The Dos and Don'ts of Tutor/Tutee Relationships

CHOOSE YOUR ADVENTURE!

Page 12: Module 10: ETHICS

Jane is a veteran tutor in the Success Center. She is meeting a tutee to help him work through the end of chapter questions for microeconomics.

When the tutee arrives, he sits down with 2 notebooks. One notebook belongs to a friend that is in the same class as the tutee.

Before they begin, the tutee states that he already has the answers to the questions. He begins to copy the answers from his friend’s notebook.

JANE’S STORY

Page 13: Module 10: ETHICS

What should Jane do?*CLICK YOUR ANSWER BELOW*

Jane should leave the tuteeto copy the answers and go workon her own school work.

Jane should review the answersbefore the tutee copy’s the answersas his own.

Jane should tell the tutee that she cannot be apart of this. It is dishonest and if he continues she will need to report him to her supervisor.

Page 14: Module 10: ETHICS

Sure Jane’s school work is just as important, but…

The tutor’s ultimate tutoring goal is for the tutee to be a better learner and to teach the tutee ways to do a better job.

Jane should..

Page 15: Module 10: ETHICS

Making sure that the answer’s are correct is smart to do before copying answers but…..

Aiding, abetting, or attempting to commit an act or action that would constitute academic dishonesty is plagiarism and a violation of procedures.

Jane should….

Page 16: Module 10: ETHICS

YES!

Jane should tell the tutee that she can not be a

part of academic dishonesty. Aiding, abetting, or

attempting to commit an act or action that would

constitute academic dishonesty is plagiarism and

a violation of procedures.

Jack is a new tutor in the Success Center. He is meeting a tutee to help her study for an Algebra exam.

When the tutee arrives, she is crying. She explains that she has to get a B on this test or she will fail the class. If she fails the class she loses her scholarship and will have no other way to pay for her education.

Jack’s Story

Page 18: Module 10: ETHICS

What should Jack do?*CLICK YOUR ANSWER BELOW*

Tell the tutee that he can acquire the answer key for the Algebra exam, for a price.

Tell the tutee to suck it up; it is her fault that she has failed the other exams and she doesn’t deserve to continue school anyways. You don’t have time for this.

Be positive. Tell the tutee that she can do this and that they will take it one problem at a time to get her prepared for this exam.

Page 19: Module 10: ETHICS

Sure, tutors could always use extra money by helping someone out but….

Possessing, buying, selling, obtaining, giving, or using a copy of any unauthorized materials intended to be used as or in the preparation of a quiz or examination is academic dishonesty.

Jack should….

Page 20: Module 10: ETHICS

Sure it makes sense to put the tutee in her place. After all we are all responsible for our actions but…

A tutor must have respect for the tutee’s personal dignity and must accept that individual without judgment.

Jack should …

Page 21: Module 10: ETHICS

Yes!

Jack should be positive! A tutor’s major motivation is building the tutee’s self-

confidence. Tutors respect the tutee’s personal dignity and accepts that individual without

judgment.

Page 22: Module 10: ETHICS

Janet has been a tutor for 4 months. She is meeting a tutee to help her with a research paper for Business Ethics.

The tutee arrives with her two children. She has the information to Janet and says that she can’t stay; she doesn’t have time to work on this research paper because of her kids.

She asks Janet to write the research paper for her and she will pick it up in a couple days.

Janet’s Story

Page 23: Module 10: ETHICS

What should Janet do?*CLICK YOUR ANSWER BELOW*

Tell the tutee that she will do it. She sees that the mother is having a hard time and wants to help out.

Explain to the tutee that this is considered Plagiarism and she will not be a part of it.

Tell the tutee that she can just use your research paper from that class 2 years ago. The professor won’t remember!

Page 24: Module 10: ETHICS

It is understandable to be kind, caring, and compassionate to those who are having difficulty but…

Tutor’s understand that the tutor’s role is never to do the tutee’s work.

Janet should…..

Page 25: Module 10: ETHICS

Yes!

Knowingly permitting one’s work to be submitted by another person as if it were the submitter's original work is Plagiarism and a

violation of procedures prescribed to protect the integrity of an assignment.

Page 26: Module 10: ETHICS

Sure you just saved yourself, and the tutee, some time by giving her a 2 year old research paper for the same class but…

Submitting an assignment purporting to be the student’s original work that has been wholly or partly created by another person is plagiarism and a violation of procedures prescribed to protect that integrity of an assignment.

Janet should…

Page 27: Module 10: ETHICS

Let’s Review!

The bottom line:

Academic Dishonesty by a student, whether they

are the performer or just an accomplice, is a

violation of procedures that protect the integrity of

quizzes, examinations, and assignments.
