the only time she had been beaten in four starts and,
with Oaks winner Eswarah (GB) and Midway Lady as her second
and third dams, plus a Derby and Arc winner for a father,
Raabihah is an interesting proposition for the Arc herself.
Rouget, who believes Raabihah to be the "best filly in France",
noted that she is the best filly he has trained since Stacelita (Fr)
(Monsun {Ger}), who won four Group 1s for his stable before
landing another two Grade I races in America for Chad Brown.
Stars Out In Paris Sea The Stars brought the curtain down on his magnificent
3-year-old season in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and though
he is yet to sire a winner of that race, Sea Of Class (Ire) went
close when second to Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) in 2018.
This year, in addition to Raabihah being aimed in that
direction, we finally, hopefully, have the tantalising prospect of
his most famous son
Stradivarius (Ire) being given a
chance in the race. Yes, it may
be short of his best distance but,
with four Goodwood Cups, three
Gold Cups and two Stayers'
Millions titles to his name
already, he has nothing left to
prove in the long-distance
division, so why not give it a
crack?
John Gosden's stable is not
short of top gallopers by Sea The
Stars. Last year's Irish Oaks
winner Star Catcher (GB) has not
been seen out yet this season
but reportedly has remained in training. Meanwhile, Gosden
added a new Group 1 race to his ever-expanding tally when
sending Miss Yoda (Ger) back to her homeland to win Sunday's
Preis der Diana (German Oaks).
The filly, bred by Gestut Etzean, was the co-top lot at the 2018
BBAG Yearling Sale at i280,000, bought on behalf of Georg Von
Opel, who races under the name of Westerberg. A London
resident, the owner has acquired a small bunch of well-bred
fillies in recent years with the aim of starting his own breeding
operation. Miss Yoda's Classic victory marks a terrific start to this
project and was doubtless all the more pleasing for having come
in the land of Von Opel's birth.
As well as Gosden, he has fillies in training in Andre Fabre and
Aidan O'Brien. He purchased the top two lots at last year's Goffs
Orby Sale, both by Galileo (Ire) and full-sisters to Group 1
winners, and both unraced to date. The sister to Alice Springs
(Ire), now known as Magic Hour (Ire), is with Fabre, who also has
another Galileo filly for Von Opel. Named Beluga (Ire), she is a
three-parts-sister to Fabre's Derby winner Pour Moi (Ire)
(Montjeu {Ire}).
The other Galileo filly from Goffs was the i3 million
sale-topping daughter of Vimal and Gillian Khosla's Green Room
(Theatrical {Ire}), who was bought in partnership with MV
Magnier. She is now in training at Ballydoyle and has been
named Espania (Ire).
Brothers Share The Love Hunscote Stud and Mick Channon brought home the trophy
for Sunday's G3 Prix Cabourg thanks to the unbeaten Cairn
Gorm (GB). The flashy chestnut colt is a son of Bated Breath
(GB) but is more reminiscent in looks of that stallion's
half-brother Cityscape (GB), whom Hunscote's Stephen Smith
owns in partnership with Overbury Stud, where he stands.
In fact the last time Hunscote's
purple and green silks were
carried to group-race glory was
by the Channon-trained Dan's
Dream (GB), who became
Cityscape's first black-type
winner in the G3 Fred Darling S.
Cairn Gorm's dam In Your Time
(GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}) has visited
Cityscape on three occasions
and the 3-year-old from this
union, Miss Morris (GB), made
her debut last month for Henry
Candy, while Cairn Gorm's
youngest three-quarter sibling is
a colt, who was born on Apr. 26.
Dunkerque Spirit Strongest in USA The Haras du Quesnay-bred Dunkerque (Fr) (Highest Honor)
was represented by just 122 foals from his seven seasons on the
roster at his home stud and one year at Haras de Grand
Chesnaie, and arguably his three best horses to date have all
raced in America.
If you name a horse Blacktype (Fr), you'd certainly hope he'd
be capable of accruing some, and the gelding from Dunkerque's
first crop who was given this prophetic title has happily proved
to be his sire's most successful runner. He too was bred at
Quesnay and won two races in France when trained by
Jean-Pierre Gauvain before being transferred to French ex-pat
Christophe Clement in the U.S. There, he won a further 10 races,
including back-to-back runnings of the GII Knickerbocker S. at
Belmont Park. Cont. p5

A Quesnay product through and through, Blacktype is out of
the Anabaa mare Theorie (Fr). Another of her offspring,
Theoricienne (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}), won twice in France when
trained by Criquette Head for her mother Ghislaine and she is
now responsible for Dunkerque's latest stakes winner in
America, She's My Type (Fr).
The 3-year-old filly was bought back by her breeder Ghislaine
Head when offered at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale
and, following her close relative to the stable of Clement, she
won Friday's Listed Coronation Cup S. at Saratoga, her second
stakes success of the year.
Dunkerque, a dual Group 3-winning sprinter in his day for the
Head family, has also been represented in the last week at Del
Mar by the GII San Clemente S. runner-up Guitty (Fr), for
another French-born trainer, Leonard Powell.
Closer to home his better runners include the Spanish 1000
Guineas winner Vallila (GB), who also won in France and Britain
and was bred by Liam Norris from the former Quesnay mare
Villabella (Fr) (Hernando {Fr}).
Antoine Bozo Finally, the team at TDN Europe offers sincere condolences to
the family of Antoine Bozo, who died on Saturday at the age of
83.
At the helm of Haras du Mezeray for Paul de Moussac during
the glory days of Arc winners Trempolino and Subotica (Fr),
Bozo's influence on the French racing and breeding industry will
continue to be felt through his sons Henri and Ghislain, and our
thoughts are with them at this time.
Mohaather Cont. from p1
Tregoning was not ruling out a tilt at the GI Breeders= Cup
Mile, either.
AThe Breeders= Cup is three weeks after Ascot this year so that
would give him enough time, but that would be entirely down to
Sheikh Hamdan. He is lightly raced so hopefully we=ll get a few
more goes with him.@
STEEL BULL CHANGES HANDS, TO BE
SUPPLEMENTED TO PHOENIX Group 3 winner Steel Bull (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}), owned and
trained by Michael O=Callaghan for his first two starts, will
contest the Aug. 9 G1 Phoenix S. at The Curragh under new
ownership, as he was purchased privately by Chantal Regalado-
Gonzalez, Racing Post reported on Monday. The son of
Macarthurs Park (Ire) (Equiano {Fr}) will be supplemented to the
six-furlong feature. For O=Callaghan, the £28,000 Goffs UK
Breeze Up juvenile broke his maiden by 2 1/2 lengths at first
asking at Naas on July 22. He followed up in the July 29 G3
Molecomb S. at the Qatar Goodwood Festival to maintain his
perfect record and will stay in O=Callaghan=s care.
AMrs. Regalado-Gonzalez has purchased Steel Bull and the plan
is that the horse will run in the Phoenix S. at the weekend,@
Regalado-Gonzalez=s racing manager Bill Dwan told Racing Post.
AHe was very impressive at Naas first time out, winning by 2 2
lengths, then he backed that up in better company at
Goodwood.@ Cont. p6

