MODERN VIEWSA Project to Benefit Farnsworth House and the Glass House

Page 6: Modern Views Catalogue/Sotheby's Benefit

“The building as muse: that is the idea behind Modern Views, in which 100 distinguished architects,

artists, designers and landscape architects have created works that are in some way inspired by either

the Farnsworth House, Mies van der Rohe’s extraordinary masterpiece in Plano, Illinois, or the Glass

House, the centerpiece of Philip Johnson’s estate in New Canaan, Connecticut, or both. That these

two sublime buildings can both excite and challenge designers is no surprise; they have been doing so

for more than half a century, and Modern Views, in a sense, is just an attempt to give concrete form to

the great influence that these two works of architecture have had on the design sensibility of our time.”

— excerpted from Paul Goldberger’s introduction to Modern Views Inspired by the Mies van der Rohe Farnsworth

House and the Philip Johnson Glass House, published by Assouline, Fall 2010.

MODERN VIEWS: A Project to Benefit Farnsworth House and the Glass House invitedsome of our era’s top creative minds to continue one of the twentieth century’s great cultural dialogues: the historic exchange reflected in the Ludwig Mies van der RoheFarnsworth House (1945–51) and the Philip Johnson Glass House (1949).

Spearheaded by the Glass House leadership, as the National Trust’s Center for Modernism, the project represents a yearlong initiative to raise funds for critical site preservation effortsat both homes. The venture is set to raise $1M to preserve our country’s most inspirationalModernist icons.

“The National Trust for Historic Preservation is extremely proud to be the owner of thesetwo icons of Modernism,” said David Brown, Executive Vice President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “Modern Views ensures that both the Glass House andFarnsworth House will continue to inspire other artists and spur an ongoing dialogue aboutthe role both houses occupy in the broader Modernist movement. While raising neededfunding for the preservation of the Glass House and Farnsworth House, Modern Views en-sures that both of these masterpieces remain catalysts for creativity, debate and inspiration.”

Generously underwritten by Sotheby’s, Modern Views is also grateful to the Center forModernism Board of Advisors: Johan Eveland, Paul Goldberger, Ted Hathaway, RobertRubin, Bill Ruprecht, and Robert A.M. Stern; and the Modern Views Project Leadership:John Bryan, Amalia Dayan + Adam Lindemann, Paul Goldberger, Richard Gray, PhyllisLambert, Tobias Meyer + Mark Fletcher, Cindy Pritzker, and Christy MacLear, ExecutiveDirector, Philip Johnson Glass House, Whitney French, Executive Director, FarnsworthHouse, and Susan Sayre Batton, Modern Views Project Director.

Special thanks also goes to our corporate sponsor A. E. Greyson.
