Purpose
• Share instructional ideas for Elementary teachers that – Include English Language Learners– Increase comprehension in content areas of
math, science and social studies– Enhance literacy skills

Language Instruction
Introduce Vocabulary:• map title• compass rose (N,S,E,W)• legend (key)• scale• ocean• continent
Social Studies – Map SkillsEnhance Comprehension
Teaching Strategies:• visuals – maps, globes, photographs• manipulatives – toy cars, planes,
boats, puzzles, label parts of map• vocabulary cards – memory, bingo• scavenger hunt (direction words)

Affective Considerations Increase motivation, self esteem, & lower
anxiety• actively involve each student• activate background knowledge• help students make connections between self
and others in the world• Students locate own countries on map and
describe its location in relation to other areas on a map

Four Modalities
Listening – vocabulary, following directions, TPR
Speaking – Repeating vocabulary, interaction with students and teacher, songs and chants
Reading – vocabulary words, labels/ places on maps
Writing – create bingo boards with vocabulary, create labels for individual maps, writing activities designed for individual proficiency levels