He added, AHe did it the hard way in the Molecomb S., so he
looks an exciting prospect and please God he can compete at
the top level this weekend.
AThe [G1] Nunthorpe has also been mentioned, but we=ll take
one step at a time. A lot has happened quickly for this horse, so I
wouldn=t like to predict too far into the future. After the
Phoenix, we=ll let the dust settle and see what the next option
is.@
NEW RESTRICTIONS FOR CORTICOSTEROIDS
& BRONCHODILATORS AT TATTERSALLS &
GOFFS New policies on the use of corticosteroids and
bronchodilatorsBincluding Clenbuterol--for all yearlings, horses
in and out of training and unraced 2-year-olds will be introduced
at the beginning of the UK and Irish yearling sales from Sept. 1
forward, Tattersalls and Goffs announced on Monday. Starting
with the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, all stock sold at the two
sales companies will have these restrictions applied. These new
Conditions of Sale will allow buyers to have post-sale testing for
corticosteroids and bronchodilators (Clenbuterol). Any positive
test or any trace of bronchodilators that appear as a result of
the testing may result in the subject horse being returnable to
the vendor at the option of the purchaser under the new
Conditions of Sale.
These new regulations are in addition to the restrictions
already in place on the use of anabolic steroids and non-
steroidal anti-inflammatories, as well as the ban on the
utilisation of Bisphosphonates which started in 2019.
ABoth Tattersalls and Goffs are united in maintaining the
highest standards of integrity and horse welfare at all of our
sales and the new policies relating to the use of corticosteroids
and bronchodilators reflect our shared commitment to
addressing issues which threaten in any way to undermine
confidence in the marketplace,@ said Tattersalls Chairman
Edmond Mahony and Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby
in a joint statement.
YARMOUTH ABANDONED Yarmouth=s Monday meeting was abandoned after the third
race after jockeys expressed concern about a patch of false
ground resulting from an accident.
Lord Chapelfield (GB) (Delegator {GB}) broke down during the
card=s third race, with jockey Gabriele Malune taken to hospital
for assessment, after which a group of jockeys inspected the turf
course with Clerk of the Course Richard Aldous.
Aldous said, AThe jockeys were concerned about the mark the
horse made when he fell. They felt that the course wasn=t fit in
their opinion. You have got to respect their opinion as they are
the ones riding on it. We will now have a look at the course and
take it from there. We will have a further look at the course this
evening and tomorrow to see where we are at ahead of the
meeting that is scheduled to take place on Friday.
AI think it was a unanimous decision by the jockeys and you
have to respect that. It was terrible to see. Gabriele has gone to
the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston for further assessment.
He was awake and talking upon leaving the track.@
PJ McDonald was among those who inspected the course, and
he said, AWe found a patch of ground that was easier to move,
with inconsistent ground underneath. We couldn=t tell if that
was on a patch where they hadn=t raced yet, so we had to do
the right thing and cancel the meeting.@ Cont. p7

FIRST-SEASON SIRESWITH RUNNERS
Yarmouth Cont.
Amy Murphy, trainer of Lord Chapelfield, shed further light on
the situation, saying, AIt is horrible. Gabriele is my apprentice
and we have lost a horse, so it is devastating. He was
unconscious and not in a good way for the first five minutes, but
the fact that he left in the ambulance talking is really all that
matters.
AIt is devastating for a team of our size to lose a horse as well,
but the main thing that matters is that Gabriele is OK. He was
moving all his legs and arms and was talking. Hopefully it will be
short term rather than long term, but he has been taken off for
full checks. It is one of those horrible things about this game
unfortunately. I was watching it live and he did have a heavy fall
and please God that he remains in one piece. I=m so sorry for the
connections of the horse as he was a homebred and the
breeders adored him. It is heartbreaking for them and my
condolences go out to them.@

Lot 1493, a colt by Shalaa | Magic Millions
SHALAA COLT ON TOP ATMAGIC MILLIONS
By Bren O'Brien
Hong Kong businessman Bon Ho paid top prices for a filly by
Snitzel and a colt by Dundeel (NZ) on the opening day of the
Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, but it was a colt by Shalaa
(Ire) offered as part of the Estate of the late Eduardo Cojuangco,
that secured Monday's top price of $360,000.
At A Glance:$ Matt Laurie Racing, Bahen Bloodstock and Andrew
Williams Bloodstock secured the Shalaa half-brother to
Group 1-producing stallion Hallowed Crown and Needs
Further, who was the last lot through the ring as part of
the Estate of the late Eduardo Cojuangco Sale.
$ Ho's Legend Racing paid $300,000 and $270,000
respectively for two premium lots from Arrowfield's
draft, including a Snitzel filly out of Group 1-winning
mare National Colour (SAF) (National Assembly {Can}).
$ Annabel Neasham struck her first decisive blow as a
trainer by paying $260,000 for a colt by I Am Invincible
out of Group 1-winning mare Serious Speed (Royal
Academy {USA}) from Baramul Stud.
$ Kelly Schweida Racing paid $240,000 for a colt by Shalaa
from the draft of Valiant Stud.
$ The Day 1 National Sale results (which did not include
the Cojuangco Estate Sale) compared very positively to
the first day last year, which was held in June.
$ The Sale average stands at $52,486, while the median is
$35,000. That compares to $41,457 and $30,000 at the
same stage last year.
$ The clearance rate was relatively strong at 74%, up from
64% on Day 1 last year.
$ The Sale aggregate of Day 1 was just shy of $9.5 million
across 180 lots sold, compared with $4.8 million across
sales 116 last year.
Shalaa Colt Tops Day's Results It was the very last lot of a long day, but it was worth the wait
for Matt Laurie, Bahen Bloodstock and Andrew Williams to get
the colt by Shalaa (Ire) out of the excellent producer Crowned
Glory (Danehill {USA}), who had worn the Gooree Park colours
of Eduardo Cojaungco with distinction in her racing career,
which included a Group 3 win and a second in a G1 Golden
Slipper S. She had proven herself even more successful as a
broodmare, with Hallowed Grown a dual Group 1 winner and
Needs Further successful at Group 3 level, while the
half-brothers, currently resident at Twin Hills and Aquis Victoria
respectively, have both produced Group 1 winners as stallions.
Mr. Cojuangco's recent passing prompted a change of business
plan for Gooree Park, and the Shalaa colt, her last foal, was just
the third of her progeny to be offered through the ring.
"He=s got a stallion=s pedigree. He=s a horse who is a
half-brother to Golden Rose-Randwick Guineas horse who is also
from the family of Zabeel and we thought he might be a
3-year-old style of horse," Williams said. "However, given he=s a
Shalaa, he has a bit of Invincible Spirit blood there and, first and
foremost, I thought he was a ripping sort with lovely size and
scope and comes from one of the great nurseries in Australia.
AWe=ve been beaten on a lot [of Shalaas] but this is a pretty
unique horse with his pedigree and the fact that the Cojuancgo
family and Gooree=s history with good horses."
It was the first time that Williams had worked with
Victorian-based trainer Laurie.
AThis is the first horse [I=ve bought for Laurie] but because of
COVID reasons he was stuck and couldn=t get up here. Matty=s
over the moon," he said. AHe=s definitely an Easter style of colt.
Who knows what he could have made at that level and we put
him in that bracket, so it=s great to secure a style of horse like
him."

