What is STIGMA?

This refers to the wayindividual or groups feel

when they experiencejudgments, ridicule,isolation and blame amongothers on the basis of their

HIV status. It is a result of discrediting

individuals in the eye ofothers.

What is STIGMA? In school alone, process of

stigmatization is widely experiencedby many children by simply beingpicked-on (panunukso) which is an

end result of bullying by many. Children, commonly unsupervised by

their teachers are already leading acomplicated school life because ofthese negative experiences brought bytheir classmates.

Cases of drop outs, emotionaldisturbance, parent-child conflicts,social withdrawal and many otherswere some of the disturbing effect thatmany of us fail to recognize.

What is STIGMA? Stigma can lead to depression,

withdrawal and feeling ofworthless. Some common things

people do that stigmatize thoseliving with HIV are; Naming names or calling them

names Denying them of their

opportunities and rights Not giving them care andsupport

What is DISCRIMINATION? This is when individuals or

groups are being treated

unfairly. It occurs when adistinction is made against aperson thats results in hisor her being treated unfairly

and unjustly on the basis oftheir belonging, orperceived to belong to aparticular group.

Because of the stigma associated withHIV/AIDS, and the discrimination that mayfollow from this, the rights of people living withHIV/AIDS and their families are frequentlyviolated.

HIV/AIDS have been: Segregate in schools and hospitals

Refused employment Denied to right to marry Denied for VISAS or entry

permission Rejected by their communities KILLED

Each example above offers anillustration of individual andsocial stigma being acted uponand, as a result, discriminationtaking place.

What is DISCRIMINATION? Stigma and discrimination also has

lot to do with the increasing numberof cases of HIV/AIDS.

This action leads many people livingwith HIV/AIDS go in hide, it forbidsthem for medical check-up due tothe fear that medical facilities will

not accept them or will reject them.As a result, many of them die alonewithout being glimpsed by caringindividuals who are very willing toattend to their needs.

What is DISCRIMINATION? Because of stigma, people who think

they are infected or carrying thevirus will just ignore the need for

blood screening test and as a result,this group of people may infectothers either by sharing injectabledrugs or unprotected sexualactivities.

HIV/AIDS will never be solved bysymposium, pep talks and other infodissemination without uprooting thefear of many, stigma will kill anycaring person and discriminationwill only lead many in chaos.

both leading to violation on therights of every people. Somehuman rights relevant toHIV/AIDS are; The right to non discrimination The right to work The right to education The right to information

The right to privacy The right to receive treatment The right to be protected against

cruel, inhuman or degradingtreatment or punishment

our role to guide others,
