Residents of Mogap-pair East and West are complaining

about the menace posed by drunkards in the neigh-bourhood. Of late there have been increasing num-ber of cases of men, who are sloshed, lying on the ground in public places or inebriated men hurling abuses at passersby.

At many of the liquor outlets run by the Tamil

Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) with attached bars, one could find hundreds of men milling around for their quota for liquor. After consuming liquor in the bars, some of them in high ‘spirits’ end up abusing people around or end up dirtying public places.

“I was once waiting for the bus at night when I found a drunkard creating a ruckus at the bus stop. He was lying on the wait-

ing area and loudly abusing everyone and we could not do any-thing about it. Seriously, the police should take action against such peo-ple who create nuisance in public areas,” said Lokesh, a college stu-dent and resident of Collector Nagar.

Women complain that at some places they find it very difficult to walk because of the presence of drunkards.

“Many of these wine shops are located in busy commercial ar-eas. We are unable to go out and make household purchases or even to a restaurant to eat as often we en-counter drunkards on the way. The other day, I wanted to urgently buy some provisions and went to a shop located on School Road in Mogappair East. Just as I was about to reach the shop, I found two drunkards aimlessly roaming around and dirtying the place. I had no choice but to return,” said Yasmin

Hamid, a housewife and resident of School Road.

Often sloshed men are found lying on the ground outside banks, ATMs, bus stops and even schools making it difficult for peo-ple to access these facili-ties. “The police must make regular rounds in the neighbourhood and en-sure that alcoholics who are creating a ruckus or lying on the ground are removed. That is the only way the members of the public could feel secure about the neighbour-hood,” suggested Premku-mar, who was seen shop-ping on Kambar Salai in Mogappair West.

Senior c i t izens in Mogappair have to travel till Anna Nagar West ter-minus to avail free travel coupons ever y three months despite the MTC opening Mogappair East ane West termini. The se-nior citizens making a bee-line to the bus terminus to avail bus coupons in the month of January is a com-mon sight. Elders in Mogappair feel that to commute is a major prob-lem. There is no straight bus from Mogappair to Anna Nagar West and one has to switch two modes of transport to reach the des-tination and collect the coupons. More over with no separate queue for se-nior citizens, they are forced to wait along with others who come to collect various bus passes. Seniors feel that these coupons should be made available at any depot and that they are eligible to travel across the city.

From a time when it was one of the busiest of the depots of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), the Anna Nagar West Bus Depot has now been reduced to a point where only buses on two routes are operated.

Bus commuters from the neighbourhood say that now buses are operated on

just two routes i.e. Route 7F (Anna Nagar West to Broadway) and Route 24A (Anna Nagar West to Vive-kanda House or Ice House). Together only eight services are operated on a day on these two routes. Old timers in the neighbourhood said that in the good old days when people would largely com-mute by bus and use an auto rickshaw once in a

blue moon, many route buses were operated from the Anna Nagar West De-pot. These included buses on the Route 47A (Anna Nagar West to Adyar) and Route 27E, 27R, 27J (Anna Nagar West to Triplicane and Anna Square).

“Those were not olden days. I remember even till the early part of this mil-lennium people in the neighbourhood would wait

these services were either withdrawn or diverted to other depots including the Mogappair East and West depots. “It is not as if there is no patronage for bus services but just that the MTC does not find it prof-itable to operate on these routes,” he added. Inqui-

ries revealed that even in the existing two routes until a couple of years ago 12 services were operated on a daily basis. Now four services have been with-drawn. The MTC should ideally operate buses on certain routes where share autos are minting money.