Lot 1402, a Dundeel colt | Magic Millions
That the colt made such an impression did not surprise Gooree
Park's long time Manager Andrew Baddock.
"He didn=t look like the foal of an older mare. He was very
athletic and he was her last foal. She's been a great mare for us
all the way through from her racing days and she produced two
stallions," he said. "It was fitting that her last foal sold so well.
Funny enough she never had a filly. It wasn't for want of trying,
but she has been a great producer for us and she is very healthy
back at Gooree and will live her days out there.
"We wish the purchasers all the very best for him and we will
be watching and cheering him wherever he is racing."
Laurie and Bahen Bloodstock also combined to buy another
Shalaa colt from the Estate Sale, a half-brother to the Listed
winner Tactical Advantage (Bel Esprit) for $100,000, while a
third Gooree Park colt, Lot 1486 out of imported mare Sensible
Lady (USA) (Street Sense {USA}), was also picked up for
$100,000 by Olly Koolman.
Ho Continues Spending
Spree Bon Ho has already invested
heavily in yearlings this
season, spending over $4.3
million at the Inglis Easter
Yearling Sale and nearly $4
million on the Gold Coast in
January and he continued to
seek elite bloodstock, with
two marquee purchases on
Day 1 of the National Sale.
With a pedigree which
features a Group 1-winning
dam and two Group
1-winning three-quarter brothers in Rafeef (Redoute's Choice)
and Mustaaqeem (Redoute's Choice), the filly by four-time
Australian champion Snitzel, Lot 1276, was always going to
attract plenty of attention from Arrowfield's draft.
Another three-quarter brother fetched $330,000 at this Sale
last year and with her residual value as a possible broodmare, it
was no surprise to see her top the first day.
"She was the star filly on pedigree and type in the Sale,"
Arrowfield Bloodstock Manager Jon Freyer said. "She was a
gorgeous filly out of a champion, so it was a great opportunity
for anybody looking to acquire a class race filly and possible blue
hen broodmare.
"She was cast in the same mould as her Group 1-winning
brothers, but probably a more feminine version."
Ho, bidding over the phone won the day, adding to the five
fillies he bought at Sydney and the Gold Coast earlier this year.
"He bought the Snitzel-More Joyous filly at Easter for
$800,000, and she is already showing talent on the track. It
seems he is encouraged by that," Freyer said. "He's had some
success with us as an owner in the past and we have a good
relationship with him. We are delighted that he got her."
Ho was again to the fore when Arrowfield offered Lot 1402, a
colt by Dundeel (NZ) out of Aspen Summit (Fastnet Rock), the
sister to G1 Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights, for $270,000.
AHe was a cracking colt, a really cracking colt," Freyer said. "I
think he would have made, probably double that in a normal
market, but good luck to him [Ho].
"That colt has an international pedigree, and the half-brother
by Deep Impact (Solar Apex) is with Chris Waller and is likely to
end up in a Spring Champion S. or something like that. I think
this colt was a great buy. He's Dundeel colt that is one of those
precocious early coming type of horses, like Super Seth or
Castelvecchio."
Solar Apex (Deep Impact
{Jpn}) debuted last month
over 1600 metres finishing
third in the colours of
Northern Farm. Also in the
pedigree is Irish Lights's
daughter, and a blood relation
to this colt, Omei Sword (High
Chaparral {Ire}), who was a
Group 2 winner and Group 1
runner-up.
Arrowfield finished the day
as top vendor, selling 15
yearlings for a total of $1.72
million and an average of
$114,667, while Baramul Stud
sold the most yearlings on the
day, 20 in all for a total of $1.24 million and an average of
$61,975.
Neasham Makes Her Mark Among those sold by Baramul was Lot 1330, the I Am
Invincible colt picked up by Annabel Neasham, who is set to
start out on her own as a trainer this season, for $260,000. The
Sydney assistant trainer for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace
made a statement by winning the bid for the well-bred son of
G1 Thousand Guineas winner Serious Speed.
"He's by the right sire and he's out of a group-winning mare.
On paper, he looked the real deal, and as a physical as well,
while he's already turned two, he looks a nice second half of the
year 2-year-old," Neasham said. "He looks like the type of Vinnie
that is going to have enough scope to go on as a 3-year-old."

"It's a little bit surreal buying these horses. But I want to start
with quality where you can. I'm lucky I've got some good
support behind me which is enabling me to buy these well-bred
horses. I was only ever going to buy a handful now and we will
really look to consolidate for next season, come Magics in
January," she said. "That's still six months away, so I think it=s
important in your first year of training to try and get some nice
horses in your stable, and I thought this horse fitted the bill."
Neasham also purchased Lot 1410, a colt by Snitzel from
Baramul Stud for $150,000. He is out of Bellapin (NZ) (Pins), who
is out of stakes-winner Dazzling Belle (NZ) (Desert Sun {GB}) and
is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Magic Dancer (NZ) (Rip Van
Winkle {Ire}).
Shalaa in Demand The first crop of Arrowfield's Stud's Shalaa have impressed
Australian buyers this season and as well as those offered
through the Estate Sale, another five were sold on Monday,
including Lot 1239, a colt from Valiant Stud who went to Kelly
Schweida for $240,000. He is a half-brother to two winners and
is from the extended family of Group 1-winning mare Secret
Agenda (Not A Single Doubt).
Early in the day, Hong Kong buyer Cheung Shun Ching paid
$230,000 for Lot 1220, a colt by Medaglia D'Oro (USA) offered
by KBL Thoroughbreds, while Bevan Smith Bloodstock paid
$220,000 for a filly by Not A Single Doubt offered by Alexia
Fraser Bloodstock.
Smith spent $437,500 to be the day's second-biggest buyer
behind Legend Racing, while the top three stallions on aggregate
were all Arrowfield residents in Snitzel, Dundeel and Shalaa.
Freyer was full of praise with how the Sale has panned out so
far.
"The boys have done a great job at Magic Millions in very
difficult and trying circumstances. To get a buying bench has not
been easy. They have done a great job and it's full credit to
them. They=ve cobbled together some good results, in very
difficult circumstances," he said.
Overall, Freyer is not surprised by how well the Sale is
progressing.
"The market is traditionally very resilient, and it has been in a
lot of places. I notice in South Africa, their sale was only down
7-8% and they have had similar difficulties to us," he said. "It=s a
similar story in other places. It=s held up reasonably well. There's
a few factors at play, but horse people love to keep at it. Long
may it last!"

THE TDN DERBY TOP 12FOR AUGUST 4
by T.D. Thornton
There are now three remaining ARoad to the GI Kentucky
Derby@ qualifying points races on the schedule, and six horses
within this week=s TDN Derby Top 12 are slated to compete in
two of those races this weekend.
1) TIZ THE LAW (c, Constitution--Tizfiz, by Tiznow)
O-Sackatoga Stable. B-Twin Creeks Farm (NY). T-Barclay
Tagg. Sales History: $110,000 yrl >18 FTNAUG. Lifetime

Tiz the Law is decisively parked at the top of the crop, with
Nos. 2, 3, and 4 on this list more or less on even footing and
everyone from No. 5 on back scrambling for a firm spot in the
pecking order. Will 10 furlongs at Saratoga be the stumbling
block for this $110,000 Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Sale graduate
(cue the Agraveyard of favorites@ cliches)? Or will Saturday=s
GI Runhappy Travers S. serve as yet another launch point for Tiz
to widen the gap between him and his peers? Cont. p9
FASIG-TIPTON CATALOGUES 662 FOR
SELECTED YEARLINGS SHOWCASEby Jessica Martini
Fasig-Tipton, which has been forced to shuffle its traditional
calendar of yearling auctions due to the global pandemic, has
released a catalogue of 662 head for its Selected Yearlings
Showcase, which will be held Sept. 9 and 10 at its Newtown
Paddocks in Lexington. Fasig-Tipton cancelled its three select
sales--the July, Saratoga and New York-Bred Sales--and the
showcase auction will be its only select sale in 2020.
AWe are thrilled with the overall quality of the catalogue, both
in terms of the pedigree and the physical conformation of the
horses,@ Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. said Monday
afternoon. AWe couldn=t be any more pleased to have this group
of horses on display in the showcase this year.@
Hips one through 330 will be offered during Wednesday=s first
session of the showcase sale and hips 331-662 will be offered
Thursday. The sale will begin with a group of New York-bred
yearlings, which are catalogued as hips 1-164. Cont. p3

