RUD round steel chains have been successfully

used for decades for various tasks in fossil-firedpower plants. In each case, our specialists selectfrom RUD's flexible modular components theoptimum system for the particular conveyingapplication. The result is long-lasting, low-maintenance conveyor systems, which areperforming successfully around the world underconditions which place the highest demands onwear-resistance and mechanical strength. The illustrations are intended to show howand where this is done.

Two wet de-asher systems arecurrently in worldwide use:

1. Flushing chamber de-ashersand2. Drag-chain wet de-ashersalso known as submergedscraper conveyors (SSC)

Drag-chain wet de-ashers (submergedscraper conveyors) are the mostfrequently used systems, flushingchamber de-ashers are now rarelyplanned in new power plants.Drag-chain wet de-ashers (SSC)are preferred on account of theireasier maintenance.

RUD Chains has been working very

closely with well-known manufactu-rers of submerged scraper conveyors(SSC) since this technology wasdeveloped, and also maintainsexcellent contacts with end users. This of course has a positive effecton the success of further develop-ments of our products for this fieldof application. A good example isour new two-part attachment(Duomount) which can be mountedin the taut chain strand. It is presented for the first timehere in this brochure.Conveying capacities of between5 and 50 tonnes per hour (t/h) areachieved, depending on the angleof the inclined part of the conveyor.Throughputs of 50 t/h are achievedwith a conveyor trough width of2500mm. Whereas high ratio geared

motor drives were mainly used inthe past, nowadays variable speedelectromechanical or hydraulic drivesare generally preferred. The normalconveying speeds lie between 0.01and 0.05m/s, they very seldomexceed 0.07 m/s.

Typical structure of a submerged scraper conveyor (SSC)

RUD components form the heartof the SSC: the conveyor chain, thechain connectors, the drive wheels, guide wheels, and the scraperswith their attachments. Tootheddrive sprockets which locate inter-nally on the chain are mainly usedin submerged scraper conveyor(SSC). Occasionally, pocketed type

sprockets are also used.We shall be pleased to assist youin selecting the optimum systemfor your conveying task.

A comparison between the RUDmodular system and the chain endand shackle system used under thesame plant parameters yields thefollowing result:

An SSC incorporating the RUDmodular system can be operatedwith lower energy consumption, uniform low wear characteristicsallow longer planned maintenanceintervals. An SSC operating undercomparable plant conditions withround steel chains according toDIN 22252 generally wears appro-ximately three times faster than

RUD special steel grade roundsteel chains. Multiple link moun-ting gives improved scraper barstability.

RUD also offers the advantage of using attachments that do nothave to transfer the tensile forces in the chain strand. This eliminates a disadvantageous double function.

Hardening curves across the surface zones in the chain links

RUD-chainshave outstanding core

toughness, which gives them highbreaking strength and resistance tobrittle fracture.Although the breaking strength ofround steel chains generally decrea-ses with increasing depth of case-hardening,RUD chainsare charac-terized by a very high resistance towear coupled with unusually highbreaking strength and toughness. As the magnitude and ratio of the

mechanical and tribological stresseson the chain is plant-specific, RUDoffers special steel grade chains andcomponents with diverse combinati-ons of wear resistance and breakingstrength.

AllRUDspecial steel grade chains

and components haveextraordina-rily high resistance to vibration, which makes a decisive contributionto preventing the occurrence of fati-gue fractures during operation. Therobustness of the chains and othercomponents are matched to eachother and to the operational stres-ses.

Material

High-grade constructional steelswith a high degree of purity, finegrain and insusceptibility to aging,Cr, CrNi or CrNiMo alloyed.

Particular attention is given not only

to the design of the drive wheels butalso to that of the guide wheels, astheir reliable working is an impor-tant factor in the service life of thechain equipment.

Two types of guide wheels are usedin SSC de-ashers:

1. Guide and tensioning wheels

outside the water bath in theempty compartment as:

I Grooved wheels with a flange(type A) for use in the tensioningstations or as

I Grooved wheels without flange(type B) for use in the empty com-partment under the trough.

