Unit aim and purpose

This unit provides learners with an opportunity to develop their project management and research skills by developing a project where they plan and implement a new product, service or process.

Unit introduction

Unit 17: Project Development and Implementation for Strategic ManagersUnit code: H/602/2425, QCF Level 7: BTEC Professional, Credit value: 20

The purpose of this unit is to provide learners with an opportunity to integrate all the learning from the programme by developing a project in which they plan and implement a new product, service or process.

This unit could follow on from Unit 16: Research Methods for Strategic Managers, where a research question is formulated and researched. The fact that there are two units on research and project development and implementation recognises the scale of work that is required to develop and implement a sound project. Learners can take either unit without the other, but may find it necessary to start with Unit 16 if they have no experience of research methodology.

As the rate of change escalates, it is important for organisations to not just hold their place in the market but to plan to move ahead. This unit recognises the importance for managers to have project management skills and expertise to enable this to happen. In effect, this unit requires managers to plan and implement a new product, service or process.

Learners need to take a full and active role in all aspects of the project and the selection of an appropriate management issue is crucial to success. Learners will cover a full range of management activities and roles including resource and people management and implementation of change. The result needs to be a substantial report of a style appropriate for consideration by senior management.

Delivery of module

All the outcomes lend themselves to flexible delivery. Formal teaching sessions could have input from the tutor to identify some of the theoretical material but learners can work individually researching and gathering information about their projects. Research, investigation, case studies and discussions all offer involving approaches to learning. Using senior managers from organizations as guest speakers provides a practical insight into the management of business.

The choice of the project itself is the crucial factor for success in this unit and considerable attention needs to be paid to learners’ choice of project. They need to take an active part, if not the lead. The integration of learning from across the programme is the basis of this unit so ensuring that the project will draw on other units is essential.

While it is possible for the project to be based on a case study, if there is no possible alternative, a real workplace issue is much more valuable as a learning opportunity. Learners currently not in employment, or in employment where such project work is not available, could be seconded to an organisation where a suitable project can be agreed.

This unit needs little teaching in-put, as such, but does need ongoing one-to-one supervision by a suitable project supervisor, as well as opportunities for regular discussion with appropriate workplace personnel.

Assessment

In order to pass this unit, learners must achieve all the criteria. Learners will also provide

For AC1.1, 1.2 and 1.3, learners will analyse the factors that contribute to the process of project selection then develop outline project specifications followed by the production of a specification for an agreed project to implement a new product, service or process. There needs to be a thorough analysis of the relevant factors together with suggested outline specifications, from which one is selected and agreed with the tutor, with reasons for final choice being given.

For AC2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5, learners have to produce a project plan for an agreed project, match appropriate resources to the project, cost all resources required for implementation and agree timescales for management and implementation of the plan and an appropriate strategy. There will be detailed planning evident with appropriate resources selected and costed and evidence of a workable strategy.

For AC3.1, 3.2 and 3.3, learners have to implement a project in accordance with an agreed specification then develop appropriate measures to monitor and evaluate progress and outcomes and finally monitor the implementation of the project. Implementation will matchthe planning and specification. There will be appropriate measures in place to monitor and evaluate progress and evidence of detailed monitoring.

For AC4.1, 4.2 and 4.3, learners have to analyse the outcomes of a project in terms of the original project specification then evaluate the outcomes of a project making justified recommendations for improvements to the project. There will be a professional and critical analysis and evaluation of the project outcomes in relation to the specification together with justified recommendations.

For AC5.1 and 5.2, learners have to produce a report of all project procedures used, and present the outcomes of the project to an audience using an agreed format and appropriate media. The written report will be individual and in an appropriate format and the verbal presentation will be completed in a professional manner appropriate to the audience.

It is possible to assess work orally with learners explaining and describing things to the assessor in discussion or in a presentation. If oral assessments are used then the work must be directly attributable to the individual learner, and needs in this unit to be backed up by a written report. The assessor must provide a signed statement that includes detail of the oral evidence presented that is aligned to the criteria.

Specification for Assessment

Students can use their own workplaces as a base for much of the assessment of the unit. However, if you are not in any suitable organisation, then other strategies may have to be used such as a work placement, a detailed investigation of an organisation, or the use of suitable case study material.

For this unit, where possible, learners should be using information, examples and research which involve their own organisations or those with which they are familiar. Learners will produce evidence of research into different approaches to forecasting, project appraisal and interpretation of summarised financial information as to cost control, participation in budgeting and capital budgeting processes, and analysis of specific approaches to cost reduction and cost management, and need to show competence in every learning outcome as they require the learner to be able to the use the techniques and interpretation of appraisal for budgeting.

Guidance & Policies for Assignment Submission

You must take this as an individual assignment. All parts of the assessment must be presented in a business style report, word processed with full citation and references using Harvard System. Each report should meet the required standard and word count set by the lecturer. The word count will exclude the following: Title Page, Tables, Diagrams and Appendices.