Fasig-Tipton Catalogues 662 for Showcase(cont. from p1)
Of expectations when the first-ever showcase was announced
at the end of April, Browning added, AI didn=t have any
preconceived notions, per se. I don=t think any of us knew what
to expect. I will say though, if
somebody had told me that we
would be able to put together a
group of horses of this quantity
with this quality, I would have
been ecstatic. The support that
we=ve received from our
consignors and the men and
women who own top yearlings
has been very gratifying and it=s
very much appreciated.@
With the coronavirus causing
lockdowns across the globe and
racing coming virtually to a halt
this past spring, Fasig-Tipton was
forced to scupper its Gulfstream
2-Year-Olds in Training Sale and its Santa Anita 2-Year-Olds in
Training Sale.
The sales company produced a strong market when bidding
returned with the Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale at the
end of June and at its July Horses of Racing Age Sale. Those
results, plus the return of high-class racing across the country,
should provide buyers and sellers with a level of optimism
heading into the showcase sale.
ACertainly the sales that we=ve
conducted have been
encouraging,@ Browning said. AAnd
it is sure nice to see quality racing
taking place in Saratoga and Del
Mar and Ellis Park and Gulfstream
Park, literally all across the United
States. I think that makes owners
and trainers and participants in the
industry feel much more confident
than they did 45 days or so ago
when there was inactivity,
essentially paralysis. So I think that
is obviously a very positive sign.
The 2-year-old sales and the
horses of racing age sales that have been conducted in June and
July have shown the resiliency of the men and women who
participate in this game and the love they have for it.@ Cont. p4

Boyd Browning | Fasig-Tipton photo
Among the Fasig-Tipton graduates on the showcase
catalogue=s cover include GI Kentucky Derby contenders Tiz the
Law (Constitution) and Honor A.P. (Honor Code), as well as
GI Kentucky Oaks contender Speech (Mr Speaker). Browning
said those graduates are indicative of the quality of offerings the
company prides itself on.
AI think the buyers will be very impressed when they look at
the catalogue online or on their iPads or when they get it in their
hands,@ he said. AMore importantly, the buyers are going to be
very impressed when they come on the sales grounds and look
at the individuals. We=ve built our reputation--and we take pride
in--the physical aspect of our selected sales and I think the
results speak loudly with the success of our sales graduates. I am
confident that people are going to come on these sales grounds
and say, >Wow. That is a really nice group of horses they=ve
assembled for the Yearlings Showcase at Fasig-Tipton.=@
At both the Midlantic and July sales, Fasig-Tipton instituted
safety protocols which included temperature checks, masks and
social distancing.
As for what protocols participants should expect at the
showcase, Browning said, AWe are having multiple discussions
on an everyday basis as more information is obtained and we
see trends and movements in both the state of Kentucky and
around the United States. We certainly want to make sure we
conduct the sale in as safe an environment as we possibly can to
give buyers and sellers alike the confidence to participate.@
Last week, Keeneland announced it would be requiring proof
of a negative COVID-19 test for people attending its September
Yearling Sale. Asked if Fasig-Tipton would make a similar
requirement, Browning reiterated, AWe will continue to monitor
the situation and finalize our protocols in upcoming days, but
they have not been finalized at this time.@

Travel concerns and restrictions have limited international
participation in auctions this spring, but both Fasig-Tipton and
Keeneland have been coordinating with local officials to
hopefully pave the way for foreign buyers to attend auctions this
fall.
AFasig-Tipton and Keeneland are working closely with the KTA
and the Breeders= Cup and the NTRA, along with government
officials, Senator [Mitch] McConnell=s office and Representative
[Andy] Barr=s office to try to obtain some waivers for key
participants in foreign countries to be able to attend the sale,@
Browning said. AThat process is ongoing and will continue to be
ongoing and we will hopefully receive some positive news. I
think it will be a situation that looms between now and the time
of the sales in September and it is going to depend on each
individual=s assessment of their level of comfort with regards to
travel.@
Fasig-Tipton will unveil its newly updated Enhanced Catalogue
platform for the showcase. A traditional offering at its
November and July Horses of Racing Age sales, the Enhanced
Catalogue will be available beginning in late August with walking
videos of all yearlings available for viewing beginning Sept. 2.
Fasig-Tipton, which introduced online bidding for the first time
at its Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, will again offer
buyers the opportunity to bid online at the showcase.
The showcase catalogue may be viewed at www.fasig-
tipton.com.
CHURCHILL MAY REQUIRE DERBY JOCKEYS
TO BE IN KENTUCKY BY AUG. 24 by Bill Finley
Churchill Downs may require all jockeys riding during the short
meet surrounding the GI Kentucky Derby to be in the state of
Kentucky by Aug. 24. Churchill Downs Senior Director,
Communication & Media Services Darren Rogers said the rule is
being considered but no official decision will be announced until
later in the week.
Rogers added that Churchill is also expected to announce
shortly a complete list of protocols that will be in place for the
Derby, including how many fans will be allowed to attend the
race.
For jockeys who regularly ride in New York and in California,
meeting the Kentucky requirements would mean missing the
final two weeks at Saratoga and Del Mar. Once returning to their
home base they would likely have to undergo another
quarantine period before being allowed to ride again. In New
York, anyone traveling to a number of states, Kentucky among
them, must go into quarantine for 14 days upon returning to the
state.

Anticipating that his rider will be required to be in Kentucky by
the 24th and under quarantine, agent Angel Cordero, Jr. said
that Manny Franco will not be giving up the mount on possible
Derby favorite Tiz the Law (Constitution).
AWe have to go,@ Cordero said. AYou don=t just find horses like
this one. It=s going to be tough for all the jockeys because
they=re going to have to spend two weeks without riding and
then have to ride in an important race like that.@
Cordero said he was hoping that riders would be allowed in on
the eve of the race if they could provide evidence that they did
not have the coronavirus.
AI don=t know why they just don=t test them and if they test
clean they should let them ride,@ he said. AWe will be missing the
last part of Saratoga and then maybe another two weeks after
that. All together, we=ll miss about a month. I know everyone is
dealing with the same problem, but I=m a believer that if you
test clean, they should let them ride. Why don=t they test them
three days before the Derby or one day before the Derby and if
they don=t test clean just take them off the horses.@
Mike Smith, who rides top GI Kentucky Oaks contender Swiss
Skydiver (Daredevil) and has been riding top Derby candidates
Honor A.P. (Honor Code) and Authentic (Into Mischief) said he=s
not sure what he is going to do.
AI just don=t know what to do,@ he said. AWhat they=re asking us
to do seems very difficult to do. You=re going to have to be there
10 days out. I=d rather be somewhere where I feel safer and just
fly in, test and ride. This way, I think you have more of a chance
of picking it up, being outside of your house and having to go
out to eat. I=m not saying I won=t be riding at Churchill. It=s just
that this is going to be really difficult.@
Bob Baffert, who trains a number of Derby contenders,
including Authentic, said he also hopes Churchill will come up
with another way of dealing with out-of-town riders.
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 7 OF 19 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • AUGUST 4, 2020
Baffert took part in a virtual town hall meeting Monday with
horsemen in which Churchill Downs President Kevin Flannery
discussed the potential rules the track is considering for Derby
week.
AI hope they are still working on this and just threw this out
there,@ he said. ATo me, they=re playing with fire bringing them
in there 10 days before. That gives them a chance to get sick. Let
them come in like Monmouth Park did for the Haskell. They
went to a place there and got tested and within 15 minutes they
got their results. It seems to me that they should let them come
in, test them, let them ride and then let them get out of there.
That is as long as they come in there with a negative test. I told
Kevin Flannery that this was a bad idea. If they wanted to do all
this they should have just run the race in May.@
Baffert said he had yet to discuss Derby week plans with any of
the jockeys who might ordinarily be riding in Kentucky for him.
Ron Anderson, the agent for John Velazquez and Joel Rosario,
said Monday he wasn=t sure what his riders would do.
AChurchill Downs can do what they want to do,@ Anderson
said. AI don=t think it is a proper decision, but it=s their ball game.
We will have to play the cards we are dealt. How many days
would they have to sit out when coming back? I don=t know how
to weigh any of this. I have multiple decisions to make on behalf
of both of my jockeys. Right now, I have no idea what to do. This
is a huge predicament for everybody.@
During the meeting with trainers, Flannery discussed several
other protocols the track is considering, among them allowing
only two owners per Derby horse to come on the backstretch.
Under the proposal, jockeys riding Derby week must take at
least two coronavirus tests before being allowed to ride, one on
Aug. 24 and another on Aug. 31 A rider who tests positive during
the first phase would be required to quarantine for 10 days,
which would still allow them to ride in the Derby and/or the
GI Kentucky Oaks.
A jockey coming into Kentucky to ride for the Churchill
September meet might be inclined to stay. Returning to their
home base would also likely require an additional quarantine
period, while staying in Kentucky would allow them to ride
uninterrupted at Kentucky Downs, the fall meet at Churchill and
then the Breeders= Cup, which will be held Nov. 6 and 7 at
Keeneland.