I Flat flange wheels (type C) forboth application cases, howeverthis is only possible with the useof flange attachments and veryshort distances between scraperbars.

I Our guide wheels are optimally

matched to the geometry of ourconveyor chains and attachments, thus guaranteeing trouble-freeoperation.

I We produce guide wheels forevery application, every chain sizeand every pitch circle diameter. We are always pleased to assistwith their design and the creationof an optimal solution.

The development of ash handlingplants was widened to includedry de-ashing systems in the1990s.The advantages of dryde-ashing are:

I No water requiredI No water treatment requiredI Low thermal energy lossesI Reduction of unburned fuel as a result

of the afterburning effectI Improved boiler efficiencyI Easier compliance with regulations

Ash quality is advantageous for itsfurther marketing

RUD has contributed to the develop-ment of "dry de-ashing" systems. It has developed an Apron Conveyorsystem which, in comparison to othersystems, remains sealed not only onthe straight but also on the curvedconveyor sections. This system was

developed on the basis of the triedand tested round steel chain and isdesigned specifically for it. In contrastto wet de-ashing, the ashes are notscraped along the floor of the troughbut carried along by the plates (A)attached to the conveyor chains untilthey are discharged. The plates run onwheels or, if required, on rails (B).The conveyor chain is protected bybaffle plates (C) projecting over theside walls of the plates. The conveyor chain is driven viaexternally toothed pocket wheels. These are more tolerant of longi-tudinal chain wear than internallytoothed wheels.

This principle offers the following advantages:

I Lower coefficients of friction in the upper conveying compartment, whmeans that, in some cases, a smaller chain size can be used for a givenconveyor capacity

I As the conveyor chain does not run through the material being conveyit is subjected to less wear than in a comparable wet de-asher.

I Relatively insusceptible to large lumps of ash, which can sometimes faoff the boiler wall when soot blisters form.

I Even easier to maintain than the already low-maintenance chainequipment of the SSC de-asher.

I Dry de-ashers with a RUD Apron Conveyor can be built with a significlower profile than other designs.

Conveying capacities of between5 and 70 tonnes per hour (t/h) areachieved, depending on the angleof the inclined part of the conveyor.Throughputs of 100 t/h have alreadybeen achieved. The conveyor is2000mm wide.

Conventional conveying speedslie between 0.01 and 0.07m/s.They seldom exceed 0.1m/s,and are achieved with regulatedelectromechanical or hydraulicdrives.

RUD components form the heart of

the Apron Conveyor: the conveyorchain, the chain connectors, the drivewheels, guide wheels and the dragchain together with its attachments.

The general advantages of theRUD components are:I Highly wear-resistant to give

long service lifeI High-strength through optimal heat

treatment (see operational forces, similar to those of wet deashing)

I Plates remain sealed, even in thecurves, thanks to a patentedattachment link

I The reinforced plates in the chainstrand are optimally adapted tothe conveying task, and supportedby at least four chain links

I Simple mounting in and dismoun-ting from the chains, and therefore

I Low-maintenance

RUD Apron Conveyors consist of the following components:1. Conveyor chains, sizes 19x75....30x1202. RS and FL chain connectors3. Three-part pocket wheels on the drive-side,

and one-piece pocket wheels on the deflectionside

4. Special attachments based on the MEE-T5. Robust plates optimally adapted

to the conveying task which,in conjunction with the MEE-Tattachments, form a

stable multi-linkconnection

RUD Chains' conveying systemsare optimally adapted for thevarious ways of conveying coalto the stockpile, and from thereto the boilers in conventionalpower plants.

27

All conveyors are designed with theRUD pocket wheel system. The drivehas multipart and the deflection one-piece pocket wheels. Alongside thestandard MEE-T attachment there isalso a special design with bolts forapron conveyors or as a one-pieceMEE-TK scraper with, if required,welded-on scraper edges.

The width of the conveyor can rangefrom 0.8 to 1.8 m. Conventionalspeeds lie between 0.1 and 0.3 m/s,or may be even faster whenconveying non-abrasivematerials.
