Change is Coming to 2014 Home Economics Day!!!Change is Coming to 2014 Home Economics Day!!!

Along with the traditional Arts & Crafts, Centerpiece & Placesetting, Fiber Arts & Quilts or Quilt Squares, Recipe

Review and Sewing Construction competitions, two new competitions will be offered at Home Economics Day this

year: Photography and Gardening. 4-H members enrolled in a Photography Project can look forward to entering

one photograph in a maximum of two classes in this competition. Classes are: (1) Color Photography (Scenery);

(2) Color Photograph (People or Animals); (3) Black and White Photography (Scenery); (4) Black and White Pho-

tography (People or Animals); and (5) 4-Hers in Uniforms. Photographs must have been taken on/after October 1,

2013 and must be shown in a suitable mat (photos may not be framed or covered with glass). Minimum photo-

graph size is 5 x 7”, maximum size is 8” x 10”.

4-H members enrolled in Vegetable Gardening and Crops projects may enter one exhibit in a maximum of two

classes in this competition. Classes include: (1) Herb Gardens; (2) Potted House Plant; (3) Potted Flowering Plant.

Members must have planted and cared for their exhibits since October 1, 2013.

This year’s Fashion Revue will feature the following State 4-H Field Day Qualifying Competitions: (1) Tradition-

al; (2) Purchased; (3) Upcycled; (4) Denim Challenge; and (5)Apron Challenge. Clothing and Textiles project

members may enter only one garment or outfit in Classes (1), (3) and (4). Any 4-H Project member may enter

Class (2) or (5).

TRADITIONAL garments will showcase the member’s sewing skills and their ability to coordinate an outfit.

PURCHASED garments showcase a member’s ability to purchase and coordinate an outfit with careful use of com-

parison shopping — the maximum purchase amount may not exceed $40 for everything showing including shoes,

jewelry, and accessories (sales tax is not included in the $40 and receipts for each of the items worn is required, and

purchases must have been made during the 2013-2014 4-H year). UPCYCLED garments are fashioned from an

existing garment into a completely new, different and usable garment (a before photograph of the original garment

is required). In the DENIM CHALLENGE, members must sew a wearable garment out of cotton denim (any type

or color). In the APRON CHALLENGE, members must create an apron from McCalls 6132 or 6476—members

may make the pattern larger or smaller but may not change the basic design. Accessories may not be worn during

the Fashion Revue unless they are worn in combination with a garment or outfit that has been made or purchased.

Congratulations to the new elected New Pioneer 4-H officers. Mavrick Farnam-

president, Chance Galvin- vice president, Brett Waterman- secretary, Allison Deaton

- reporter, Kayla Lake- treasurer, and Lane Galvin-sergeant of arms. New Pioneer

4-H had their first 4-H meeting October 2, 2013. We played a "Get To Know Your

Officers" trivia game. Each officer made up two trivia questions about themselves,

but one had to be 4-H related. A big thanks to Donna Roberts and Shawna Waterman

for being New Pioneer 4-H's leaders for so many years. Again congratulations to the

new officers of New Pioneer 4-H. Allison Deaton, New Pioneer 4-H Reporter

New Pioneer &

Davis Creek

4-H are off to a

GREAT

START!!!

New Pioneer 4-H had a meeting on November 6, 2013. We did an activity that was very fun. We traced our

hands on a drawing of a turkey to make it look like a turkey with feathers. We are going to give one to the

4-H office as a thank-you for all they do and one to the elders at Warnerveiw. Both appreciated the posters

very much.

On December 4, 2013 we had our Achievement Night. We had all of the new officers installed, gave all the

kids their awards, gave the leaders from the last year their awards, and had some yummy snacks. Thank you

Terry Brown for twenty years of service for New Pioneer 4-H and is retiring. We gave her a special 20 year

pin and the pig group gave her a poster they made. We are very sad but she will always be part of the club.

The whole club had a very good time and we hope that we can have that much fun for the rest of the year.

Our club has also been busy trying to do a lot of community service this time of year. We had a food drive.

The food collected was given to the TEACH food bank. We also collected items to send overseas to the mil-

itary for Christmas. During the Festival of Lights we made a float for the parade and sang Christmas Carols.

We will also be helping collect toys at the annual Guns & Hoses Christmas Charity Basketball Game.

Allison Deaton, New Pioneer 4-H Reporter

Davis Creek had our 4-H meeting on December 2, 2013. Congratulations to Grady Ingraham for

President and Paden Smith Vice President for the JLS board. We discussed with our JLS Representatives

about different things that the JLS show board wants 4-H groups to talk about for the next JLS next year. We

turned in our Mandarin orange money from selling boxes of oranges and we almost got $3,000 with every-

one’s money turned in all together. Our Horse Leader, Jess Dancer talked about having a horse meeting

about learning about horse teeth on December 9th, 2013. The club wanted to have another Christmas Carol-

ing Canned Food Drive this year on December 7th, 2013. We started to plan the Ground Hog Supper which

will be on Saturday, February 1st, 2014. The next 4-H meeting was scheduled for January 6th, 2014.

We were going to have a Christmas Canned Food Drive and afterwards have a lunch, but it got can-

celed because of bad weather up there. We had a 4-H horse meeting on December 9, 2013 at the Vet clinic at

5:00p.m.and we learned about the horses’ teeth. Haley Mae Dancer, Reporter, Davis Creek 4-H

Surprise Valley 4Surprise Valley 4--H is on the Move!!!H is on the Move!!! By Sydna Kennedy, Reporter

On November 4th during the Pee Wee Science Project led by Kay Antunez, the

4-H’ers built structures to see what building techniques were the strongest.

They used straws, styrofoam, masking tape, giant toothpicks and pins. Kay

taught the PeeWees about structures and how architects around the world use

different building techniques.

On November 11th, Surprise Valley 4-H helped out at our local Veterans’ Hall

dinner. Members served spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, drinks and desserts.

Some 4-H’ers also helped with clean up. One 4-H member made a tip jar and it

filled up with $30 for the Veterans! Pee Wee SciencePee Wee Science

Christmas Tree Lighting

Surprise Valley

The night also included fun things like hot chocolate, cookies, hot

dogs, hay rides, and some Christmas caroling. Everyone was freez-

ing, but also having fun. There were A LOT of people there. (I’m not

sure how many). All in all, The Tree Lighting was fun for everyone.

The lights are new low energy LED Christmas Lights and they re-

place the old lights, thanks to 4-H Science Leader, Kay Antunez. Last

year, in 4-H Science, we tested the old fashioned Christmas lights

and found out that they were using a lot of energy. Kay just got a

grant from the American Forest Foundation to buy the new LED

lights, as well as some “Kill A Watt” meters. The new LED lights use

80% less energy than the old ones!

The meters will be donated to the Cedarville library, so that residents

can check them out to see how much electricity they use in their

homes.

Thank you to all the 4-Hers who handed out empty bags for our food

drive, in such awful weather and a big thank you to those who are

generous enough to return those bags filled with food! We are also

appreciative of Lois Pearce, who originally came up with this event

and still helps to organize and distribute the food to those who need

it. It’s fun to be a part of this very nice Surprise Valley tradition.

The Surprise Valley Christmas Tree Lighting on Decem-

ber 6th was a big success! Everyone had fun, and when

the lights flipped on, Bam!, half of the tree was lighted.

Then the other half.

SAVE THE DATE! On Saturday May 17, 2014, the first-ever Natural Resources 4-H Day Camp will be held. Participants will

conduct range studies, participate in geo-caching, and be introduced to natural resource career opportunities.

Pre-registration will be required. Watch for more information in future editions of Mule Tales!