MAX PLAYER TUNES UP FOR RUNHAPPY
TRAVERS Max Player (Honor Code), who ran on nicely to complete the
trifecta in the GI Belmont S. June 20, turned in his final serious
work Monday morning ahead of a rematch with Tiz the Law
(Constitution) in Saturday=s GI Runhappy Travers S. at Saratoga.
Owned by George Hall and SportBLX Thoroughbreds, Max Player
breezed five furlongs in 1:01.55 over the Belmont training track.
AWe worked him in company head and head with another
horse and they went five-eighths in 1:01.2. It was just a
maintenance breeze,@ said trainer Linda Rice. AIt was just a nice
comfortable breeze. I feel it was exactly what he needed. He'll
ship up to Saratoga on Wednesday and train there.@
Bred by Hall=s K & G Stables, Max Player, a $150,000 buyback
at Keeneland September in 2018, broke his maiden at Parx at
second asking last December, following that effort with a fast-
finishing, 3 1/4-length victory in the GIII Withers S. Feb. 1. He was
trained up to the Belmont and was beaten 5 1/4 lengths into third.
AHe trained very well into the Belmont and had improved
dramatically up to June when the Belmont ran,@ said Rice. ASince
then, we=ve been holding steady. I haven't trained him quite as
aggressively because he's not coming off of a five-month layoff
this time.@
The in-form Joel Rosario retains the call this weekend.
In other Travers developments:
--Trainer Orlando Noda has tabbed David Cohen to ride recent
Saratoga maiden winner First Line (First Samurai) in the 10-
furlong event. Cohen was aboard Golden Ticket (Speightstown)
when he dead-heated with Alpha (Bernardini) in the 2012
Travers.
-->TDN Rising Star= Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper) will pass the
Travers in favor of the GII Jim Dandy S. Sept. 5. "We've been
conservative with the horse up to this point and we'll stay
conservative for now,@ trainer Mike Stidham said of the
Godolphin homebred, third to Travers aspirant Country
Grammer (Tonalist) in the GIII Peter Pan S. July 16.
DEL MAR ADDS RACE DATE The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has added a 10-race make-up
date to its calendar Aug. 31. First post on the added day will be
2 p.m. The oceanside track had been forced to cancel a
weekend of racing in July when several jockeys tested positive
for coronavirus. The 2020 summer meet will now have 27 live
race dates. It had been scheduled to have 28 days.

Art Collector | Coady
Tiz the Law (cont. from p1)
Right now there are no soft spots evident on Tiz=s resume. He
breaks adeptly from the gate and dictates the tempo even when
he=s just stalking, and when this colt fully uncorks deeper into
his races, it is with enough gusto to win by open lengths and
with no one even close to him in the final furlong. Early in his
career, Tiz had a knack for finding trouble and (mostly)
overcoming it. As he=s matured, he and regular rider Manny
Franco have instead learned to channel that keenness into a
confident assertiveness that forces others to conform to Tiz=s
menacing presence. Tiz the Law will be solidly favored Saturday,
but he=s no mortal lock. Yet if he does win, it will set up the
highly unusual circumstance of the Derby fave already having
won at 1 1/4 miles. Then, of course, with that all-important
distance question answered, the focus will shift to how Tiz=s only
loss to date was at Churchill Downs, the site of the Derby.
2) ART COLLECTOR (c, Bernardini--Distorted Legacy, by
Distorted Humor)
O/B-Bruce Lunsford (KY). T-Thomas Drury Jr. Lifetime Record:
GSW, 8-4-1-0, $548,475.
Last Start: 1st GII Toyota Blue Grass S., KEE, July 11
Next Start: Runhappy Ellis Park Derby, ELP, Aug. 9
Equineline PPs. KY Derby Points: 100
Art Collector goes in Sunday=s Ellis Park Derby as the horse to
beat. But he=s not on the hunt for qualifying points (currently
fifth with 100), so he needn=t be fully cranked when the true
target is really four weeks later in Louisville. His 103 Beyer
Speed Figure, 3 1/2-length breakout win in the GII Blue Grass S.
was admirable for the sustained pressure Art Collector applied
over nine furlongs before out-torqueing a very game Swiss
Skydiver (Daredevil) in the stretch. Yet until we see more
stakes-quality horses run back from Keeneland=s July mini-meet,
it will be hard to quantify how many performances over those
five days were affected by a perceived bias that at times seemed
to favor pace-pressers.
Even if Art Collector did win under ideal circumstances, the
overall body of work for this athletic-framed Bruce Lunsford
homebred does not stamp him as a one-race wonder. He=s
crossed the finish wire first sprinting on the turf, in the slop, and
on a dry track, and then scored by open lengths in both his route
attempts. If you=re a firm believer in the Awhat have you done
for me lately?@ angle, it=s also worth noting that Art Collector
and Tiz the Law are the only Top 12 contenders with perfect
three-for-three records in 2020.
3) HONOR A.P. (r, Honor Code--Hollywood Story, by Wild Rush)
O-C R K Stable LLC. B-George Krikorian (KY). T-John
Shirreffs. Sales History: $850,000 yrl '18 FTSAUG. Lifetime
Record: GISW, 5-2-3-0, $382,200. Last Start: 2nd Shared
Belief S., DMR, Aug. 1. Accomplishments include: 1st GI
Runhappy Santa Anita Derby, June 6; 2nd GII San Felipe S., SA,
Mar. 7. Next Start: GI Kentucky Derby, CD, Sept. 5 Equineline
PPs. KY Derby Points: 140.
Honor A.P. ran second and earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure
for his effort in the Shared Belief S. at Del Mar. But he never
looked comfortable at 1-5 odds, and even before the race went
off it had an aura of being one of those preps where the
circumstances weren=t going to be ideal for him.
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 19 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • AUGUST 4, 2020
Honor A.P. has demonstrated he wants more ground, not less,
and he was cutting back half a furlong to 1 1/16 miles from his
nine-furlong GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby score. The
dynamics of the four-horse Shared Belief meant he would have
be closer to the pace than he preferred, but Honor A.P. had little
choice but to work from the back of the pack after getting solidly
bumped at the start by one Bob Baffert trainee while another
darted to an uncontested lead. Jockey Mike Smith opted for the
three path on both turns with Honor A.P. while race winner
Thousand Words (Pioneerof the Nile) rode the rail all the way
around. Honor A.P.=s so-so late surge to get second was visually
amplified by Cezanne (Curlin) backpedaling out of contention. AI
haven=t been able to get on him in the mornings [because of
pandemic protocols] and I think that=s made a difference,@ Smith
said. AHe=s just been going along there not doing much in the
mornings. I need to be on him and get more out of himY. This
distance is too short for him, too.@ Except a tighter and mightier
Honor A.P. in Louisville.
4) KING GUILLERMO (c, Uncle Mo--Slow Sand, by Dixieland
Band)
O-Victoria=s Ranch. B-Carhue Investments, Grouseridge Ltd. &
Marengo Investments (KY). T-Juan Avila. Sales History: $90,000
RNA yrl >18 KEESEP; $150,000 2yo >19 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record:
GSW & GISP, 5-2-1-1, $340,350.
Last Start: 2nd GI Arkansas Derby, OP, May 2
Accomplishments Include: 3rd Pulpit S., GP, Nov. 30; 1st
GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby
Next Start: GI Kentucky Derby, CD, Sept. 5
Equineline PPs. KY Derby Points: 90.
King Guillermo shipped from his Florida base to Churchill
Downs last week, settling into the next phase of his purposely
planned (yet still unconventional) quest to win the Derby off a
127-day gap between starts. Regret won the 1915 Derby off a
259-day break, and Sir Barton won the 1919 Derby off a 238-day
rest. Since 1929 (when more complete records began being
kept), the longest winning layoff has been 42 days, equaled by
Needles in 1956 and Animal Kingdom in 2011. This bay colt won
the GII Tampa Bay Derby off a 97-day respite back in March,
registering a 49-1 shocker that was both visually impressive and
the third-fastest clocking of that stakes in 40 runnings (99
Beyer).
TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 11 OF 19 • THETDN.COM TUESDAY • AUGUST 4, 2020
Trainer Juan Carlos Avila then shipped him to Oaklawn, where
King Guillermo ran a gutsy second in the faster division of the
split GI Arkansas Derby, responding to a very aggressive ride
from the far turn home. If heavy favorites in the remaining prep
races start to wilt in the August heat, Avila=s Aless is more@ Derby
training plan could end up looking pretty shrewd come the first
Saturday in September and not as strange as when he first
publicly announced it in May.
5) COUNTRY GRAMMER (c, Tonalist--Arabian Song, by
Forestry) O-Paul P Pompa Jr. B-Scott & Debbie Pierce (KY). T-
Chad Brown. Sales History: $60,000 Ylg >18 KEESEP; $450,000
2yo >19 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: GSW, 5-2-0-1, $117,320.
Last Start: 1st, GIII Peter Pan S., SAR, July 16
Next Start: GI Runhappy Travers S., SAR, Aug. 8.
Equineline PPs. Derby Points: 50
Country Grammer has the most realistic chance of upsetting
Tiz the Law in Saturday=s Travers. This colt=s stalking/grinding
win in the GIII Peter Pan S. on opening day at Saratoga (95
Beyer) caught the eye because of the deft, corner-cutting move
turning for home executed by jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. And when a
fresh threat emerged in deep stretch, Country Grammer was
emboldened by the challenge, digging in and ripping back the
lead before edging away to a neck victory under confident
handling. Trainer Chad Brown said post-race that his colt seems
suited to longer distances, and he also noted that Country
Grammer just didn=t seem to care for the Belmont Park surface,
over which he trained only okay and finished third in a
contentious June 4 allowance. This is a fresh face within the Top
12 who is two-for-two over nine furlongs by a sire who won the
1 1/2-mile GI Belmont S. Now he=s stretching out again over a
racing strip he seems to relish for a trainer who generally
doesn=t wheel horses back this quickly--look out.
6) THOUSAND WORDS (c, Pioneerof the Nile--Pomeroys Pistol,

