TheMoffatSubseaStabConnectorisacompact,lightandcosteffectiveconnectorthatallowsahosetobe

connected /disconnected subsea. Theproducthasbeen inservice since1995andhasbeen refinedand

developed up until the present day as the demands of the subsea market have increased. It is now

recognisedbymanyoperatorsas the 'bestofbreed' industry standard item for subseapigging, chemical

injection,gasinjection,floodingandventingoperations.

EaseOfUse Themaleandfemalecomponentsofthestabconnectorareeasytoassembleinservice. All

thatisrequiredisfortheROVtoalignthemalewiththereceptacleandpush. Carefullyshapedlowfriction

guides on the two components correct any inaccuracies in the alignment of the initial makeup as the

connectionismade.

Pressure Balanced Design The seal arrangement of the connector is such that all pressure forces are

retainedinthebodyofthemale/femalecomponents. Nonetforceactsalongtheaxisofthestaboronthe

retaining mechanism. This means that in the case of an emergency the male stab connector can be

disconnectedunderpressure.

RotatingHandleandCollarThemalestabhandleisfittedwitharotatingcollar. Thecollarallowsthestab

bodytorotatethroughafull360independentofthehandle. ThisallowstheROVtomanipulatethemale

stabwhilstanytorsioninthehoseplaysoutduringdeployment.

'J'SlotLockingMechanismAfterinsertioninthefemalereceptaclethemalestabhandlecanberotated30

insidea'J'

Slot

machined

into

the

cap

of

the

female

receptacle.

This

serves

two

purposes:

1)

it

shows

visually that thestab is locatedcorrectly inside the female receptacleand2)providesaphysical restraint

againstanyaxialforceonthehose. Astheassemblyispressurebalancedtherearenoforcesonthe'J'slot

lockingmechanismduetopressure.

EaseOfMaintenanceTheassemblyisincrediblyrobustandduetothesimpleminimalmovingpartdesign

it requires very littlemaintenance. Themale stab sealsdooccasionallyneed replacing. This isa simple

operationandMoffatcanprovidesparesealsandchangetoolstocarryouttheprocedure.

ManyConfigurationOptionsTheMoffatSubseaStabConnectorhasbeendeployed worldwideformany

differentuses. Assuchmanystandardconfigurationsarealreadypossible;someofwhichareshownwithin

thisdatasheet.

Double Sided Solution It is sometimesnotpossible topredict theorientationof the female receptacle

when it is subsea (e.g.duringpipelayoperations). If this isa concernand there isapossibility that the

female receptaclemaybe inaccessible then it isnecessary touseadoublesided female receptacle. This

receptacleissymmetricalandallowsthemalestabtoenterfromeitherside.

SurplussingValve Solution Male stabs can be fitted with a Moffat Surplussing Valve. This option is

typicallyused topreventhose collapsedue toexternal seawaterpressure fordeepwateroperations. A

surplussingvalveisacheckvalvethatsealsinonedirectionandallowsflowafterapredeterminedcracking

pressurein

the

other.

This

allows

ahose

to

be

deployed

with

an

internal

pressure

applied

to

balance

the

externalhydrostaticpressure. Duringoperationthepressureisraisedbeyondthecrackingpressureandthe

valvewillopenandallowflow. Ifthepressuredropsbelowthecrackingpressurethevalveclosestoprotect

thehose.

ForgedFemaleReceptacle Whereweldedoutletconnectionsarenotallowedbyprojectspecificationitis

possibletoprovidethefemalereceptacle&outletconnectionmachinedfromasingleforgingofthechosen

Receptacle

Mounting

Femalereceptaclesshouldbesupportedtopreventflexingofmatingpipeworkduringstabbingoperations.

Forthispurposefemalereceptaclescanbeprovidedwithmountingflanges. Ifthisisnotnecessary(i.e.the

femalereceptacleissupportedinsomeothermanner),themountingflangecanbeomitted.

Earthing

Device

In longterm installationswhereablindstab istobepermanently inserted intothefemalereceptacle it is

oftennecessarytoensureelectricalcontinuitytotheblindsothatitisprotectedbythecathodicprotection

system. Inthiscase, it ispossibletosupplythe femalereceptaclecompletewithaspringloadedearthing

contactpointtoensurecontinuity.

TestReceptacle

Toallowthecompletehoseassemblytobetestedtopsidepriortodeploymentitisoftennecessarytousea

dedicated female test receptacle. Thesecanbe supplied completewithconvenientpressure tapings (i.e.

NPT,BSPorAutoclave)tomatchupwithtestequipmentandsupportfeetforinstallationondeck.

Blind stabs are rated to the same working pressure as the equivalent male stab and are often used for

hydrotest.They

can

be

left

in

place

for

long

term

emersion

in

order

to

protect

the

female

receptacle

and

/

ortoactasanadditional'block'inthesubseasystem.

Sacrificial

Pressure

Relief

Device

Where it is thought possible that internal

pressuremaybuildupbehindtheblindstabit

is possible to fit a sacrificial pressure relief

device to allow pressure to be dissipated

without having to remove the whole stab.

This device is cut by the ROV and it allows

pressure

from

the

pipework

to

be

more

safely

vented. This can be provided as a hose

connection (as shown) or for deepwater

operation as a thin blind pipe. A range of

material options are possible depending on

desiredlengthofservice.

RetainingStrap

Toprevent theROVaccidentallydropping theblind stab they canbe supplied completewith a retaining

strapthatfixestheblindtothefemalereceptacle. Thisstrapcanalsobeprovidedinconductivematerialsto

doubleasanearthingpathforcathodicprotection.

DummyPlug(non-pressureretaining)

A dummy plug is a simple plastic stab that fits inside the female receptacle. It can be used during

deploymentorduring longtermemersion toprovideaneffectivemeansofpreventingdebrisandmarine

growthenteringthefemalereceptacle. Dummyplugsareavailableforallsizesoffemalereceptacleandina

range of materials depending on the service required. As for blind stabs they can be provided with a

retainingstrap

to

prevent

against

accidental

drop

and

to

provide

electrical

continuity

to

the

metal

handle

if

required.

SealKit&ChangeTool

The stab assembly requires very little maintenance

howeverthemale&blindstabsealsdooccasionally

need replacing. It is very important that this

operation is carried out using the dedicated seal

change tool for the stab and using procedures

providedbyMoffat. Thisensures that the sealsare

installedcorrectly

in

their

grooves

and

are

sized

correctly. Training for stab operators can be

providedatourworks.

ProtectionSleeve

Protectionsleevescanbeprovidedtoprotectmale/blindstabsealswhilstawaitingdeploymentorduring

transit. Thisisarigidplasticcoverthatprotectsthesealsandhelpskeepthemcorrectlysized. Thesleeve

shouldberemovedpriortodeployment.

Parking

Receptacles

In order to assist with manipulation of stabs during operation it is

oftennecessarytoprovideaplacetotemporarilystoreonestab(e.g.

ablindstab)whilstanotherisinserted intothefemalereceptacle. A

Parking receptacle can be provided for this purpose. Parking

receptaclesareplasticcomponentsthatmatchtheboreofthefemale

receptacleandareprovidedwithaconvenientmountingflange.

FlowData

Theflowratetodifferentialpressure(DP)curvesforthevarioussizehotstabassembliesareshown inthe

chartsbelow. Thesecurveshavebeenderivedbyphysicalflowtestingoftheequipmentandverifiedusing

computational fluidmechanics (CFD). The charts show theexpected flowagainstpressuredrop for sea

water.Curves
