Period: Semester 2Occurence: ACoordinator:Mark Scheme: PGT Mark Scheme

Academic Year: 2016/7Module Level: PostgraduateScheme: PGDepartment: Media and CommunicationCredits: 30

Intended Learning OutcomesThe module is designed to prepare students for dissertation and to connect backwards to MS7004 (semester one ResearchMethods and Management module) and to develop specific further applied skills. This new module will also embed researchethics as a regular and automatic activity, providing futher embedded research ethic training on the route to final dissertationstudy. As such, the content of the module is based on application of theory and methods and students will be prepared fordissertation study with a focus on the development of their own research project design.

Students would, by the end of the module: 1.Be able to formulate research questions, conceptualise research problems and evaluate research design, enabling them todesign and analyse the strengths and weaknesses of a research project design.2.Be able to select, access resources and assess the qualities of literature upon a specific methodology.3.Know how to administer and analyse and apply a range of methods4. Be able to critically examine the contribution of a range of approaches to methods to their own research project(dissertation) including ethical considerations.

Teaching and Learning MethodsLectures, seminars will be utilised for face to face contact. Students' learning will be also be guided by engaging with weeklyonline (Blackboard) discussion exercises learning will be maintained outside of class. This also provides a formative space inwhich students can try out ideas. Lecturers will read and respond to ideas and draw out aspects which will then projectforward into the seminars ensuring that all components of the module are connected facilitating a depth of engagment.Seminars will include group work, pair work and close work with methodology theory and practice.

Futher to this, students reading will be guided and extra online or email communications used for further support to studentteaching and learning. Students will have access to tutorials during standard office hours. If multiple parallel seminars areheld, consistency of content will be assured by the Module Leader.

Assessment MethodsThree types of assessment: weekly online participation in activities directly connected to in-class activities and researchdesign critique (10%); this will produce a bridge between formative activity and summative assessment. In addition, one 2000word research design and critique (50%) and annotated bibliography (40%) will be used to ensure links are made goingforward to coming dissertation study.

Intended Learning OutcomesThe module aims to provide students with a range of skills and knowledge required at Masters level in social science subjectsfor quantitative and qualitative research design, data collection, management and analysis. The module seeks to enablestudents to become familiar with the epistemological and practical differences between diverse forms of research, providingguidance as to the appropriateness of certain methodologies in differing research scenarios.

On completion of this module, students will have demonstrated an awareness of:

a) the nature of research and the research processb) basic concepts widely used in the research processc) the ways research paradigms and epistemologies impact researchb) the principles of research ethics as they apply to media and communication research contextsd) how to collect, manage, analyse and interpret social science research data

Teaching and Learning MethodsLectures, workshops

Assessment MethodsRESEARCH REFLECTION REPORT: Students will be asked to provide short answers to a number of questions about thenature of research, research processes, design and ethics. The assignment is worth 35% of the final mark and is limited to1,000 words.

RESEARCH DESIGN EXERCISE

NB: Students studying for the MA Journalism Studies will be required to design and conduct an interview with a practicingjournalist. Students must devise interview questions that will elicit details about the professional history of the journalist andtheir thoughts and opinions on the professionalism and the professional values that shape the work of journalists in theirindustry. In the process, they will also analyse the interview data generated and reflect on the benefits and drawbacks of theinterview method and the potential ethical implications that arise from research of this type. The assignment is worth 65% ofthe students' final mark and is limited to 2,500 words.