O-Albaugh Family Stables & Spendthrift Farm. B-Hardacre Farm

Thousand Words | Horsephotos
Uncle Chuck takes on Tiz the Law in Saturday=s GI Runhappy Travers S.
Horsephotos
Which is the real Thousand Words? The million-dollar
Keeneland September purchase who reigned as the No. 1
kingpin on this list for most of the winter and wired the Shared
Belief S. with a 104 Beyer on Saturday? Or the well-backed
Pioneerof the Nile bay who lost two important preps in March
and April by a combined 41 lengths? In the Shared Belief,
Thousand Words broke professionally and assumed command at
the head of the four-horse field, dictating a moderate tempo
while not seriously pressured until the top of the lane.
Stablemate Cezanne briefly seized the lead, but Thousand
Words clawed it back in workmanlike fashion, responding to
repeated urging while the top two threats, Cezanne and Honor
A.P., both seemed sapped in deep stretch. The victory wasn=t
exactly a display of dominance, but Thousand Words didn=t need
to tower over his foes to be considered a legitimate threat for
the Derby. He=ll be heading to Churchill on the upswing with a
bit of last-race momentum on his side.

Uncle Chuck, undefeated in a pair of West Coast two-turn
efforts, will get an immersion in the deeper end of the Derby
prep pool when he travels cross-country for Saturday=s
10-furlong Runhappy Travers S. at Saratoga.
This colt=s form got a boost this past weekend when
stablemate Thousand Words, who had finished second to Uncle
Chuck in the July 4 GIII Los Alamitos Derby, came back to wire
the Shared Belief S. at Del Mar at 9-1 odds. This Bob Baffert
trainee has fired three straight training bullets at Del Mar, but
don=t overlook the in-race stamina seasoning Uncle Chuck got
when he raced over the Los Al strip. At 1,380 feet, it=s the
longest in North America.
8) SHARED SENSE (c, Street Sense--Collective, by Bernardini)

Last Start: 1st GIII Indiana Derby, IND, July 8

Shared Sense broke through the Kentucky Derby relevance
barrier with a track-record win in the nine-furlong GIII Indiana
Derby July 8, but the race in his past performance block that
might end up being the truer benchmark for where he belongs
in the Kentucky Derby picture is his second-place effort two
starts back behind Art Collector. Shared Sense was 6 1/2 lengths
behind that fast-rising foe back on June 13 in an allowance/
optional claimer. Has he improved enough in the last two
months to be on even terms with the No. 2-ranked contender?
This Street Sense homebred for Godolphin could get a shot at a
rematch if he=s entered in Sunday=s Runhappy Ellis Park Derby.
Shared Sense breezed a half mile in :50.40 (54/75) on Sunday at
Churchill Downs.

It=s not often that a Derby contender wins a million-dollar race
yet gets downgraded within the Top 12 pecking order. But that=s
the case with Authentic=s GI Haskell S. victory. Even though he
got the job done and earned a 100 Beyer, he left the overall
impression of needing to step up his game if he=s to withstand
intensified pace pressure in a 20-horse field going 10 furlongs.
Authentic was 3-5 against a field of six and secured an easy lead
through tepid fractions. He was home free by three lengths at
the eighth pole, but caved in the final furlong before being
reawakened by a desperate flurry of right-handed stick work
from jockey Mike Smith to salvage a nose victory. In the
aftermath of the Haskell, both Smith and trainer Bob Baffert
referenced focus issues that included Authentic gawking around,
shying from shadows, and Aplaying@ when he should have been
working. Authentic has considerable pace-pressing talent, but
also a history of tardy breaks and losing concentration in the
stretch. Smith said he intentionally rode Authentic assertively
for about a pole past the finish as a schooling measure that
might pay off next time. Baffert suggested blinkers could be
next.

Next Start: Uncommitted
Equineline PPs. KY Derby Points: 43.
If the Derby were run today, Enforceable would be about 30-1.
But he would still be tough to exclude from exotics because both
his stamina-centric pedigree and running style suggest that
when pace and trip circumstances align, the tools are there for
this colt to run right by everybody in the stretch over 10
furlongs. Even though the race record of this expensive KEESEP
buyback isn=t stellar (2-for-10 with only a MSW and the GIII
Lecomte S. to his credit), do you really want to toss out a Mark
Casse-conditioned horse who will have had six weeks of training
over the Churchill surface by race day? Especially if the race
ends up being front-loaded with sacrificial speed? Enforceable
seemed to be fighting a significant first-flight bias at Keeneland
while adrift on both turns when fourth in the Blue Grass S.
behind duelers who finished 8 1/2 lengths clear of the pack. He
breezed five-eighths on Saturday in 1:02.60 (14/19), starting
two lengths behind a fellow Tapit-sired maiden workmate, then
finishing about a half-length to the good at the wire before
continuing in front through a six-furlong gallop out of 1:15.80.