We strongly advice students to follow the structure below:

The preferred format by Guildhall College is Arial 12 or Times New Roman 12. An assignment cover sheet must be attached with every submitted assignment. These ar

e available in the college. All assignments must have clear headings and sub-headings where necessary. Contents page must be attached.(If applicable) Each assignment is given a guide word limit and there is a tolerance of ±10% only. You s

hould state the number of words on the title page of your assignment. The quality of the work must be maintained.

When submitting assignments students must assure they have the following:1. Stapler2. Plastic covers (Members of staff will not be providing any of the mentioned)3. Envelopes4. CDs

Assignments should be submitted in accordance with the submission deadline(s), mentioned on the assignment brief.

Assessment

The report will be assessed on the basis of:

Presentation and structure Content Application of concepts and theories References (variety and relevance) Critical thinking and analytical ability Students must pass all individual tasks and pass pointers provided in the assignmen

t brief in order to pass the entire unit.

Submission format

Students are not to submit any assignments to the lecturer – assignments can be submitted to Ms Lena or any other person authorised by the college.

Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to sign and date the assignment submission form at the time of submission. We advice students to use Viper Program in order to estimate the Plagiarism percentage. Students must make sure to retain a copy of the submission proof sig

ned and dated as an evidence for the submission. Students should send an electronic copy of their assignments (Including the Plagiarism Report) to [email protected]

If a student fails to send the soft copy to the above mentioned email address, college reserves the right to refuse the marking of that particular assignment.

When sending an electronic copy to the email address, please supply the following information in the subject box in the order provided below:

Edexcel Registration Number, First Name, Last Name, Unit Number, Lecturer name.

Late submission of the assignment

At Guildhall we discourage the practice of late submissions. If due to any reason the student fails to submit the assignment on time or by the due date, he/she will be required to pay £25 per assignment submitted late.

The late fee can be reclaimed later by the student by completing an extenuating circumstances form, available with the Programme Admin staff. The late fee will only be repaid if the student can provide medical evidence or other evidence preventing him/her from submitting the assignment on time.

In all cases, assignments can only be accepted with a late fee up to one week i.e. 5 working days from the respective due date.

Non-submission of the assignment

If the student fails to submit the assignment even after one week after the assignment due date, the assignment will be considered as ‘Not Submitted’ and will lead the respective unit as ‘Failed’. In case a re-submission is allowed for non-submission cases, a fine of £75 per assignment shall be applied.

Re-submission of assignment

Students are able to receive feedback from the lecturer and take guidance about the areas of weakness so that the student is able to build upon the work of the first submission. The feedback supports the student in the management of re-submissions as well as the successful completion of the assessment. Please note that the assignments can only be re-submitted once. Such cases will be subject of a £25 fee.

If after re-submission the assignment is not up to the required standard, the assignment shall be graded as failed eventually resulting in the relevant unit to be taken all over again and full fee to be paid for that unit.

Lecturers are not permitted to change deadlines unless discussed.

Extensions are only granted for documented medical reasons or other documented unavoidable serious interruptions relevant to your ability to study. Extensions are not granted due to an inability to organise your time or work practices. Should there be extra ordinary circumstances; the college should be made aware of these in writing. If disallowed or the student fails to inform the college in time, the college reserves the right not to accept / mark the assignment.

Failed Units

If due to any reason a unit is graded as ‘Failed’ by the assessor, the student has to take the whole unit all over again by attending the full classes for that unit and paying additional tuition fee for that unit.

Plagiarism and Collusion

Plagiarism occurs when someone copies or reproduces another person’s words or ideas (journal articles, text books, web material or other student’s work) and presents them as their own with no proper acknowledgement via citation and referencing.

Collusion is when two students work together and submit an individual assessment that is not entirely their own work. All are forms of cheating and will be treated with severe penalties.

To ensure that you are not guilty of plagiarism, you must always declare all sources from which you have obtained material or ideas by citation in the text and an associated reference list at the end of your work. If unfair means are found, assignment shall be failed leading the entire unit to be taken again.

All assignments involving plagiarism and collusion shall be referred to the assessment board who will then decide about all such cases. Until a decision is reached by the board, ‘unfair means’ or ‘UFM’ shall be recorded as a grade.

Other Unfair Means

Students sometimes try to submit incomplete assignments i.e. less than 60 percent of the pass pointers attempted or irrelevant assignment or someone else work just to get some more time to complete their assignments and submit later during re-submission time allowed by the college.

All such practices will be dealt with severe punishment and shall be forwarded to the assessment board. Until a decision is reached by the board, ‘unfair means’ or ‘UFM’ shall be recorded as a grade. It is the prerogative of the Programme leader to decide which cases to be classed as UFM.

In case a re-submission is allowed for UFM cases, a fine of £75 per assignment shall be applied.