Next Start: GI Kentucky Derby, CD, Sept. 5
Equineline PPs. KY Derby Points: 30.
Sole Volante will be up against the grain of conventionality as
he points to the Derby as the lone remaining Top 12 contender
still based in Florida: he=s a gelding who generally trains over the
turf at Palm Meadows, he=s cutting it close for eligibility points
(currently 19th on the cutoff list with 30), and he=ll be sporting a
78-day layoff line by the time the first Saturday in September
rolls around. Yet the son of Karakontie had a solid-enough
early-career foundation of turf and dirt races (all at 7 1/2
furlongs or longer)--replete with Beyers in the 90s range (four
times)--to think that he should be able to bounce back off a
summer freshening better than some of his peers. Sole Volante
is a light-framed stayer who probably won=t require a ton of
work to get race ready over the next 4 1/2 weeks. Even though
his Breeders= Cup Mile-winning sire=s sweet spot was eight
furlongs, his dam=s only win in England was in a 14-furlong race,
so the 10-furlong Derby is theoretically within his scope.

This first-crop Honor Code colt ($150,000 KEESEP RNA)
currently rates as a Awork in progress@ type of sophomore, and
Saturday=s Runhappy Travers S. should provide a clearer read on
where he stands and where he=s headed, progression-wise. He
has yet to run a poor race (2-1-1 from four starts). But one of
those wins was a Parx maiden against only five rivals and the
other was in the Feb. 1 GIII Withers when he pressed a tiring
favored pacemaker into submission through moderate fractions.
Max ran third in the Belmont S. behind Tiz the Law, and that
effort was credible considering this inexperienced colt was
coming off a 4 1/2-month layoff. But now that five horses have
run back out of the Belmont, that race doesn=t look as strong on
paper as did six weeks ago: Four Belmont starters have come
back and lost next-out graded stakes, while one returned to win
an allowance at Colonial Downs.
BEHIND THE LENS: KURTIS COADYby T.D. Thornton
This is the fourth installment in a series highlighting racetrack
photographers.
Around 1960, a funeral director decided he=d had enough of
the cold Chicago winters, so he uprooted his family to Phoenix
to ply his trade in a warmer clime. Upon arrival, Jack Coady, Sr.
learned his Illinois mortician=s certification didn=t match
Arizona=s requirements, so he set out to look for another line of
work. He liked photography and caught on with the Arizona
Republic newspaper. On one of his very first assignments, he
was sent to shoot the races at Turf Paradise.
Jack Sr. enjoyed the racing so much that he accepted a
position as the Turf Paradise track photographer in 1962. As the
years went on, sons Jack Jr. and Jeff helped to expand the family
business, taking winner=s circle pictures, operating the race
timing, and later providing video services for numerous small
tracks across the Southwest.
By the 1990s, a third generation of Coady photographers
started getting involved. Jeff was based primarily in Texas, and
his sons, Shawn (now 44), and twins Kurtis and Kevin (now both
40) took turns behind the lens while also learning the bookkeeping
and how to move the whole operation from meet to meet.
In high school Kurtis wanted to be an architect. But then he
took an advertising design class that was progressive in 1996
because of its use of computerized technology to edit and lay
out photos. This sparked an interest in computer programming,
and even before Kurtis started pursuing an information systems
degree at the University of Texas, he began laying out for his
father a vision of how digital photography and transmitting
images over the internet was about to revolutionize the
industry.

American Pharoah in the 2015 Rebel Stakes | Coady
The Coadys bet big on that transition to digital, and the gamble
paid off in the form of landing more track contracts. The family
decided to get out of the timing and video end of the business to
concentrate on what it did best: shooting and supplying
racetrack photography for 32 venues across the country,
including all the Kentucky tracks and as the official photographer
of the GI Kentucky Derby.
Kurtis now splits the shooting with Shawn, and together they
oversee a staff of 50 Coady photographers who rotate from
track to track. Kevin handles the accounting while Jack Jr.
remains involved as an ownership partner. Jack Sr. (2008) and
Jeff (2013) have both passed away. But speaking from his home
and horse farm in Fisherville, Kentucky, Kurtis detailed how the
third-generation family business still resonates with their
founding spirit. An edited and condensed transcript follows.
TDN: Describe the AAh-ha!" moment when, as a kid in high
school, you convinced your dad to alter the fundamental way
the family had run its family business for close to four decades.
KC: At the time, we were all film. And that jump into digital, at
that time, was very expensive. The very first professional body
camera was the Nikon D1, and it was stupid expensive.
Especially if you consider that we owned all the film
equipment and had no overhead. But my father said, AWe need
to do this big. We need to go big.@ So we went full-steam ahead;
a huge investment for my father. But we went from a handful of
contracts to the point where we now serve 32 tracks. My father,
he=s second generation. I=m third generation. That was very
inspirational, because all we did day and night was work
together to make that transition.
Compared to other photographers, we=re very data-oriented.
So much so that everything we do is on one server out of
Phoenix that we built ourselves. It=s 120 terabytes. And every
Coady computer across the country is synched to it. So if I=m at
Keeneland and an owner walks into the office who just had a
horse win at Indiana Grand, no problem. I can print those
photos in two minutes. I programmed our first six generations of
websites along with my father and Shawn. On our current
website, we have 250,000 races available for sale. And some of
those races have 30 photos posted.
TDN: Coady Photography=s first all-digital meet was Delta
Downs in 2001. But it still took a few years for larger tracks to
embrace that format. Where and when was the big
breakthrough?

Prior to the 2016 Derby | Coady
KC: Our biggest, biggest break was getting the Oaklawn Park
contract in 2003. At the time, I always thought we we=re a
mom-and-pop business. And, at the time, I didn=t want to be a
photographer. I wanted to be an architect and go off and do my
own thing.
Then we went to Oaklawn and we had Azeri, Smarty Jones,
Curlin. All these big horses just kept hitting, year after year. And
as the racing got better for us and the bigger tracks started
noticing us, I kind of just realized that this was my calling and
what I was born to do. It was so amazing for us. You just felt so
alive. And that=s pretty much the same for my brothers. Shawn
has worked for the family company since he was 16 years old.
And Kevin=s actually a commercial pilot. He quit flying cargo
planes and working as a flight instructor to come work for the
company.
TDN: To what extent, if any, do emotions creep in now that
you=re routinely shooting elite-level horses at history-making
events?
KC: My first Derby [that Coady Photography had under contract]
was Nyquist in 2016. I wasn=t nervous, and neither were my
brothers or my staff. We were just meant to be there. We were
ready. And it didn=t hit me--at all--until the crowd started singing
AMy Old Kentucky Home.@ Then I had to turn away. I was a
wreck. I just started bawling. Because my dad missed it. When
my father died, it was before the Breeders= Cup at Keeneland.
He had shot the Breeders= Cup before, but never as the official
photographer of the host track. And that was hard, knowing he
had missed both his first official Derby and his first official
Breeders= Cup. Those were his gigs as much as mine.
TDN: What are some shots you=ve taken that stand out?
KC: The most important photo I ever took in my life was Justify
[at the 2018 Derby] with the rain coming down; the toughest
lighting. And everybody on my staff nailed it. You would have
thought it was full daylight outside. It was beautiful. My shot,
the shutter was perfect. I stopped the rain. The background with
the military personnel standing at attention. Everything in my
picture was perfect.
I also had a shot of American Pharoah in the [2015 GII] Rebel
S. at Oaklawn. It had rained really bad. A small puddle settled on
the track after they floated it. And he hit that puddle and broke
his shoe. So in my shot going to the finish, his shoe=s halfway off.
You can see it perfectly. And the way he stumbled just a little
bit, yet prevailed with that monstrous energy, I remember
thinking, AThis horse is going to be the only Triple Crown winner
I=ll see in my lifetime.@ And that was at the Rebel S. in March.
Then Justify came around the corner three years later to win his
Triple Crown, and that too was life-changing.
TDN: Lately there hasn=t been much energy at tracks because
fans either aren=t permitted or attendance is scaled back
because of COVID-19 restrictions. What was it like this spring
shooting big races in front of empty grandstands?
KC: For a while, we just had Oaklawn and Will Rogers going.
Normally, we would have had about 16 tracks running at that
time. I was shooting at Oaklawn, and it was tough. It was weird.
And all I could think of every day was, AI wish so many people
were here.@ So many great fans, people I=m friends with, horse
owners who couldn=t get in because of the lockdown. I was just
thinking how fortunate I was to be one of the ones actually
allowed on the grounds.
TDN: Your work takes you to far-flung tracks that most people
only see on the simulcast feed. Can you list a few that stick
with you because of either the background or the ambience?
KC: It=s so hard to nail them all. Shooting at Hialeah, very briefly
in 2001--the flamingoes and the absolute beauty of all of it. And
then you go out west and see a place like Sunland Park. It looks
like it=s in the middle of the desert. You watch it on video, but it
doesn=t do it justice with the mountains in the background.
Turf Paradise--the amount of work they put in that infield and
the condition of that turf course. And everything there is that
1960s architecture. It=s like going back in time.
Then you have the small tracks like Delta Downs. It=s just a
little bullring. But the feel is amazing--it just feels ALouisiana.@
The same with Evangeline Downs.

It=s neat because we get to see every bit of this country going
to all these tracks. And every track has an appeal. There are so
many things that people don=t get a chance to appreciate.
TDN: What advice do you have for photographers who aspire
to shoot horse races for a living?
KC: I think the best advice I could give is come shoot with us.
Drop me a note saying, AI just want to shoot for the weekend to
learn how to get into this.@ We=ll teach you the ins and outs. We
love it. We=re happy to help. We want to be there for the
community of horse racing photographers. And the same thing
goes for amateur photographers. If you can actually show to me
that you=re dedicated and I feel it, I=ll put you on the track right
next to me and we can shoot together.
TDN: What about words of wisdom for fans who just want to
get decent shots on their phone cameras from either the
stands or near the rail?
KC: Of all the cell phone shots I=ve ever seen, the shots that
really hit home are the shots where the crowd stands out. Get
that finish with the crowd in front of you. Show that excitement.
Show those hands in the air, the screaming, the cheering.
Everybody gets the shot of the horse. But get the shot of the
reason we=re running that horse--the crowd. Those are the best
shots.
Working in racing has always been a stressful occupation; a
roller-coaster of emotions, triumphs and tragedies, long hours
and travel. Add a global pandemic and unprecedented economic
worry, with many participants fearing for their health,
livelihoods and businesses, and the stress can become almost
overwhelming. It=s the sort of topic many people don=t like to
talk about, but we asked several industry participants to open
about what particular stresses they were feeling during these
very concerning times, and how they were dealing with them.

We are very lucky. My godfather spent 20 days in the ICU due
to COVID-19 and twice was presented DNR papers to sign, giving
him 30 minutes to improve his oxygen saturation levels prior to
intubating him.
He is home--still recovering, but home. He was diagnosed on
Mar. 16. We spoke on Mar. 18 and at that time, Ait was not as
bad as the flu, just more aggravating.@ On Mar. 20 he was
admitted to the hospital, Mar. 22 the ICU and discharged home
on Apr. 12. He is still recovering, but can now walk for 30
minutes. He played fullback for Coach Parcells at Vanderbilt, and
on Mar. 15, he was in the best shape of his life. We are lucky.
It is really hard. Like many, Beth and I both work full-time.

OVERNIGHT PURSE INCREASE AT LA DOWNS Officials at Harrahs Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, LA, have
announced an across-the-board purse increase of $1,500 per
race beginning Saturday, Aug. 8 and continuing through the end
of the meet Wednesday, Sept. 23.
AWe thank our local horsemen for their support since the live
racing season began on June 6,@ said David Heitzmann, director
of racing at Harrah=s Louisiana Downs. AThis has been a very
challenging year due to COVID-19, so we are pleased to reward
these hard working men and women with a purse increase of
$1,500 across the board.@
Track officials also announced the Louisiana Cup Day program,
which had been in limbo due to the ongoing pandemic. A half-
dozen stakes, each offering purse money of $40,000, will take
place Saturday, Sept. 19. Roger Heitzmann, Executive Director of
the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association (LTBA); Ed
Fenasci, Executive Director of the HBPA and David Heitzmann,
director of Racing at Harrah=s Louisiana Downs, have worked
diligently to put the annual stakes day back on the calendar. On
June 16, the LTBA Board of Directors voted to earmark $100,000
for Louisiana Cup Day.
AWe are grateful to LTBA for allocating the funds so we can run
Louisiana Cup Day once again this year,@ added Heitzmann. AThis
is a very important day for our breeders, horsemen, and of
course, the fans at Harrah=s Louisiana Downs.@
RRP=S MAKEOVER MARKETPLACE TRANSITIONS TO
VIRTUAL EVENT Owing to a grant from the ASCPA, the Retired Racehorse
Project will continue to produce the Makeover Marketplace as a
means to promote transitioned Thoroughbreds as premier sport
horse prospects online.
The ASPCA Makeover Marketplace catalog will once again be
offered in print as well as digitally. Sign-ups are now open to
receive the catalog, which will be printed in the Fall 2020 issue
of Off-Track Thoroughbred Magazine.
AThe ASPCA Makeover Marketplace has become one of the
country=s premier horse shopping and adoption opportunities
for equestrians looking for well-started sport horse prospects,@
said Jen Roytz, Executive Director of the RRP.
ATraditionally, horse shopping includes extensive travel, often
going to multiple farms in different states in order to consider
horses, but changing mandates and travel restrictions during the
pandemic are limiting those opportunities. The Marketplace lets
you browse from the comfort of your couch and peruse dozens
of photos, videos and descriptions of equine athletes for
adoption or sale who have had the proper care, nutrition and
training to make a successful transition to a competitive or

Flat Out Speed winning the July 5 GIII Iowa Oaks | Coady

8-2, 3yo/up, f/m, 6f, 1:10.48, ft.
FLAT OUT SPEED (f, 3, Flat Out--Blue Gallina, by Street Sense)
kicked off her career with a trio of wins over this track, including
a front-running score in the Prairie Gold Lassie S. and the Iowa
Sorority S. against fellow Iowa breds. Sixth in her seasonal
reappearance in Oaklawn=s Purple Mountain S. in April, the dark
bay rebounded in her return to Prairie Meadows to take the
state-bred Bob Bryant S. and the GIII Iowa Oaks July 5. Sent to
her customary place in front early, the 2-5 choice increased her
advantage at every call and was five-lengths clear of Konza
Kandy (Twirling Candy) at the line. Blue Gallina is also
represented by a juvenile colt by Dominus and a filly foal by Not
This Time. She was bred to Good Samaritan earlier this season.

SUNSHINE CITY (f, 2, Creative Cause--Object, by War Front)
won first out winner against $25,000 maidens over the
Gulfstream dirt Apr. 30 before finishing ninth--beaten five

second behind opening splits of :22.41 and :45.85, the 1-2
choice headed that rival in the lane and drew clear to score by
1 3/4 lengths over the closing Baytown Bear (Upstart). Object
foaled a full-brother to Sunshine City in 2019 followed by an
Exaggerator filly this term. Object is a granddaughter of GSW &
GISP Wild Applause (Northern Dancer), the dam of GISW
